Planning to Upgrade to WordPress 2.5, Read This!

With WordPress 2.5 to be scheduled to be released today (I’m not sure if it will make it today or not) the whole blogosphere is going to go crazy with reviews of the latest version of WordPress. Many users would invariably encounter problems while upgrading, so here’s a check list by Lorelle Van Fossen to make sure that the upgrading to WordPress 2.5 goes off smoothly.

Let me cut out all the stuff and just list out the points here for a quick scan. You can read the full list over here.

  • Check Plugin and Theme Compatibilities
  • Update Themes and Plugins
  • Do a PreFlight Test
  • Disable and/or Remove Old Plugins
  • Backup your Database
  • Relax and Read (The finer print is what matters)

Whether WordPress 2.5 will be released today or not is still unknown. According to the chatter on the mailing list it looks like it still isn’t ready yet. Matt apparently mentioned a beta2 but the latest SVN tag mentions beta1 so I’m not sure if we will see WordPress 2.5 today.

In my opinion Matt and co is better off by delaying the release than to ship a buggy one. I won’t be upgrading to WordPress 2.5 for atleast two weeks as the new UI just doesn’t cut if for me. I feel that the latest UI is a step backwards in Admin design, but anyways that’s just my opinion.

I’m also testing out Habari at the moment, and I will publish my thoughts on it soon, so stay tuned for that. What are your plans for WordPress 2.5? Do you plan to upgrade as soon as it comes out or play the waiting game and upgrade later?

    I was attracted by the admin UI - much better than even the new WP 2.5 admin. Well done, Habari team.

    I don't think WP 2.5 will be released today or tomorrow. Besides, the first version of a new branch is always problematic, so it is wise to hold back for a 2.5.1 or something.
  • @Owen, I've been playing around with Habari since the 0.2 Developer Preview days and I must say I've been impressed by its growth. I'm planning to review it here on the blog sometime this week, and I plan to highlight the strength and weeknesses of Habari.

    Habari's comparison with Wordpress would be inevitable though..

    I'm anxious to get your opinions on it. We're making a big push for a 0.5 release before some events we're sponsoring in the summer, and the update will include things like podcasting support, a completed permissions system, and a polished admin interface, one that hopefully balances eye-candy against functionality well.

    Remember that one of Habari's best assets is its community, and if you're unsatisfied with Habari and have specific suggestions for improvement, we're listening.

  • Yeah, I'm not a great fan of eye candy. I'd probably wait and watch before upgrading myself
