I’ve been using Notify for quite some time, and its a handy app to have running all the time on your Mac. Its simple, unobtrusive and has the true Mac experience.

Version 1.x released a few months back just does the basic Email notifications thing, but the upcoming 2.0 version will see Notify do a lot more. Features like viewing messages from multiple accounts (not restricted to GMail and Google Maps only), inline replies of emails, support for deleting mails and marking them as read etc.

Setting up Notify

Getting Notify up and running is quick and easy. Visit Vibealicious’s website and download the latest version. Once download simply drag the application bundle into your Applications folder and open it. Notify will now appear in your menu bar.

mainWindow

When you first open the application, you are greeting with what’s shown in the screenshot above.. Click Sure! to go ahead and add your first GMail account into Notify.

accountTab

Notify in its current incarnation is nothing more than a EMail Notifier… It might look like a waste on your desktop, but the upcoming Notifier 2 will make it a compelling choice for anyone who wishes to manage their email like an expert.

Notify 2.0

Currently under beta testing, Notify 2.0 brings a lot more of new features to the table.. Here’s a preview of some of them.

sendMessage The biggest new feature is full in-app message and reply creation. Something that I sorely missed in the first incarnation of Notify.

messagePreview In Notify 1.x we had to click through to see and read any email bigger than 200 characters. With 2.0 it is now fixed with a Quicklook type UI. You can easily view full HTML messages.

Final Words

At the moment Notify is a solid application that seamlessly fits into the Mac Experience. Notify 2.0 will bring a lot more to this already beautiful app and help us manage email better rather than depending on complex applications like Mail.app etc.

Remember the Milk Now Integrated (Fully) into GMail http://dailyapps.net/2007/12/remember-the-milk-now-integrated-fully-into-gmail/ http://dailyapps.net/2007/12/remember-the-milk-now-integrated-fully-into-gmail/#comments Thu, 20 Dec 2007 02:22:43 +0000 Karthik Kastury http://dailyapps.net/2007/12/remember-the-milk-now-integrated-fully-into-gmail/ Read The Rest →]]>  logo

Remember the Milk, one of the best Online Task management services is now fully integrated into GMail. The Integration of RTM into GMail is so good that you’ll never again need to visit RTM again. Email integration of this kind is always welcome, because I can do everything from Emails, to planning my tasks, and just about everything from a single interface. On a side note Remember the Milk integrates pretty well into other Google Services like Google Calendar, and Offline support via Google Gears. For other forms of integration that RTM offers, have a look at their services page.

Coming back to the GMail integration here’s what the guys over at RTM had to say about the GMail Integration :

Remember The Milk for Gmail is a Firefox extension that allows you to manage your tasks in Gmail (complete, postpone, and edit tasks), add new tasks (and connect them with your emails, contacts, and Google Calendar events), automatically add tasks for starred messages or specific labels, and much more!

Here are some screenshots of RTM fully integrated with GMail, I have to say it does really look uber cool!!

For more features check out the video of the RTM’s integration with GMail over here. Now that RTM is available on your GMail, and so are your AIM buddies, it sure does reduce the need for you to go on to other services, when everything is available through a single unified interface of GMail. Isn’t it?

GMail Adds Colored Labels, and AIM Support http://dailyapps.net/2007/12/gmail-adds-colored-labels-and-aim-support/ http://dailyapps.net/2007/12/gmail-adds-colored-labels-and-aim-support/#comments Wed, 05 Dec 2007 01:40:33 +0000 Karthik Kastury http://dailyapps.net/2007/12/gmail-adds-colored-labels-and-aim-support/ Read The Rest →]]> The GMail crew seems to be working hard these days, ever since the launch of GMail 2.0. GMail has finally given us one of the most important features we’ve been waiting for quite long and that is Colored Labels. Well Labels was a great feature GMail already had, to help us organize our inbox, but these Colored Labels, help us easily spot out the message we’re looking for. A Screenshot below, shows the colored labels feature in action.

coloredlabelsinbox

You can now set a different color for each label so you can identify messages easier. Not all Gmail accounts have the new feature, but it will probably be enabled for everyone soon (Mine is yet to come!).

Another addition to GMail today was AIM Integration into the built in chat Module in GMail. You can now chat with all your AIM buddies right from your GMail account. To check to see if you have a lucky account (I’m sure they’ll be rolling this out to all users soon) logout, then log back into your account and click on Settings, from there visit the Chat tab and look at the bottom of the list for the section named AIM. Sign in, and your ready to go. You should see something like this :

The addition of these two features, surely makes GMail all the more fun to use and productive. I love the way GMail innovates! What you do you think about the new features? Are you going to use them?

The latest one is the addition of Group Chat and Smileys into the Chat client that it is inbuilt into GMail. I have to say this is a cool new feature coming from the GMail team, because I can read through all my emails while having a group conversation will all my classmates for the next class outing!

gmail-chat-2Start a group chat by clicking on the Options link at the bottom of a conversation window. You’ll now see “Group Chat” as a new option. Once that’s selected, just type in the name of the person you’d like to add to your current conversation. If you don’t see the group chat option yet, try signing out and logging back into your Gmail account.

The added bonus of this new feature, is the addition of Smileys into the GMail Chat. Until now, this feature was not directly accessible, but now they are available at the click of a button.

Its really nice to see GMail continuing to innovate in this highly competitive market.

Firefox Security Threat – Google is vulnerable http://dailyapps.net/2007/11/firefox-security-threat-google-is-vulnerable/ http://dailyapps.net/2007/11/firefox-security-threat-google-is-vulnerable/#comments Mon, 12 Nov 2007 14:21:36 +0000 Karthik Kastury http://dailyapps.net/2007/11/firefox-security-threat-google-is-vulnerable/ Read The Rest →]]> Firefox

A Malicious exploit has been discovered in Firefox that would allow a Hacker to use a Malicious JAR file to get access to your Google Account and all your confidential information.

Firefox is falling into some serious trouble over the past few months, with more and more security exploits being discovered and being exploited. The latest threat involves the usage of a malicious JAR file. The flaw is still in the wild and the problem persists with the websites of Major Internet companies that includes Google. Beford.org has found a way to use the JAR exploit to get details of Google Accounts using a Malicious JAR file specially crafted to take advantage of the exploit.

Well I’m going to refrain myself from writing about the Exploit. I have tested this exploit on my own spare Google Account, and I can confirm that this works. Its better be to safe because I’m not sure when exactly is Google and Mozilla planning to patch up the security holes. I suggest you download the NoScript addon for Firefox. Right now NoScript seems to be the only solution. If you are wondering what NoScript is, then here is what its developer has to say about it :

It allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from trusted domains of your choice, e.g. your home-banking web site, and guards the “trust boundaries” against cross-site scripting attacks (XSS). Such a preemptive approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even unknown!) with no loss of functionality…

The other way to stay safe would be to visit sites that you trust and not download anything that looks suspicious. Given the vastness of the Internet, however careful you are, this can be still a threat. Keep yourself signed out of all Accounts until this is patched. But do remember to stay safe.

This exploit was known to Mozilla for quite sometime and hasn’t still patched it. Given that this vulnerability affects both Google and Firefox lets see who gets this patched first.

Google to Connect to Different IM Networks Very Soon http://dailyapps.net/2007/11/google-to-connect-to-different-im-networks-very-soon/ http://dailyapps.net/2007/11/google-to-connect-to-different-im-networks-very-soon/#comments Thu, 01 Nov 2007 03:52:03 +0000 Karthik Kastury http://dailyapps.net/2007/11/google-to-connect-to-different-im-networks-very-soon/ Read The Rest →]]> Google seems to be giving GMail quite a push these days isn’t it? First we had the additional storage, then the rollout of IMAP, then a new interface, and now possibly the ability to chat with friends on multiple IM networks using the Jabber Transports feature.

Ionut Alex Chitu over at Google System, while looking through the GMail code found stuff that was related to features not released as yet, which includes,

  • Colors for Labels
  • Detaching Messages from a Conversation
  • And the ability to connect to multiple IM Networks like Yahoo, MSN, AIM etc…

I have been using Pidgin as my primary IM Client for almost an year now, simply because I couldn’t use GTalk to connect to my friends on Yahoo, MSN etc.. but if Google decides to implement Jabber Transports into GTalk, I would straightaway start using GTalk. If you are wondering what Jabber Transports is all about, then here is what Wikipedia has to say :

One of the things people like about Jabber is that you can communicate with users of legacy IM services like AIM, MSN, ICQ, and Yahoo. Unlike all-in-one IM clients like Trillian, what makes this possible in Jabber is a piece of software called a gateway (or "transport"), which runs in conjunction with a Jabber server such as jabber.org.

Another hint at the arrival of Jabber Transports in GTalk is ofcourse the new contacts manager that allows you to add details for multiple IM networks in your contacts. (See Screenshot)

GMail Contacts Manager

I have got the new version of GMail and I am still testing it. So far its been good, baring a few bugs here and there, for which I am trying to find a solution. I really hope that Jabber Transports is implemented, because that will give GMail users a lot of advantage compared to Yahoo, MSN and others.

What else do you want to see in GMail 2.0??

Yay! GMail finally gets IMAP http://dailyapps.net/2007/10/yay-gmail-finally-gets-imap/ http://dailyapps.net/2007/10/yay-gmail-finally-gets-imap/#comments Wed, 24 Oct 2007 06:30:53 +0000 Karthik Kastury http://dailyapps.net/2007/10/yay-gmail-finally-gets-imap/ Read The Rest →]]> Thanks to DownloadSquad I discovered that my Gmail account finally has IMAP Access in it. IMAP allows you to read and send mail just like POP does but albeit in a much better way. IMAP will allow you to read mails from a variety programs and the most important thing is that all the mails that you read say in your iPhone, the same mails will be marked as read when you check your inbox in Thunderbird.

gmail-imap

GMail currently supports the following Mail Clients :

and the following Wireless Devices :

Activating IMAP is very simple. At present not all the Gmail Accounts have IMAP so keep checking your account settings for the next day or two and you should see it there. To configure your IMAP settings you need to navigate to POP/IMAP Settings under the Account settings menu. Reading the comments on Download Squad, a lot of people are getting IMAP onto their GMail accounts if they logout and then login again. Try doing this if IMAP is not present in your account.

Well My Gmail account has IMAP and I am installing Thunderbird as I write this now, So have you got IMAP in your Gmail, let us know through the comments.

GMail gets a Storage Boost! http://dailyapps.net/2007/10/gmail-gets-a-storage-boost/ http://dailyapps.net/2007/10/gmail-gets-a-storage-boost/#comments Sat, 13 Oct 2007 01:36:43 +0000 Karthik Kastury http://dailyapps.net/2007/10/gmail-gets-a-storage-boost/ Read The Rest →]]> GMailGoogle has just announced that GMail will be getting additional storage from now on. Dubbed as "infinity+1" GMail will continuously increase from now on. By the end of this month we should see about 4GB of storage in GMail and 6GB by January.

Well here are the rough estimates of how much storage you will have :

gmail-storage-estimate

Well that roughly translates into :

  • 2912MB by October 11, 2007 midnight Google time
  • 4.2GB by the 23rd this month

  • 6GB by January 4th next year
  • 42GB by the year of 2038
  • and 2.70266701 × 1072 TB* by 1/2/3456 7:00

Well the additional storage is really appreciated, but GMail’s chief competitor Yahoo Mail already offers unlimited storage so it would be nice if Google did the same with GMail too. Well the last two estimates remain a little bit too exaggerated. Also 42GB by 2038, Google are you kidding me?? 42GB after 30years, wouldn’t it be too less ?

Google has also updated storage for Google Apps users giving them that extra bit of storage. Google Apps who are on the standard plan will now get inbox’s that would match GMail’s growth rate. If the free storage is not enough for you, then you should check out the paid storage option :

  • 10GB for $20 per year
  • 40GB for $75 per year
  • 150GB for $250 per year
  • 400GB for $500 per year

I really like, when Google does things in its own style. While the announcement from Yahoo about unlimited storage drew a lot of criticism for Gmail for being stuck in the past, but I strongly belive that Google does continue to innovate with Gmail.

Drop in your comments as to what you think about the storage bump in GMail?

Use Gmail As a File Storage Server http://dailyapps.net/2007/08/use-gmail-as-a-file-storage-server/ http://dailyapps.net/2007/08/use-gmail-as-a-file-storage-server/#comments Thu, 30 Aug 2007 23:30:02 +0000 Karthik Kastury http://dailyapps.net/2007/08/use-gmail-as-a-file-storage-server/ Read The Rest →]]> There are a lot of hacks that allow us to save our files on GMail. They range from Shell extension to all kinds of softwares that do this. But the easiest option that I have seen so far is the super cool firefox addon GSpace.

Gspace turns the 2.8GB+ of your Gmail account into free online storage. With Gspace you can manage unlimited Gmail accounts to store all type of files within its simple, user friendly interface.

Listen your favourite stored music directly from your Gspace, view your collections of pictures and manage your Gdrive files as well.

Using GSpace is as simple as saying 1-2-3..

  • Once you have installed Gspace, open your Firefox browser. To access Gspace go to: Tools > Gspace. The Gspace console will appear on screen.
  • Manage your Gmail accounts. You can set up as many as you want. Remember that each one provides 2.8Gb of storage.
  • Login to any of your Gmail accounts.
  • Gspace console is divided in 4 key areas for you to manage your files: My Computer / My Gspace / Transfers / Status.
  • Enjoy Gspace features:
    • File Transfer: to manage files
    • Player Mode: to listen your stored music files directly from Gspace
    • Photo Mode: to view your collection of pictures
    • Gmail Drive: to manage your Gdrive files as well

On a small note of Warning Do not upload/download many files in a single day. You may get your account blocked for 24 houres. It seems that, this happens if more than 1GB of data is transferred in a single day.

So go ahead and install the GSpace addon and bask in its glory.

Yep Google is finally giving a paid upgrade to extra storage on Picasa Web Albums and Gmail. With a Google shared storage plan, you won’t have to worry about deleting files, pictures, or emails. After purchasing a storage plan, some of your individual Google services (e.g. email and photos) will share a single new storage space. This is a good news for all those people who have almost filled up their inbox. If you are one of those go ahead and buy yourself extra storage.. here are the plans

Google Shared Storage Pricing
6 GB $20 per year
25 GB $75.00 per year
100 GB $250 per year
250 GB $500 per year

Here is the official googleannouncement. Considering that there are other services that gives you unlimited storage, i would have expected the plans to be a little cheaper. Also the option to buy a Picasa Premium account is being removed and it will be clubbed with the Shared Storage Plan. So if you read less email and have more photos or even the other way round, Shared Storage is a must for you..
