With its just a week to go for MacWorld ’08, Master Steve decided that he needs to push out all the boring announcements beforehand and give us something exciting on January 15th. Having said that, Apple yesterday upgraded its MacPro lineup making the latest MacPro’s the fastest ever.

Apple bumped the MacPro’s to an 8 Core beast of machine, and host of other upgrades making it twice as fast as its predecessors. Here is the base configuration of the MacPro that retails for $2,799.

  • Two 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors with dual-independent 1600 MHz front side buses;
  • 2GB of 800 MHz DDR2 ECC fully-buffered DIMM memory, expandable up to 32GB;
  • ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of GDDR3 memory;
  • 320GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive running at 7200 rpm;
  • 16x SuperDrive’ with double-layer support (DVDR DL/DVDRW/CD-RW);
  • Two PCI Express 2.0 slots and two PCI Express slots;
  • Bluetooth 2.0+EDR; and
  • Ships with Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse.

On an another note, Apple has also updated its XSERVE’s lineup. By pushing these announcements out of the way before the MacWorld, Apple surely has a lot of things lined up its sleeves. Come on January 15th, Come fast!!

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
