Hack Attack : Dual Boot Leopard and Windows Vista

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed to receive more such tricks and articles in the future. Alternatively you can also subscribe via email. Thanks for visiting!

Here is a complete guide to get a Dual boot setup with Windows Vista and Leopard running side by side. Please note this is a complete tutorial and if followed exactly you should be running Leopard and Vista side by side without any problems.

osxleopard

Yes, this guide has taken over a month for me to write and I have tried this out every possible combination of hardware setup I could possibly test, and I can assure you that if followed correctly you can easily have Leopard and Vista in a dual boot setup.

Loads of readers have sent me emails, dropped comments on my previous guides on installing Leopard and here is the guide for all you guys who waited so long patiently.

Disclaimer : This Guide is for educational purposes only, I suggest you buy yourself a original Mac. Also please do not post links to the Torrent’s as they will be removed.

Well before we proceed with the guide, here is the stuff that you will need for a successful dual boot setup.

  • Vista Already installed on your Primary Hard Disk.
  • iATKOS v1.0 DVD. (Do not ask me where you can download this)
  • Windows Vista Boot DVD (Just incase something goes wrong)

Well now that you have everything ready, lets get started then. Please note this is going to take sometime so I suggest you have some Music playing near by and grab yourself a cup of coffee while you do this. Sit tight, here we go……….

  • Install Vista on the First Partition of your Hard Disk. I am not going to elaborate into How to install Windows, I hope everyone knows it. If you already have it installed then read on..
  • Right click on My Computer and Click on Manage. Select Disk Management. Now Create a new Volume for OSX by shrinking an existing volume. You need atleast 5GB of space and the new volume should show up as Unallocated.
  • Make sure that the partition shows up as Unallocated, else repeat the previous step.
  • Now restart the machine and boot into the Leopard DVD that you burned using the iATKOS v1.0 DVD Image.
  • Press F8 as the countdown begins and type -v at the prompt and hit enter.
  • You should see scrolling text on the screen now. If it stops anywhere then drop a comment and I’ll try to help you out.
  • After a while you should be looking at the Leopard Installer. Follow the instructions on Screen.
  • Once the Loading Bar vanishes Select Utilities -> Disk Utility .
  • Select the Volume you created previously and format it as MAC OSX Journaled Extended. Once the formatting is done the volume is ready for installation.
  • Now Close Disk Utility and Select Utilities -> Darwin Boot. Type Y at the prompt.
  • At the prompt when it asks for the Disk Number enter 0. For the Partition Number if your Leopard Partition is 2nd on the disk, then enter 2 and so on.
  • Accept the following prompts and you should see a success prompt saying that so many block of data were written successfully.
  • Now get back to the Leopard Install Screen. Choose the partition that you made in the beginning and follow the instructions on screen.

Please don’t select any patches etc during the installation, this is normally the reason for most failed installations. Just the plain install would do.

  • Once the Install is done, reboot with the DVD in the drive. Press F8 at Darwin Boot Loader and type -s and press enter.
  • Execute the following commands :

    fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0
    flag 1
    quit
    reboot

  • Now before the PC restarts remove the DVD. At this point you should be able to boot into Vista normally.

Note: If you are unable to log into windows, because there is an error which says “winload.exe” correupted.! Relax. Just insert the Windows VISTA boot DVD into the drive and restart. Click on “Repair computer” once you are inside the DVD and it will automatically detect if a problem exists and suggest “Repair and Restart”. Press the same, and remove the DVD once the PC is about to restart. You should now be able to log in to vista without any problem.

  • Now that we have almost everything running fine, lets proceed with the dual boot setup.
  • Boot into Vista. Copy the chain0 file from the Leopard DVD to C:
  • Open the “Command prompt” with “Elevated Admin” privileges from the Start Menu.
  • Type the following into the prompt

    bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS X”
    bcdedit /enum active
    bcdedit /set {GUID} PATH \chain0

In the first command type {current} as it is, literally..nothing else..just {current} with the brackets. In the 3rd command however, replace the {GUID} with the alphanumeric GUID you see in the enumerated list under MAC OS X. You can see this list on your terminal as soon as you type the 2nd command above.

  • Close the Command Prompt and Restart Vista.
  • You Should now be looking at a screen with two options to boot into Mac OSX or Vista.
  • Select Mac OSX to see if you can boot into it. You should see the familiar Darwin boot Loading screen with the timer going down. If you dont do anything, then it counts to zero and again shows the menu screen with Vista and MAC OSX options. Dont panic!

Again select MAC OS X, and now as the timer counts down, Press F8. You would see a list of partitions on your disk with their names. Select the partition with MAC OSX installed by using up/down arrows and press ENTER.

  • Voila!! your Mac should be booting up as you read this..

See it was that simple. No more HFS+ and Blinking Cursor errors. Just follow this guide step by step and you should be able to dual boot Windows Vista and Leopard in no time. If you have any questions just drop in a comment, I’ll reply at the earliest.

For Drivers and Patches I suggest you look at the InsanelyMac Forums. This guide would have been nearly impossible without :

  • OSX86 Wiki.

If you are looking to Install Leopard on an AMD based machine follow the instructions here to patch your iATKOS v1.0 Image. Special Thanks to I Am Nihilist

I suggest you use iAtkos v1.0i R2 instead of iATKOS v1.0 as selecting the boot loader in v1.0i R2 is easier than v1.0.

  2. bob

does this work with xp or just vista?

  3. I just got my new lappy back (dont worry about Cairo, it will be yours) but I plan on following this guide.

  4. Luc

Would this work with WinXP instead of Vista?

  5. Tyson

Thanks for the guide. I did this awhile ago and decided that i didn’t want Leopard anymore, so I deleted the leopard partition. When I start up there is still an option to either boot into Vista or leopard. Is there anyway to delete the leopard option?

    Thanks

  6. bob

just after running with -v, the text stops shortly after mac framework successfully initialized. any help?

  7. This guide was written with Vista in Mind. But it should work with XP, Only the last 5-6 Steps need to be modified for this to work with XP..

@Bob, Could you tell me your hardware configuration

  8. bob

sure thing. intel p4 2.8 ghz, 512 ram. windows xp sp2

  9. Mike Ryan

Do you know if there is any iAtkos releases that fully supports AMD processors yet?

  10. @Bob, Please give a little more details about your configuration. For example the details of Motherboard, Hard Disk, Graphics etc… would help.

@Mike, No I’m not aware of any iATKOS release for AMD Yet.. But there is a patch that you can use to make your install work with AMD.. I will update the post with more details on that in a moment..

  11. Mike Ryan

Thanks Karthik! This sounds incredibly easy to use, and I cant wait to get it working ;)

  12. @Mike, All the very best. Hope it works for you. If you have any problems do let me know. And yeah any news about the iPhone?

  13. bob

Its a laptop, sony VAIO pcg-k23.
HD: 120gb WD scorpio 5400 rpm eide, GX: radeon IGP 345M 64Mb video ram, MOBO: ATI RADEON IGP 345M

  14. Infectedco

How would you delete one of these boots if you accidently made a spelling mistake.

Also I can seem to get mine to work it comes back with this when I try to type the GUID:
The element data type specified is not recognized, or does not apply to the specified entry.
Run “bcdedit /?” for command line assistance.

  15. Tyson

Is there anyway to get rid of the Leopard boot option at startup, or at least make the Vista the default?

  16. AlbinoAsian

Thanks so much for the awesome tutorial,
    a couple questions though,

any problems with a tri boot? I’m thinking of getting rid of my XP install anywayz, but just wondered if there was any problems it would cause (Vista is set as primary)

has anyone had to use the DVD to fix up there Vista boot? just want to get a feel for the likelihood of it happening.

  17. @Albinoasian : I don’t think there should be any problem with a tri boot setup..

@Tyson : I’n not sure how you can do that, but I know that it is possible. Look into the OSX86 forums..

  18. Dan

OK, I got a chance to try this out last night. Thanks for the tutorial!!!

First I tried it out on my desktop. It started scrolling all the text and got to the part where it appeared to be looking for hard disks/partitions. Each line said something about waiting 100,000ms. This machine has a hardware SATA RAID-5 card at the moment and no regular IDE drive. I had setup an external USB drive with the unallocated space realizing that the RAID-5 card was probably not supported. I thought USB drives were supported?

I then tried my laptop (P4 3.x Ghz), 2GB RAM, etc. This got further. It went to a baby blue background after getting through the same steps that my desktop had jsut stopped on. Then it just sits there….I could leave it there for an hour or so and it is still just a baby blue background….nothing else.

Any ideas what I can do in either situation? I’d love to be able to run Leopard on one fo these machines.

    Thanks!

I have ubuntz and xp on my laptop (ASUS G1S AS022G) I wanna keep both of them and install osx as a third os.

Is it possible ro insrall os x on this laptop and if this is possible is it possible to make a triboot. Os x ubuntu and xp.
if that works, what os do i have to install first? And how do i do the last fev steps on ubuntu or xp?

  20. Reg Braithwaite

Hi, I’ve got meself a partition and SS3 processor, and can get as far as Darwin loading up - I type in “-v”, Darwin loads, comes up with about 7 lines of text, then the computer reboots rather than continuing to the leopard installation… any ideas?

  21. SmilinBob

So far I have prepared the partition, restarted the machine and booted into the Leopard iATKOS v1.0 DVD, I have pressed F8 and typed -v at the prompt.
My problem is that immediately after this step I see scrolling DOS style text which freezes up and never progresses. It displays the message:
“com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform” has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components:
    use only one style.

  22. Reg Braithwaite

Hi, I’ve got as far as Darwin loading up, but having typed in “-v”, rather than going to any further installation screen, it comes up with a list of 7 or so items, before restarting the computer. I’ve definitely got an SS3 processor and have partitioned the drive correctly (as far as i’m aware): is there anywhere else I’m likely to be going wrong?

  23. RobertCr

Any suggestions on a tri boot system with XP Pro, Vista, and Leopard on a RAID 0 machine? I could do this if it weren’t for the RAID array.

  24. RobertCr

    ALBINOASIAN.

I have used the Vista DVD to do a repair when I set up dual XP, Vista with Vista installed first. If you need to do it, it is a piece of cake.

  25. RobertCr

    TYSON
DOwnload a program called EasyBCD, you should be able to select and delete the OSX option from that program.

  26. Win Vista

i can only find iATKOS v1.0i

is it the same thab iATKOS v1.0 with out the i ?

  27. AlbinoAsian

robertcr: oh my laptop doesn’t have a Vista DVD, just a recovery DVD that would take it back to an original state, not really what I want.

  28. Mio

Hi! I tried to install iATKOS v1.0i (aprox. 2.44 GB) on my Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook (Core2Duo T7200 processor).
    After the line
    localhost DirectoryService[51]: Launched Version 5.0 (v514)
the installer stopped with no error message.

    Could you, please help me.
    Thank you!

  29. giovanni

okay everything goes fine until i get to the grey apple screen. it freezes and after 3 mins it shows a circle with a line going across. what do i do? please help me thanks!

  30. Simon

Thanks for the guide. I’m downloading right now, but have a question before I start installing… I have 2 hard drives in my laptop. My C drive which houses Vista and all my programs… And then a secondary D drive which is usually just for backups, images, music, etc…

Am I able to parition part of the D drive for the OSX install and boot from there? Or must it be on the same hard drive as Vista?

    Thanks.

  31. marnix

After I typed -v the text scrolls and then begins to repeat ‘Still waiting for root device’ many times and apparently the root doesnt show up. Any ideas?
    Thanks

  32. marnix

Guess I should also post my computer stats:

    Intel Core2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz
    4gb ram
    GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3P Rev 2.0 LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX
    Vista 32-bit

thanks for any help in advance

  33. AlbinoAsian

    I have a question about

    bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS X”
    bcdedit /enum active
    bcdedit /set {GUID} PATH \chain0

what does the /d relate to?

  34. AlbinoAsian

I got it installed, now just to get ethernet etc working =)
    thanks

  35. marnix

I would like to update that eventually I did get it to work past the ‘Still waiting for root device’ by plugging both the HD and the DVD-ROM into the same SATA (0) as master and slave, previously they had been hooked into different ones (0 and 2)

  36. Win Vista

i cant install this. It stops when the text flow over the screen and it doesen’t continue for half an hour, what can i do?

  37. giovanni

AHHH im at the same question again i keep getting stuck at the grey apple screen and after 3 mins. i get a circle with a line going across. please help.

  38. Peter

I want to Dual boot Leopard and XP.
So far I’v installed Leopard and it works, but I cant get the boot.ini to work.

I use 1 disk and it’s called C and C got 2 partitions XP is installed on Part. 1 och Leopard on Part. 2.
I’ve flaged part 1 so that XP works.

I’ve googled this a lot, but I can’t get it right.

  39. Robertcr

    Simon
You should be able to install on a partition on the separate HD. Once you set the BCD order, it will boot into where the OS was placed.

  40. Pc-kopat

    Hi all..
when I type -v and it starts to scroll texts it stops after “mac framework succesfully initialized”, when I wait more a text appears writing “Still waiting for root device” and it repeats that. Can any one help me please?

  41. Timothy

Everything has worked smoothly so far, and i didnt partition my drive instead, i installed my own harddrive to my computer. The mac install went fine and i created the boot loader but when i choose mac os x, it gives me “chain booting error” What do i do?

  42. John Igalsky

Got the DVD, started it up, and the boot stops on the following message:

    “localhost DirectoryService[51]: Launched Version 5.0 (v514)”

Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help.

  43. AlbinoAsian

those that get past the apple and then get a circle with a line in the screen, it could be a graphics card / driver issue. My guess anyways

  44. Meep

    Hi,
I got a DVD from my friend, but dont know its iATKOS v1.0 or not.
whenever i try to install MAC (only for testing), the screen with the apple sign comes and after a little while, a small sign with a circle and a cross on it pop ups. after that, it just goes on like that.

i tried pressing F8 and then -v, and may be the error i got was ” still waiting for the host file” or something like that.

is the same iATKOS v1.0 image or some other.

Sorry, i am a newbie and this question might seem a bit silly.

    Thanx in advance

    Meep

  45. Meep

    @AlbinoAsian

Well, i guess it cant be any graphics issue as i am able to install that using VMware.

  46. Robertcr

Took 2 days for the download, and I get file errors transferring the iATKOS to the DVD. Must have been a corrupt download. Oh Well. Looks like a lot of issues here in getting Leopard running on a PC. I guess if I plan on doing this, I will be buying a copy of Leopard, but researching further the woes of putting leopard on an Intel based machine. And checking elsewhere whether I can even do this in a RAID 0 set up. I might not even be able to do this at all.

  47. Dustin

Everything is working so far but when I get to “Select the Volume you created previously and format it…” but I cant find the unallocated partition that im suppost to install leopard on? HELP!

  48. John Igalsky

Turns out that to fix the problem above with “localhost DirectoryService[51]: Launched Version 5.0 (v514)”, I just needed to boot with these options:

    -v -legacy

  49. BB

I’ve been searching the internet but i can’t seem to find a guide that directly addresses a dual boot system between Leopard & XP.

You mentioned that the last few lines of your guide would have to be changed, but can you please be a bit more specific?

    Thanks.

  50. @BB :

Yes you could dual boot XP and Leopard without much trouble. Instead of using the command line to enter the stuff using bcedit, all you need to do is edit the “boot.ini” file to add a new bootloader entry and then dual boot XP and Leopard.

For more details on how to edit the “boot.ini” file please search google, meanwhile I am planning to write a guide for Windows XP as well..

  51. infectedco

Ok I have done everything and the dual boot is perfectly running on my dell. Now the only problem is that it does not accept my laptop as a laptop but a desk top meaning I have no battery icon and no power management for a battery. Also if I use mail with google IMAP it doesn’t give me any of the options of viewing my trash. If I load the cd instead of the dual boot way I get all my options running leopard with all the features including the battery icon running.

So my question is how do I get the boot off my computer to run the same way as the boot off the cd?

  52. marnix

    @DUSTIN

I couldn’t find the unallocated partition either, I just created a partition with no format and used the Disk Utility to format it to Mac OSX Journaled. Make sure it is the last partition on the drive or the utility will screw up everything afterwards. Vista CD was able to repair this for me but it takes a while and is a pain.

  53. JPI

GIOVANNI I have the same situation here, when it is starting I just get a grey screen with an apple in the middle and the circle. If I wait for more minutos it seems to be doing something else, sometimes. One time I saw the welcome but extrematly slow. It seems that the CPU or HD is freezing.

  54. Dan

I’m having this same issue is there a fix?

  55. Hello,

thank you fpr your great tutorial! But i have a problem: Everytime i insert the iATKOS DVD at boot and press anykey or press “F8″ and “-v” my PC (CPU-Z log: http://tinyurl.com/2nlxnz) restarts. Where is the problem? Teh first steps works without a problem… i hope you can help me.

    bye

    @ Karthik Kastury
    Hi,
I’ve been trying to edit the boot.ini. But I’m getting 2 error every time I try.
    1 error: “Can’t not find windows/system32/hal.dll
    2 error. “Chain0 boot error.

I don’t get those error att the same time, I’ve to change the boot.ini.

The XP system will run on HD 0 partition 1 and the Leopard will run on HD 0 partition 2.

    boot.ini

  57. Eli

Hi. I am working on a machine in which i would like to not have to make a new partition, but I do have an external USB hard drive. I know what different to to do when it asks for disk number, i would say 1 and it then wouldnt say the thing about the partition. But when it says:

    Execute the following commands :

    fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0
    flag 1
    quit
    reboot

I noticed it sayed “disk0″. Do i need to change that? Thanks.

  58. RMcLeod

Everything is fine up until Disk Utility which fails to see my hard drive. It’s a SATA on Intel ICH in RAID0 configuration. Any ideas?

  59. Win Vista

can anyone answer my question from zhe 7.3.08

    Hey all,

Did anyone of you try it with AMD Athlon XP 2000+ system.

Yes I know it is old but it is for testing. It has 640MB RAM & 128MB Graphics Card.

I currently have Win XP (C:\) & SUSE Installed in it.

How to install OS X Leopard on AMD based system.

  65. Peter

I figured that if you use the later iATKOS v1.0 DVD, r2 or something…you have to install darwin boot manually, I did this, and I just added
c:\CHAIN0=”Mac OS X” to the boot.ini file, and now it works, before I installed darwin boot I got the “Chain boot error”, now i loads MAC OS X insteed.

I dont know if this is the right way to do it, but it is a way that work. I will probably reinstall everything when the new Dual boot Leopard and XP guide is done.

Now I just got all the non compatible hardware problems…But my DV2222 runs Leopard:)

    ***Chain Booting Error***

Excelent Tutorial, I’ve followed right down to the letter.

I’m on my 2nd attempt at loading this on as the 1st time I ruined my Vista Partition, my bad… But using the CD in the drive Leopard booted and ran great [apard from the lack of NIC connectivity]

I’m doing this again, and I now have both Vista and OSX installed but only Vista is Running.

I’ve set up my boot loader and can successfully choose either MacOS or Vista.

When I do select OSx i get

    Chain Booting Error.

I ahve copied the Chain0 file over to the root of C: and also into c:\windows for good measure.

Now OSX will not boot from the CD either, Using Disc Utility all health checks come back fine.

Please Help… i’m off to trawl google!

    Niall

  67. antony

Hi PETER can you explain step by step how you installed atkos in dual boot with xp?
Can you copy and paste your boot.ini file?
    Thanks a lot

  68. BB

    @Peter

Can you specify how you manually installed darwin boot in XP?

  69. Peter

    Hi,
I did everything in the guide except the Darwin bootloader part.
But i chosed to customize and marked “Darwin bootloader” as an optional istallation file. Followed the rest of the guide and instead of doing “BCDEDIT” thing, I changed the boot.ini file to something like this:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional” /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    C:\chain0=”Mac OS X Leopard”

  70. Infectedco

Wow thanks for the tutorial. I have been running leopard great before this tutorial, but now it is easy to load leopard without the cd, but I have only one problem. Loading leopard off the cd gets me laptop controls, full use of Mail and chat, while booting off just the bootloader on the comp gets me to use leopard with less advantages such as no battery icon, no bluetooth unless i use -v at start up and less privelages in mail and chat.

So my question is how do I get the boot off my computer to run the same way as the boot off the cd?

  71. Cody

    Hi,
So i got the file iATKOS v1.0i and I make a partition on a hard drive in my computer (its actually the whole hard drive, i have 2) and I boot the cd from startup, press f8, and then type -v. Text starts scrolling and it stops at

    Kernel version:
Darwin Kernel Version 9.1.0: Sat Nov 17 02:56:34 SCT 2007; made by ToH:xnu-1228.0.2~1/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_I386

  72. Valy

I have Vista already installed…. I would like to try a tri or quad (!) boot with Vista-XP-Leopard-(and eventually Ubuntu 7.10). Do I ask too much? ^_^’
For a ’simply’-tri-boot :-D must I install all WindowsS before Leopard or can I try Leopard now and add XP later?
    Thankyou!!!

  73. Josh

What are the laptop system requirements for this dual boot

  74. Cody

    Hi,
I have since fixed my previous problem and got to the partition part and did that fine. But when I go to Utilities Darwin is not an option. What’s wrong?

  75. @RMCLEOD

I had the same problem, and fixed by setting my SATA to Native in the BIOS… And in the installation, I selected all the EFI drivers.

Everything is working perfectly, I’m using Leopard right now :D

How is the tutorial on dual booting xp and Leopard coming on…?
    It would be very helpful.

    Thanks

  78. Sliminbob and Dan - I have the same problem as you: namely,

“com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform” has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components:
    use only one style.

I have a Pentium C2D @ 3.0GHz, 2×250GB Seagate HDD under RAID 0. I’ve tried without the RAID and still get the same problem.

  79. CEYOS

I too followed exactly your guide and I am stuck at the point, when I can choose between Vista and MAC OS X on boot screen.
I get the damn “chain booting error” thingy.

Anyone got a fix for that? (Google and search doesn’t make me happy :( )

  80. andreimg

The only problem I have is that the Installer doesn’t recognize/see the hard-drive in the drive utilities nor the installer(SATA WD hard drive).
Yet if I boot on a PC with a WD ATA drive, the drive is recognized as well as the partitions.

My machine: Fujitsu-siemens laptop, Amilo Li1718, Intel dual-core 1.8, 160gb SATA WD hard drive, ati radeon 200m, 2gb Ram.

  81. I have the “chain booting error” problem here too. The letter case for chain0 is different in the tutorial and the disk. I’ve tried changing the casing on the file renaming it from c:\CHAIN0 to c:\chain0, mac os still doesn’t boot.

  82. Johnny

Hi, I am not trying to install a dual boot option but I am using the Kalyway 10.5.1 option. I have it burnt to disk and I get to the point where I press F8 and type -v

very shortly afterwards the whole thing hangs..

    Abit - IP35
    Intel Q6600
    ATi x1800XT 512
Samsung sata SH-S203 (just bought this because dvd wouldnt boot with an IDE DVD drive.

Please help. Appreicate it if you can.

  83. ROMAN

    HI

INSTALL GOES SMOOTHLY UNTIL I GET TO THIS STEP

“Select the Volume you created previously and format it as MAC OSX Journaled Extended. Once the formatting is done the volume is ready for installation.”

I CANT FIND THE UNALLOCATED VOLUME THAT I PREVIOUSLY CREATED, SO I CANT FORMAT IT. I LOGGED BACK INTO VISTA TO CHECK THE DISK MANAGER, AND IT SHOWS THAT I DO HAVE AN UNALLOCATED VOLUME THAT IS ABOUT 10 GIGS.

    CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT?

  84. Auggie

I would prefer to buy a copy of OS X and install in on my Core Duo SS3 machine. Does anyone know if I can just install a legit copy or does this only work with the Hacked version?

I have 4 computers and really don’t want to spend $3,000 on a MackBook Pro. I’ve set my machine up to dual boot with various other OS, Ubuntu, Xandros, etc. OS X just looks better.

    Anyone know for sure?
    Thanks

  85. Chris

I get to the screen when you first load up the iATKOS dvd and type -v. It runs a few lines and then my computer just restarts. Im running windows vista 64, with 2 raided harddrives, a EVGA 680i mobo, intel core2 quad q6600 processor EVGA 8800 gts 640mb and 4 gigs of ram. Any ideas? I was thinking about trying it with less ram installed.

  86. JOHN EVANS

NOT TO BE FUNNY OR ANYTHING BUT I DONT BELIEVE THAT THIS WORKS….. THE AMOUNT OF TIMES I HAVE TRIED THIS ON DIFFERENT SYSTEMS AND HARDWARE CONFIGURATIONS AND STILL RUNNING THE BORING OLD WINDOWS VISTA. IT HAS ONLY ONCE GOT PAST THE DARWIN BOOT AND WHEN IT DID IT WAS SAYING I HAD NO MOTHERBOARD OR ANYTHING I REALISE THIS IS DUE TO COMPATABILLITY ISSUES, AND THEREFORE I WENT TO BUY ALL THE HARDWARE I NEED TO GET MY PC WITH A SPEC THAT COULD RUN MAC OS X. I WOULD LOVE TO RETRACT THIS STATEMENT IF ANYONE COULD EITHER TELL ME WHERE IM GOING WRONG OR HELP ME TO FIX THE RECCURRING PROBLEM.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE,

    JOHN EVANS

    Re: Roman

Wow guy are pretty smart. Knowing how to make unallocated space and all that. But genius, you have to create a partition from that unallocated space. Duh! That is the only way you will see a disk to format.

Again the same question I have asked twice: does any one know why loading from chain0 on my comp disables laptop options while loading from the cd gives me full control (meaning leopard knows I am using a laptop and not desktop)? Also is there a way to fix it?

  88. Lucas

    Hi Karthik !

    Re: John Evans

Uhm I think that you just suck with computers or just plain retarded. I have done this countless number of times on my dell e1450 with many different configurations even tried updating to 10.5.2 which worked but I lost all my wifi, ethernet and sound.

Try installing with no additonal patches and make sure you go to utilitie and install the bootloader

  90. Brent Arnold

    ahh, so close…
Made all the way to the end and saw my options to boot from Mac OS X or Vista, I chose Mac OS X and it loaded vista. I am stumped. Any ideas?

OK, I’m downloading the hack copy. WOW is this slow! ETA is 8 weeks! Where are all the seeds? If no one has any help, I’m ready to go by OS X and try to install it on my machine. Maybe I just need to find out what specific hardware Apple is using so I can swap out a mini PCI card etc.

    Any ideas?

I could buy a used Macbook on ebay and have it delivered faster!

  93. Valy

I tried a tri-boot…. well I installed fisrt Vista then XP and I got XP running -without letting me choose (no boot menu)-. Then I restart with !ATKOS v.1.0i (I downloaded the image where I read ‘use this, the others have problems….’ at the bottom of the web page) in dvd drive but…. well…. it does not even begin countdown: what’s the problem? I have several seconds of the ‘VAIO’ screen and then XP boots. I tried to push all F[n], Canc or similar but nothing. The one that makes the bios start, if I have the DVD insert, makes the system block on a ‘push F2 to start….’ ?_?
    Any suggestion?
My pc is a Vaio TZ21MN/N notebook. Thanks :-)

Now I am getting the same error as Timothy, Maz, Peter, Niall, Ceyos and Gery Vessere….
    CHAIN BOOTING ERROR!!!!!
Anybody figure it out? Please share.

  97. Arnold,
I fixed my problem by making sure I use the “customize” button when i install using the atkos dvd. You need to make sure to select the x86 bootloader. Then following the posted instructions should get you to boot properly.

  98. kungfumaster007

I couldn’t wait for the XP tutorial so I just went ahead and tried to install Leopard on my XP Desktop but I’m getting errors.

    I have
    Gateway GT5036J
    Windows XP Home SP2
    Intel Pentium D 930
    3GB DDR2 RAM

I have XP installed on C: drive and installed Leopard on D: drive using iAtkos v1.0i R2.

    I copied CHAIN0 to C:\ and changed boot.ini to:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Home” /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
    C:\CHAIN0=”Mac OS X Leopard”

and I got Chain booting error.

Then I copied CHAIN0 to D:\ and changed boot.ini to:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Home” /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
    D:\CHAIN0=”Mac OS X Leopard”

and I got “Cannot find windows/system32/hal.dll” error.

What do I need to do to fix this? Please help.

I’ve been having the same problum for a long time now with several different leopard downloads. I have XP and Vista installed on my computer with Vista as primary. I would like to do a tri boot. Here’s the problum, when ever I load up disc everything goes okay untill after the white scrolling stops and your supposed get a colored screen where normaly a little colorful circle shows up and spins. I get the colored screen but it just hangs there I dont get the little pin wheel circle thing (showing loading). Any help, much appricated.

  102. Budgeo

I’ve installed iAtkos 1.0i R2 to an external USB Harddrive. I activate the drive, and follow the steps to get MAC OS X in to Vista’s bootloader, but when trying to boot MAC OS X I get the error ” CHAIN BOOT ERROR”. Is there some way that I must edit the bootstring so that it will acknowledge the USB harddrive.

  103. FAZE

When I try installing OSX, I get to the Darwin Boot step, and when I enter the information, I get this error:

hdiutil:unmount:”s2″ failed to unmount due to error 2.hdiutil:unmount failed - No such file or directorystartupfiletool: opendev(s2): No such file or directorydd: s2: Read-only file systemhdiutil:mountvol failed - No such file or directoryYou can quit the terminal.osx.Turk teamlogout[Process completed]

The result being that Vista’s boot record get’s messed up. I fixed it from the Vista install DVD once but the second time I had to completely restore. I make a new unallocated partition in Vista that is 10 GB’s, and then mount it in Disk Utility and format it. I checked it’s “Information” after I formatted it and it says Disk 0 partition 5. When Darwin Boot asks me for the disk I enter 0, and when it asks for the partition, I enter 5. I’ve also tried the disk as disk 1, partition 5, and get the same message as above, but that time I had to totally restore my computer. What could I be doing wrong that would cause this?

  104. Like someone above did, i too went ahead installing Leopard with XP. I faced the same error as Faze when using Darwin Boot Step. I added the line

C:\Chain0=”MacOSX LEO” and in next boot when in select this, it errors …

    “Chain Boot error”

Can anybody here help on this.

I encountered the same problem as you do.

I redo the installation selecting the Darwin x86 bootloader under Customize. This solved my problem. Good luck.

  107. BP

I am going to try using EasyBCD to solve my Chain booting error problem, I heard someone else fixed theirs that way. But if anyone wants to try this, report back please so i can try.

  108. Kevin Gould

I am having the same problem as FAZE posted today. Is there a method of loading the darwin boot loader manually in a Vista environment?

  113. Kelly

I just installed my copy of iATKOS 1.0i R2 on a Asus F3JV laptop. One thing that was missing from the above steps is that just before you install, you need to add Darwin Boot Loader from the Customise screen, even though the guide told you not to change anything.

You need this to avoid having the Chain0 error, as you will be using the Darwin boot loader instead of the windows one.

You need to make sure when you create your unallocated space for the Leopard installation you create it as a primary partition, and set it to active. That way when your system restarts after installation it will use Darwin boot loader, which detects your windows (XP) installation on the other partition.

KARTHIK, where are you? It seems there are a lot of questions about your guide to which no body else can answer!

  124. Dan

I am trying to do a tri-boot w/ vista xp and osx. I got osx installed using this guide, but now when I reboot without a cd all that comes up is Unable to Load Operating System. I can’t load any of them. I tried using the vista dvd to fix the startup but it said that nothings wrong. Now I can’t do anything… I really can’t afford to lose the data on any of the partitions because I have things I need for work. If anyone knows a solution please help. And if you could throw me an email about it at bartystewart@gmail.com that would be great.

  125. Dev

Im facing the same problem as usuf.. :(

after shrinking and repeating the process the same results r comming.. its only showing ‘free space’ not the unallocated space :(

i tried inserting vista nd xp’s cd/dvd and unpartionising.. but still did not work.. :( please help me..

  126. Dan

I just saw the comment left by FAZE. I had those same errors with the Darwin Boot. I really don’t want to have to wipe everything. Is there a way around that?

  127. meunier

Hi , I’m french (sorry for my bad english) ! when i use your guide to install mac OS x , the installation stop after i typ “-v” ( i see the text scrolling and it stop), more over i haven’t got HCPI mode , is it a probleme ??
    Thank You !

  128. Dan

Not sure why, but when i booted with an Ubuntu Live CD and erased the Partition for Mac my Vista boot is working again. My XP isn’t working and I’ve tried a repair install off of the disk, but nothing. I am now having the same problem as usuf. I created a 20g unallocated partition and when i go into the Disk Management utility all I see are the two partitions with windows. When I click on the hard drive and select partitions It can see that there is free space, but all of the options to do anything are grayed out.

  129. John

    Hey man,

Just dropping by to ask a quick question. I know its probably been asked but, here goes…

I know where to get the ISO img from and all, but was wondering - is this a legal thing to do? I mean, downloading it, then installing it - is it legal? please either, a) reply back here or b) email me : geekforhalo2-at-gmail[dot]com

    Many thanks!

  130. FAZE

DAN, that’s what happens to me also; all the options are greyed out, and when I try to “mount” the partition, is says that it cannot be mounted. I don’t even have a “format” option unless I click my whole hard drive. If I just click the partition itself, I only get options to check and repair the disk. There has to be an extra step somewhere that we aren’t doing that was left out of the tutorial.

  131. Dan

    Faze,

Is your partition showing on the left side of the disk manager?

  132. FAZE

    Dan,

Only if I format it through Vista first. Then, it shows up in the list with my other partitions under my hard drive, but I can’t do anything with it; the only way I can see an unallocated partition is if I choose to “partition” my main hard drive, in which case it shows up unallocated, but has no option to format.

  133. Dan

Alright well at least we are on the same page. I also tried it on a couple of computers… so maybe we are missing a step somewhere? Anyone got any ideas to help us out?

    Thanks

  134. FAZE

I may try to find a utility that will format for Mac OS X Journaled inside of windows, so I can skip that disk utility step, and go straight to darwin boot, but I’m going to install sp1 and make an image of my computer in case I can’t boot into vista again.

  135. Dan

What’s the best way to make an image of you computer?

  136. FAZE

Acronis True Image (50 dollars for a license).

    dears all,

i’m not sure doing everything right. but untill now i didn’t get it work.

as describe in the howto after loading iaktos (not sure about my version) i used the disk utility but could not find darwin boot in the menu utilities. even though before i didn’t see the difference betwenn letting the system autoboot after pressing f8 the iaktos disk or following the howto. i always said x86 darwinboot after counting down. anyhow i did it the one or the other way the iaktos started and the installtion was easy but then nothing works out like the howto says. even after taking out the disk no system at all was found.

meanwhile i got the computer this fare back that it accepts the iaktos again and maybe through this i will be abel to start again from vista.

otherwise if there are some changes in the howto with a never version of iaktos i could or must say would be thankfull for some help.

Cody (and anyone else with this as the final thing you see when you install with -v):
Darwin Kernel Version 9.1.0: Sat Nov 17 02:56:34 SCT 2007; made by ToH:xnu-1228.0.2~1/BUILD/obj/RELEASE_I386

How did you make it go away so I can continue installation?

  148. Samip

i have been stuck at the message “still waiting for root device” for over 2 hours. any suggestions?

  149. andreimg

    @Kalifax

Nope, I’m guessing it has something to do with the laptop’s hard drive-dvd drive configuration, because if I just click next where it prompts me choose a disk, the dvd drive is the only option (again..absolutely nothing shows up in the Disk Utility).

Hope there will be an XP version to this guide, to install on a pc where the disk is displayed correctly.

hey found a solution to boot chain error in install costumizing you have to select the EFI MBR V8 option

and your mac partition must be primary
look to your mac partition with EditHexa utility : check wether your partition has a valid boot sector … The last two bytes should read “AA55″.
Else, the boot sector of the partition won’t be accepted by chain0.

    it works!!!!!!!!!
    beautiful mac OSX
made it work with amd prossessor

can you maake a video tutorial
that would help out a lot

  155. SlimJim

OK, I made it past the “BOOT CHAIN0 ERROR”. I had to rename my drive to “MAC_OSX” and reinstall the OS using the “Customize” option and selecting the “EFI Bootloader” only with NONE of the other options listed with that selection. I didn’t select the x86 Bootloader either. But, all is not well. I get to the grey Apple screen with the Apple logo and the progress circle and then it hangs. I am going to reinstall with the EFI Bootloader (no options) and the x86 Bootloader and see if that makes a difference. I tried installing with ALL of the bootloader options selected and that just kept cycling through the boot process. I will post my results from my next experiment as soon as I have them.

This guide seems great! Hopefully I can get it to work on XP.

I’m using Partition Magic 8.0 to repartition my drive since I don’t have VISTA. How do I setup up the partition using this software? Specifically, I am lost at making sure the partition is ‘unallocated’.

  159. Jason

I guess I spoke too soon, because I just figured it out. Incase anyone else is wondering (with Partition Magic 8) you need to click ‘Resize a Partition’. It will ask you which drive you want to resize, then enter the new size. (the current size minus the amount you want unallocated). The next step asks which partition to give the unused space to. This is where you have to make sure all the boxes are unchecked and then click next. The screen screen will show you unallocated partition.

what type of Partition magic are u using? (legal or cracked?_)

    *** BOOT CHAIN0 ERROR ***

Hi guys, I have read all the comments and I wish to give my feedback.

For some reason the Utility -> Darwin Boot option is missing from my installer. I got away by skipping that step and by adding the utility using the customize menu.

The problem is that I can’t really get the dual boot working. I get the “BOOT CHAIN0 ERROR”

I am trying to reinstalling and using different DARWIN BOOTS (EFI and x86) but still get that error. Apart from installing the tool do I need to do something like running it?

There is any way to boot into my Mac OS X without the boot loader? There is an option I can use from the CD to load my Mac OS X installation (not the installer)?

  162. Jason

    It’s a legal copy.

  163. Now you know how I feel. Welcome to the club Jason!

  164. james

Does it have to be vista or can it be xp?

  165. S059

Been trying this for 2 weeks…
I type -v then see scrolling text on the screen.
    Then it stop on

    localhost DirectoryService[51]: Launched version 5.0 (v514)

Any idea how can the installer continue? Help!

  166. S059

JAMES, I got the same problem too.
For 2 week s,the installer just stops at

    localhost DirectoryService[51]: Launched version 5.0 (v514)

    and refuses to continue.

Any idea how can the installer continue?

  168. Alain

    Hi,

Have pressed F8 as the countdown begins and typed -v at the prompt and hit enter.
The text was scrolling on the screen, and then it stopped.
