@Ryan

It's cheaper to buy a low-end system from a manufacturer, but anything gaming-quality or media production quality you are much better served building your own. A rough estimate is anything over about $1200 from a manufacturer can be built for cheaper yourself, $900-$1200 break even, and less than $900 you'll be better off buying from Dell, HP, etc, especially if it's an entire new system (OS, monitor, etc) and not just an upgrade. For budget machines, the OS is such a huge portion of the cost that the $15 that Vista costs these manufacturers easily offsets any markup since it cost $150+ for an average consumer.

@Matthew....

I beg to differ...

Major computer companies buy their parts in MASSIVE BULK...by the thousands, and in turn get an incredible discount...

unless you are planning on building a computer for your specific needs with out of date hardware, buying a new computer (especially a laptop) is way cheaper or modern technologies...

laptops tend to be more crapified due to the audience that they are sold to....modern America...We believe that laptops are "cooler," which they are to an extent, so average joe buys an overpriced pc at best buy, and then pays even more when his never before used free trials already installed on it run out, and he is tired of nag screens....

I like this program because it allows me to get rid of the usual crap already installed, all in a few clicks when I have it installed on a flash drive and then I can do other things while it is decrapifying...

This program is nearly worthless. All you have to do is go to the control panel and look at the list of installed programs and uninstall whatever you don't want. It's an easy task, certainly not worth the time of downloading and installing a program to do it for you. If you really want to get rid of the 'crap' on your pc (old paging files, corrupted or invalid or missing registry keys, browser cookies, etc) download CCleaner. Fantastic program, easy to use, keeps your PC running like new.

Oh, and if you're buying a PC, you should seriously give some thought to building your own instead. It is an extraordinarily easy task--just google the basic steps and what parts are recommended, go to newegg.com and order them, and plug everything in. Costs about half of a store bought PC with the same amount of work, plus you really learn a lot.
