If you are a Wordpress user, then I am sure you must be familiar with Akismet, which prevents Comment Spam on millions of Blogs world over. Defensio is trying to make combating evil comment spam even better than what Akismet does already.

• Your comment traffic is routed through Defensio’s spam filtering service.
• Every comment is analyzed by their system and attributed a “spaminess” score.
• Defensio makes the call : Is the comment spam or is it legitimate?
• If it’s legitimate, the comment is immediately posted to your site.
• If it’s spam, the comment is quarantined for your review.

The basic principle of working remains the same, but the only real difference from Akismet is the assignment of a score to a comment. Defensio is not restricted to Blogs only. Its API is pretty vast and can be used on any system with user generated content like Forums, Wiki’s etc.. Defensio also provides RSS feeds for your comments (sorted by spamminess, of course) so you can track them outside of your publishing platform.

Yes beware of the themes that you download for Wordpress and Joomla from 3rd Party sites. A Site called TemplatesBrowser is giving a lot popular wordpress and joomla themes which are actually available for free elsewhere to download on its site.

And with it comes something crazy, they are inserting spammy links in your theme that you cannot see but the search engines can, which is enough to reduce your Search engine ranks. Beware and download the themes from the sites of the original authors itself.

And remember no one but the search engines can see these links when they visit the site. And Also for Joomla themes TemplatesBrowser has been adding a special PHP code that tracks what you and visitors are doing by adding a phishing code.
