Nice analysis, nice read!
Well, I believe Apple is ahead and everybody else will never catch up because of lack of apps, or no ecosystem or learning curve.
Just see how many app developers like iFunia live on it.

To say there are no crashes is actually a stretch. I have an iPhone and friends of mine had the iPad. Guess what? They both have apps that crash. As for viruses, give it time. When people have a reason to create a virus, they will. Do you really think this platform is impervious to viruses and that it is not possible to create one? I have said it a thousand times, hackers only want to do this stuff when there is reason to. Apple never had enough market domination to warrant the time investment. Trust me though, when there is reason they will do it. People should really get their heads out of their ass and think logically.

The iPad could have been a good "mom machine", but in the end, it fails: there are too many inconsistencies and too many things just don't work. Every app has a different way of invoking menus, settings, search, and go-back. Undo doesn't even exist in many apps. Services like Facebook need to be configured separately and differently in every app. The web browser sometimes displays mobile sites and sometimes full sites, fails to render the Flash games my mother likes to play, and even when the stars align correctly still fails mysteriously with distressing frequency (like... I couldn't post to this thread from the iPad). Not even cut-and-paste works consistently. Moms have no tolerance for that kind of b.s.

Like OS X, the iPad promises ease of use but falls way short; in the end, it's just another geek machine, albeit for a different kind of geek. What the iPad is good for is replacing a Kindle. For an easy to use "mom machine", we still have to wait; Chrome OS on a netbook looked pretty promising.

what about all those poor users that ; like me that actually like windows type complicated devices, the people that metaphorically like their cars in manual rather than automatic?
that enjoy customization compared to that standardized toy?
what i'm scared of is the tech products dieing and the world becoming an automatic peace of crap who's speed is regulated.

If its not perfect, there is always room for improvement in coming versions. But as its earlier innovations, Apple can make iPad quite a success.

Nice read :)
i would be happy if iPad will take over the Publishing industry cos that would save a lot of trees.
Personally i felt it should have been a little more rectangularish.

On the other hand, however, my Mom is usually either at home, or at work, and she only ever needs to check her email when she's at one of these two places. Both of these places already have PCs, which she has grown used to using after over a decade of much-the-same. She has no real need for a portable device that isn't portable enough to carry in her pocket, doesn't so anything that her PC can't already do, and requires a whole new approach to using the Internet.

The iPad would have been great ages ago, but I think there's too much institutionalization with regards to the way things have been before for it to really have the impact it should.

Also, I definitely think USB/Firewire should have been first and foremost on this thing. Virtually every major drawback with the lack of camera, external memory, etc. could be solved with a USB post and your old legacy peripherals.

Yes Josh, Apple seems to be doing something right and this time they are focusing on the broad consumer market.

And Multitasking, Camera definitely are on the Roadmap for the iPad, but coming to USB am not all that sure..
