With the iPhone 3G all set to go on sale tomorrow morning, there are still some unanswered questions about the iPhone 3G.. Apple seems to have coordinated review spree from Walt Mossberg, Edward Baig, and David Pogue, all out with major hands-on reviews.
All the three of them feel that the iPhone 3G is a good hardware device and a good upgrade over the original iPhone that we saw an year earlier. But just like the original compromises with the iPhone still exist and that make it hardly a must-have device.
But that brings us to the important question.. Will you buy the iPhone 3G when it goes for sale this friday? If you are not planning to buy one what is it that is holding you back from buying one? Is it the cost, or is it the carrier choice or is it the design cues since you are going to have to acquaint yourself to a completely new experience of mobile phones..
Or are you going to rush to the nearest Apple Store first thing tomorrow morning and get the iPhone 3G? Or are you going to stay with your first gen iPhone? We’d love to hear what your plans are’
I for one will surely be lining up to buy the iPhone when it makes an appearance in India. Here’s a chance for all you guys to be a little bit of nostradamus..

It may cost 28k in India,it will be costly compared to 199$ and it will take some more months for Iphone 3G to be released in India… I am not gonna spend 28k for a Iphone 3G which is available at 8k in US…
ok.Thanks a lot for the informative and interesting publication first of all. Actually I was looking for this information for a long time and finally have noticed this your entry.
I am not going to buy the new iPhone 3G for the HIghSpeed 3G network or the GPS, I will be happy with iPhone OS 2.0 on my iPhone Original, but someday i will buy the iPhone 3G to add new member to my “most loved gadget family”
Not if I could.
In Canada I work in an independant computer store that also is a reseller for a non rogers cellular service provider.
Out of curiousity I decided to see how bad the Rogers contracts were… I tried to duplicate a medium service package for the iPhone 3G in the states with no roaming charges or overcharges. The only way to do this was with the high end Rogers contract and 2 extended service packages in a three year contract plus the iPhone is well over $5400 Canadian.
I then priced out a smart phone, either a Blackberry Curve, Pearl, or Palm Treo, plus 3 years of a medium premium service contract with data, and a top end iPod Touch, it would leave about $1500 CAD to $2000 which is enough to get a fairly good brand new PC or Laptop and a year of DSL internet, and had enough to pay for alot of video and music off of iTunes.
People have also pointed out someone entering university who got a new iPhone with contract would instead put the money in the bank could retire a millionare.
I really would have bought it IF i didn’t buy a phone 3 months before that. I must say, the rates here in the Netherlands are GREAT. We are probably the only country who is not screwed with the prices
30 euro a month, including unlimited data use and visual voice mail. 150 min and 150 text messages. G R E A T.
I would not buy it, even if I could.
I think there’s better options in the market.
No, I’ll wait for an Android phone!!
I would love to buy the iPhone 3G, but here in Australia, it will cost $800 to get it pre-paid and I will not go on contract, which is paying $45 a month.
No, I will keep my old iphone, still very happy with it ….
In Aus its ridiculously quite high compared to the $199 stated. To buy it outright it costs 600+ depending on which model
On plans its quite costly, will wait and see how things turn out.

Nope – I’m on ATT, eligible for upgrade, but I’m a long-time Windows Mobile user. I have a ton of software for my WM devices that just works for what I need. I also like having real keys, not touch-screen only as an option. Add in the option for a stylus or using my fingers, and I’m pretty content. iPhone – no stylus so you get whatever your fingers can manipulate. Add in a more expensive data plan with no tethering and it’s just not worth it to me.
Now where the iPhone really wins is in storage and actual web browsing. WM devices are still pretty bad for that. However, I can get a true VGA WM device and MS is finally going to release a version of IE that works better than PocketIE. Opera is about to release 9.5. There are some good options out there just around the corner.
I think Apple did a great job with the device overall and shook up the market quite a bit – something long needed. I just don’t see the need to shell out $199 as well as paying more for my phone service.
Not enough juice in this device to pull me in to the store for an “upgrade”. The 3G service is not always going to achive 3G speeds on your device everywhere you go. A real keyboard might have differentiated itself enought to compel me however its a matter of time until I bust my phone and will then be “forced” the buy the new one. I am on my third 1g iphone right now.
@All, Yeah the carrier greed seems to have taken over the primary objective of getting iPhone in as many hands as possible..
And about the pricing of the iPhone in India I expect it to retail anywhere between 20-25k.. N95 came out at that range so Vodafone and Airtel obviously can’t take it more than that..
I wonder when we’ll see the iPhone here in India
I just bought an iPhone (1st generation) from eBay. Why pay lots of money for GPS an 3G? I’ll wait a while longer before buying the 3G. Maybe when some decent turn-by-turn navigation software is released.
Without a contract it’s 550 in Belgium. There is no ‘with’ contract option… So I don’t think I’ll get it via official channels . I’ll try to import one from the US

I had the I phone 3gs and I was very satisfied. Looking at some of the older models I definitely felt that there was a difference between my phone and some of the older models, obviously.
What a great job! I am so glad I read your article when I did! thanks and keep up the good work.
