Thanks to DownloadSquad I discovered that my Gmail account finally has IMAP Access in it. IMAP allows you to read and send mail just like POP does but albeit in a much better way. IMAP will allow you to read mails from a variety programs and the most important thing is that all the mails that you read say in your iPhone, the same mails will be marked as read when you check your inbox in Thunderbird.

GMail currently supports the following Mail Clients :

Outlook Express (Windows)

Outlook 2003 (Windows)

Outlook 2007 (Windows)

Apple Mail

Windows Mail

Thunderbird 2.0

Other*

and the following Wireless Devices :

iPhone

Activating IMAP is very simple. At present not all the Gmail Accounts have IMAP so keep checking your account settings for the next day or two and you should see it there. To configure your IMAP settings you need to navigate to POP/IMAP Settings under the Account settings menu. Reading the comments on Download Squad, a lot of people are getting IMAP onto their GMail accounts if they logout and then login again. Try doing this if IMAP is not present in your account.

Well My Gmail account has IMAP and I am installing Thunderbird as I write this now, So have you got IMAP in your Gmail, let us know through the comments.

Google has just announced that GMail will be getting additional storage from now on. Dubbed as "infinity+1" GMail will continuously increase from now on. By the end of this month we should see about 4GB of storage in GMail and 6GB by January.

Well here are the rough estimates of how much storage you will have :

Well that roughly translates into :

2912MB by October 11, 2007 midnight Google time

4.2GB by the 23rd this month

6GB by January 4th next year

42GB by the year of 2038

and 2.70266701 × 1072 TB* by 1/2/3456 7:00

Well the additional storage is really appreciated, but GMail’s chief competitor Yahoo Mail already offers unlimited storage so it would be nice if Google did the same with GMail too. Well the last two estimates remain a little bit too exaggerated. Also 42GB by 2038, Google are you kidding me?? 42GB after 30years, wouldn’t it be too less ?

Google has also updated storage for Google Apps users giving them that extra bit of storage. Google Apps who are on the standard plan will now get inbox’s that would match GMail’s growth rate. If the free storage is not enough for you, then you should check out the paid storage option :

10GB for $20 per year

40GB for $75 per year

150GB for $250 per year

400GB for $500 per year

I really like, when Google does things in its own style. While the announcement from Yahoo about unlimited storage drew a lot of criticism for Gmail for being stuck in the past, but I strongly belive that Google does continue to innovate with Gmail.

Drop in your comments as to what you think about the storage bump in GMail?

After the recent partnership of Google with CapGemini to help in promoting Google Apps for Organizations some major companies like Microsoft and Zimbra have been criticizing Google Apps for its shortfalls.

While I agree that Google Apps has its own shortcomings, but I see no reason Google Apps can’t have a mass adoption by the enterprise sector. Here are some reasons why Google Apps is the right choice for most Enterprise Users.

1. Eliminate email hassles instantly. No more outages, lost mail, spamming, phishing, viruses, security breaches.

2. Reduce costs. Eliminate the hardware, software, maintenance, upgrades, and services associated with your current environment.

3. Enable collaboration for everyone, from anywhere. Access and collaborate on all your documents and spreadsheets from anywhere in the world via a web browser.

4. Get everyone on the same page. Bring all your key information together in one central, easy-to-use, searchable location.

5. Reduce IT overload. Google handles all technical aspects, freeing up your team to focus on other projects, and allowing you to reduce your online communication and collaboration costs to one low monthly fee.

6. Instantly increase the productivity, knowledge, teamwork, and communication capabilities. Provide instantly accessible tools, including Web-based business class email, online document management, online calendars, blogs, wikis, etc. to your business and your team.

7. Make partnering and out-sourcing more efficient. Create a platform that can seamlessly support virtual ad-hoc teams (without the intervention of an “administrator”), thereby quickly reducing your costs.

8. Increase your peace of mind. With Google’s hosted, fast, safe, and secure file storage, you never have to worry about losing critical business information. You also never have to worry about scalability – Google apps will support any number of users who can be added at any time.

9. Get automatic versioning. Any change to any information in a Google document or spreadsheet creates a new version of the information. Even if a document or spreadsheet is being authored by many users simultaneously, none of the information will ever get lost. If any change is unacceptable, the contents of it can be quickly rolled back to any of its previous states with a couple of clicks.

10. Take advantage of continuous improvement. All Google Apps updates are immediately distributed to all customers. This means that you always have the latest and greatest features immediately available for use in your organization – without doing a thing.

11. New hires are already using this technology. People entering the workforce today have lived and breathed the web since they were in high school. If you don’t provide company endorsed solutions, they will end up using tools that are available on the open Internet until you do.

So afterall every Office Suite, be it Office or Zimbra or even Google Apps, they have there own pros and cons. But in the end I feel that Google Apps is the best option for startups to store and manage information.

Yahoo Mail has finally moved out of beta and the users should see the new Yahoo Mail in the next 3-6 Weeks. Looks like Yahoo has done some hard work and come up with some interesting features like Text Messaging right from the Yahoo Mail interface in select countries.

There are a host of other changes that include performance improvements, and keyboard shortcuts to add contacts, addresses, integrated maps, calendar and of course Yahoo Search is there too. I am not a big fan of Yahoo Mail since it seems to be a little bit bloated unlike GMail which has been kept to the bare minimum intrusion.

If you get a chance to test out the new Yahoo Mail then please let me in the comments on how it works for you.

For those wondering what litepost is all about here is a brief recollection of what i posted in my previous review at dailyApps.

Inbox on Detox

Litepost is the most intuitive webmail solution you’ll ever use. Clutter is the norm in web interfaces these days; Litepost does much better. The innovative features will help you communicate better rather than getting in your way.

Message Ratings

A built-in rating system allows you to organize messages in your inbox based on the quality of their content, so you can easily find only the important emails.

Tagging

Web 2.0 is all about tagging these days. Litepost has it built in. Not only that, tagging is a fundamental part of our webmail technology, replacing the old concept of mail folders. Rather than looking for an email in folders with vague names, simply filter through your inbox with descriptive tags.

It’s the Interface

Litepost supports interface templates, allowing you to choose one that best suits your webmail needs. More sophisticated than simple “skins”, interface templates let you not only change look of your email experience, but allow you to alter functionality, adding or subtracting features you may or may not need.

Email storage seems to be the buzzword these days. First it was Yahoo giving unlimited Storage for its mail accounts and then it was google giving paid upgrades to extra storage on GMail, and this time around its Windows Live Hotmail Users who have been given a storage bump.

Microsoft made a series of announcements yesterday regarding updates to the Windows Live Hotmail service.Standard users now get 5GB of storage, while paid MSN Premium and Hotmail Plus accounts now get 10GB of storage. Now with all this i feel that my favourite GMail has been let down, because it still offers just about 3GB of storage. Come on guys over at google pull up your socks and give us that extra storage…

Responding to complaints from users and gripes in the blogosphere, Microsoft is also bringing back the option to choose to see one’s inbox, rather than a Today page of MSN News, upon login. Here are some of the upgrades to the Live Hotmail Service

Performance : Improved Performance of Hotmail with improvements in speed and design issues.

Mail retention changes : Option to keep your mail in Junk and Deleted Items for a longer time.

Forwarding messages : This is funny. Free users can ow forward mail to other hotmail users while paid users can forward to any email account.

A Smaller Header : Yes you have more space to read your email.

Contacts Duplication : If you are one of those who have lot of duplicate contacts Live Hotmail makes it easier to remove duplicates.

and lots more : read the official announcement here

All in all these are significant upgrades to the Hotmail service, but I expect a lot more from one of the pioneers of email to offer much better and streamlined services.

email has grown leaps and bounds since the time it started. From a meager 2mb storage to a whopping 2gb storage, from cluttered interfaces to clutter free interfaces. But email still remains popular in the hands of gmail and yahoo.

There has not been much contribution from the open source apps particularly, Horde or SquirrelMail. These apps have been at a standstill, both in terms of features and appearance, for nearly three years. But that is all set to change with the arrival of Litepost.

Litepost is the future of webmail if I can say. Litepost is continuously developing. Being open source it has a great community support. Right now they are in beta so it will be quite a little time before a release usable by the general public comes out.

Here are some of the features of Litepost

Litepost is definitely the future of webmail. Litepost looks very promising and dailyApps will keep a watch on it. To download Litepost for your webserver click here. The webmail functionality is expected to launch very soon. It is now in a private beta.

P.S. Thanks Matt

This weekend many Hotmail users have been reporting problems in accessing their accounts. They are getting errors like Server is Temporarily Unavailable etc.. while they try to log into their accounts.Microsoft acknowledged the problems immediately. Confirmation of the email service’s downtime served to inform frustrated users of what was happening, but they still had to wait a few hours before Windows Live Hotmail was up and running again. Microsoft announced that only a limited group of users were impacted, having been locked out of their accounts.

“Just wanted to let everyone know we’re aware of the difficulties accessing Hotmail/Live Hotmail right now – you may get “Server is Temporarily Unavailable” when logging in. We’re working hard right now to restore service to all users, and we apologize for the inconvenience,” reads a message from Microsoft Email Support Space on July 27.

While Hotmail is back into action now and is working fine, but still there is official reason from Microsoft as to what exactly happened. But Microsoft has denied any loss of data.
