There are very few of us who just randomly browse about the web, always on the look for interesting sites. But most of the Internet users use Internet for mainly one reason and that’s to download all kinds of stuff from the internet.

We all tend to download stuff from the internet, be it music, softwares, movies or anything else. They are a few of them who can be better called as download junkies who like everything to be streamlined and automated in their download habits. If you are one of those, or want to be one of those then here are few tools that you must have.

Here they are in no particular order…

flashgetNothing beats Flashget for download management. The ultimate in the download managers out there. Flashget supports almost all the modern browsers and has nifty torrents download support as well.

utorrentThe most user friendly and lightweight torrent download software out there. uTorrent combines fast speeds with host of features like scheduling, encryption etc.. Its even got a Web UI that you can use to manage your downloads remotely.

emuleThe best P2P file sharing client. Based on the eDonkey2000 network but offers more features than the standard client. Great for sharing all kinds of files all over the world. Its feature rich, fast and easy to use when compared to Limewire.

filezillaIf you are looking for FTP management look no further. Filezilla is the best FTP software out there for any platform be it Windows, Linux. Got great features like site manager, message log, file and folder view.

ccleanerDon’t want your mom to know what you’ve been downloading? Then this is the app for you. Clean all the junk that is left after you’ve finished downloading. An uninstaller and a registry cleaner are also thrown in for good measure.

downthemallDon’t want a zillion apps to manage your downloads? Want to do everything right from your browser itself? If your answer is yes to the above questions try out the DownThemAll add-on for Firefox.

miroLooking to spend some time in entertaining yourselves? Try Miro the Internet television application that automatically downloads videos from RSS-based channels, manages them, and plays them. Entertainment at your door step literally!!

filehippoTired of updating all the softwares on your Windows machine? Immediately know which softwares have been updated without having to visit the individual sites. In a matter of clicks you can upgrade your softwares.

BitMeter is the bandwidth monitor. Just to make sure you don’t go on a downloading spree to get a hefty bill at the end of the month, use this app. You can also use it to track download and upload speeds.

Forget the good ol’ days of Winzip and Winrar. Almost anything you download on the internet today is compressed. You need a tool to uncompress all these files right? Universal Extractor is superior to any other archiving tool, and virtually supports every archiving format on the planet.

That is it.. Are you a download freak? Please share your tips in the comments.. Is there an app or software that I’ve missed, please let me know in the comments.

@V1, I'll consider reviewing similar tools for the Mac soon. Feel free to suggest your ideas.

@Palin, Yeah Firefox 3 wont need Flashget, but it still is a good addon to keep IMHO..
  • I have been using some of these and agree these are must haves. Firefox 3 though doesn't need Flashget anymore.

Nice list. I'd put limewire instead of utorrent (http://www.limewire.com), add InstallPad (kind of like download them all but also manages the install for you http://www.installpad.com), and add RadarSync (like FileHippo but does driver updates too http://www.radarsync.com)
