Hack Attack : Dual Boot Leopard and Windows Vista
Here is a complete guide to get a Dual boot setup with Windows Vista and Leopard running side by side. Please note this is a complete tutorial and if followed exactly you should be running Leopard and Vista side by side without any problems.

Yes, this guide has taken over a month for me to write and I have tried this out every possible combination of hardware setup I could possibly test, and I can assure you that if followed correctly you can easily have Leopard and Vista in a dual boot setup.
Loads of readers have sent me emails, dropped comments on my previous guides on installing Leopard and here is the guide for all you guys who waited so long patiently.
Disclaimer : This Guide is for educational purposes only, I suggest you buy yourself a original Mac. Also please do not post links to the Torrent’s as they will be removed.
Well before we proceed with the guide, here is the stuff that you will need for a successful dual boot setup.
- Vista Already installed on your Primary Hard Disk.
- iATKOS v1.0 DVD. (Do not ask me where you can download this)
- Windows Vista Boot DVD (Just incase something goes wrong)
Well now that you have everything ready, lets get started then. Please note this is going to take sometime so I suggest you have some Music playing near by and grab yourself a cup of coffee while you do this. Sit tight, here we go……….
- Install Vista on the First Partition of your Hard Disk. I am not going to elaborate into How to install Windows, I hope everyone knows it. If you already have it installed then read on..
- Right click on My Computer and Click on Manage. Select Disk Management. Now Create a new Volume for OSX by shrinking an existing volume. You need atleast 5GB of space and the new volume should show up as Unallocated.
- Make sure that the partition shows up as Unallocated, else repeat the previous step.
- Now restart the machine and boot into the Leopard DVD that you burned using the iATKOS v1.0 DVD Image.
- Press F8 as the countdown begins and type -v at the prompt and hit enter.
- You should see scrolling text on the screen now. If it stops anywhere then drop a comment and I’ll try to help you out.
- After a while you should be looking at the Leopard Installer. Follow the instructions on Screen.
- Once the Loading Bar vanishes Select Utilities -> Disk Utility .
- Select the Volume you created previously and format it as MAC OSX Journaled Extended. Once the formatting is done the volume is ready for installation.
- Now Close Disk Utility and Select Utilities -> Darwin Boot. Type Y at the prompt.
- At the prompt when it asks for the Disk Number enter 0. For the Partition Number if your Leopard Partition is 2nd on the disk, then enter 2 and so on.
- Accept the following prompts and you should see a success prompt saying that so many block of data were written successfully.
- Now get back to the Leopard Install Screen. Choose the partition that you made in the beginning and follow the instructions on screen.
Please don’t select any patches etc during the installation, this is normally the reason for most failed installations. Just the plain install would do.
- Once the Install is done, reboot with the DVD in the drive. Press F8 at Darwin Boot Loader and type -s and press enter.
- Execute the following commands :
fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0
flag 1
quit
reboot - Now before the PC restarts remove the DVD. At this point you should be able to boot into Vista normally.
Note: If you are unable to log into windows, because there is an error which says “winload.exe” correupted.! Relax. Just insert the Windows VISTA boot DVD into the drive and restart. Click on “Repair computer” once you are inside the DVD and it will automatically detect if a problem exists and suggest “Repair and Restart”. Press the same, and remove the DVD once the PC is about to restart. You should now be able to log in to vista without any problem.
- Now that we have almost everything running fine, lets proceed with the dual boot setup.
- Boot into Vista. Copy the chain0 file from the Leopard DVD to C:
- Open the “Command prompt” with “Elevated Admin” privileges from the Start Menu.
- Type the following into the prompt
bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS X”
bcdedit /enum active
bcdedit /set {GUID} PATH \chain0In the first command type {current} as it is, literally..nothing else..just {current} with the brackets. In the 3rd command however, replace the {GUID} with the alphanumeric GUID you see in the enumerated list under MAC OS X. You can see this list on your terminal as soon as you type the 2nd command above.
- Close the Command Prompt and Restart Vista.
- You Should now be looking at a screen with two options to boot into Mac OSX or Vista.
- Select Mac OSX to see if you can boot into it. You should see the familiar Darwin boot Loading screen with the timer going down. If you dont do anything, then it counts to zero and again shows the menu screen with Vista and MAC OSX options. Dont panic!
Again select MAC OS X, and now as the timer counts down, Press F8. You would see a list of partitions on your disk with their names. Select the partition with MAC OSX installed by using up/down arrows and press ENTER.
- Voila!! your Mac should be booting up as you read this..
See it was that simple. No more HFS+ and Blinking Cursor errors. Just follow this guide step by step and you should be able to dual boot Windows Vista and Leopard in no time. If you have any questions just drop in a comment, I’ll reply at the earliest.
For Drivers and Patches I suggest you look at the InsanelyMac Forums. This guide would have been nearly impossible without :

If you are looking to Install Leopard on an AMD based machine follow the instructions here to patch your iATKOS v1.0 Image. Special Thanks to I Am Nihilist
For me, it stops at "Kernel version: Darvin Kernel Version 9.0.0" & Date & "; root:xnu-1228~1/RELEASE_I386" Could anyone help me?
Lagax_ so you got it working??? or not yet???
This guide is incorrect!!! Mac OS X installer will not complete the installation to a drive that has the MBR partition table (if vista/7 already installed). If you are starting from scratch format your drive to GUID and then install Windows and Mac on separate partitions. My solution was to install to a USB drive (16GB) and then use SupeDuper to copy the installation to an MBR partition on my Windows drive. Mac OS X can run on a MBR partition, it's the installer that has issues with it.
dizziii, i found the solution to my problem, and that's the solution to your problem as well. I think atleast. What to do to fix the "Chain boot error"
Boot from your iAtkos 1.0i disk again. Let it prepare the installation, but when the installation screen pops up, go to ultilities > darwin boot.
When it ask's for HDD, type 1. Do not type 0, because for some reason it doesnt work out.
Then select your partition as normal and let it install. You wont get errors.
I now have another problem because my boot progress gets stuck at a certain point, but im trying to fix this as well.
Good luck all.
I also have the issue a lot of people described below me;
chain booting error.
I tried multiple fixes but nothing seems to solve the problem.
I did however copy the correct GUID. The bcdedit command is nothing new for me. I know nothing could've go wrong there. The only think i could think of is that the CHAIN0 file is corrupted. Can someone verify this, or propose another way to fix this? Thanks.
Little edit:
After last command I have path chain0 in module Mac OS X, but it not run - ""
My bcdedit:
==============
ID {current}
device partition=C:
path Windowssystem32winload.exe
description Windows Vista (TM) Ultimate (recovered)
osdevice partition=C:
systemroot Windows
resumeobject {f7084c6c-bfb6-11e0-ac4f-806e6f6e6963}

description Mac OS X
osdevice partition=C:

resumeobject {f7084c6c-bfb6-11e0-ac4f-806e6f6e6963}

..probably i should change device, osdevice and systemroot, but for what value??
Hi
Exactly like Ec, after finish tutorial, when I chose Windows - windows starts up fine. But when I choose "Mac OS X", still starts up windows.
When I run "bcdedit" I saw two identical modules with path Windowssystem32winload.exe. This one added by me with command 'bcdedit /copy {current} /d "Mac OS X"' had the same path and guid. Last command ('bcdedit /set {GUID} PATH chain0') didn't work (in "GUID" i of course paste GUID I received in previous command). But when run command ''bcdedit /set {current} PATH chain0' it works fine - changed path for "Mac OS X" module.
...but anywat - both of them ("Windows" and "Mac OS X") runs Windows :/
How can I change path to run Mac OS??
i have windows 7 installed already, and when i load the DVD for leopard, i use -v and wait. I get an error: Firewire unable to determine security -mode. I dont know if u need to know that but the problem is after that it says "Still waiting for root device"
Error: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-secure.
Still waiting for root device
Hi there. I want to install MAC OS on my laptop which is running Windows7, but the thing is my HDD has only one partition (C:). Will shrinking it create a second partition into this one or I should reformat my HDD so that I have 2 separate partitions? Thank you.
I am attempting to triple boot Windows Vista, Linux (Ubuntu) and Snow Leopard all on different partitions. The original operating system was Windows, and Ubuntu has installed successfully, but im unsure what to do, and what i need to install snow leopard as well. Cheers for any advice
My PC will not boot to MAC OS X when it is selected it just boots windows again . Now I have 2 Mac OS X at boot menu how do I get rid of them?
I tried and the screen freezes after it beings the code scrolling. It repeats the beginning line of the code and then just stops responding. I have to turn my computer off and back on in order to get anything to happen. And in reply to the comment below me I do not know.
Before i get to the leopard installer it shows a gray screen with what i guess is the loading mouse. The thing is that it lasts a longtime. I don't know if it is supposed to but i get impatient. I've never got to the installer i just restart after like ten minutes.
HeY
i've burned the iArktos DVD now an wanna to start my computer with it.
It starts up an I press F8 and type -v into the Promt. Now some lines are following but after 2-3 seconds my computer reboots without me doing something.
I need help...
Your problem is that your computer is set to automatic restart upon system failure.
1) Go to the START menu and type sysdm.cpl and hit ENTER
2) Change to the Advanced tab and click on Startup and Recovery -> Settings
3) Uncheck Automatically Restart and then click OK to save
At the Startup and Recovery settings, you can also change your default operating system to Mac so your computer will boot with Mac unless you tell it otherwise.
after i hit -v and enter, the "scrolling text" stops at
Extension "com.apple.driver.ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi
nets; use only one style.
I have the OS on the disc, however... when I go to boot into the cd I get into a problem. It loads correctly and everything but you said the text is supposed to keep goin on? It stops after 4-5 lines and boots normally.
Anybody else had this problem? Help if ya can, thanks.
i have the same problem as placebo and Vipcrim

I seem to have an unforeseen problem when attempting to use this method to dual-boot Win7 and OSX.
When I get here...

Basically its the PC standard for your software controlling power to your hardware. You can try booting with platform=X86PC before you enter the -v flag.
If that doesn't work I will need more detailed hardware. Specifically, the model of your mobo and how you have set up your hard drives/cd drives. (If you're on a laptop just tell me the model)

so i did everything per the instructions. when i start my computer, i come to the menu to select windows or Mac OS X. I can start from windows fine but when i try to start mac, it comes with with the windows boot manager saying that windows failed to start.
Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
i think this is because the computer doesnt know which partition its booting from.
Any help would be appreciated.
There's your problem. You made the partition, ok good, but you must NOT format it in ANY way!! Leave it as unallocated!! In other words:
Control Panel --> Administrative tools --> Computer mangament --> Storage
There you make the partition, however, ALL you have to do is shrink your mani volume (partition), and that's it. Don't actually format the new partition, just leave it unallocated (it'll be colored black).
I have successfully installed Leopard. But after the installation was over i tried to boot to Mac OS X by choosing it, it starting to load and then the mac loading screen is stuck. I tried to push all kinds of keyboard combination and then a melody is starting (?!?) . After a few restarts its showing a window with some 4 language text saying "You need to restart you computer...". Help please!

Plz reply.....I m stuck since very long
If you get this dual boot working I suggest you never use the Mac OS system update or it will screw up all your hard work. I had everything working, including kexts (aka drivers) for Ethernet, bluetooth and video card, etc. and after updating, everything went down the shizhole. Have to redo everything.
I'm stuck and would appreciate some help. After I type in -v and the text starts scrolling down it stops and reads "ERROR- Fire wire unable to determine security mode; defaulting to full secure. Regarless the error, it actually get into the Mac OS X Installer afterwards. I format the partition to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and it's time to go to the next step (Select Utilities -> Darwin Boot. Type Y at the prompt) but there is not an option for Darwin Boot under Utilities. I have iATKOS v.7
I get this error too, but it actually get into the Mac OS X Installer afterwards. I format the partition to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and get it's time to go to the next step (Select Utilities -> Darwin Boot. Type Y at the prompt) There is not an option for Darwin Boot under Utilities. I have iATKOS v.7, pressed F8, -v, and followed eveything as adviced.
i have a question, i already have a partition for win7 and winXP, and a dual boot setup at the starting that appear itself when i installed winXP, my question is, if i install macOS X and the dual boot as this tutorial says, would appear in the boot screen all three(Win7, WinXP, MacOSX) operative sistems that i have in my PC?, cause i don't wanna loose mi WinXP partition.
If you decided to do this dual boot and you know how to copy one partition to another. I strongly suggest you backup your OSes. Make a note of the original partition sizes. Having said that, I think this should work but I have not tested.
Create enough space on your HDD to install the Mac OS. If you need to shrink your window partitions, do disk defragmentation (start->accessories->system tools->disk defragmenter) and then shrink (right click my computer-> manage->disk management->right click partition->shrink volume). You need to free at least 5-6 GB to install Mac OS. You only need to shrink your 3rd partition (may this be your win7 or xp) if you shrink both you will probably be left with you unallocated spaces and you can't combine them unless they are adjacent to each other, so only shrink the last one.
Format the unallocated space with any format (I don't think it matters, NTFS worked for me). This will allow you to see it later.
Install Mac OS X follow instructions above, at the Darwin bootloader step use 1 for hard disk (do not use 0) and the partition where the Mac OS lies (I'm guessing you have it in the 4th partition, so input 4, since you have system reserved, win7, xp and new Mac). Do not install the Mac OS betfore the win7, it causes problems with the bootloader. If you have followed this so far it should be in your last partition.
After you install the Mac OS X, your windows bootloader probably won't work anymore, use the Mac OS DVD to do the fdisk step described above, then use windows 7 DVD to repair. It should work, you might need to run the windows DVD repair twice one to allow it to find the windows partition and then again to repair it. Each time will require to reboot (it just works that way).
After repairing the bootloader boot into windows 7 (you might be missing xp and you will be missing Mac for sure). Install easybcd, and use it to edit the boot menu.
Your win7 and xp should work easily, but Mac OS depends if you did everything here right. The key steps are the Darwin Boot and installing in last partition. Otherwise, it most likely did not work.
This is very risky, and many things could go wrong. Unless you really want the Mac OS and are willing to reinstall win7 and xp from scratch I suggest to not try it.
If anything goes wrong use your backup to restore. You can even use disk cloners, to make an exact copy of the original disk that you can copy back.
Note: You dont need to format the new unallocated space but you do need to create a new volume on it (RAW)
Very good guide, could use some updates.
At the beginning, where is says to leave the empty disk space unallocated, this didn't work for me. When I run the Disk Utilities from the Mac DVD it doesn't even show up in the list. Once I format it (I used NTFS), I can later see it in the list and can format it as Mac OSX Extended (Journaled), I used the zero-out option from the security options menu. Not sure if this made a difference but it worked for me.
As someone mentioned before, in the Darwin Boot step there is a mistake. For disk0 you need to input 1, not 0. For partition, the number is the same. Example: hard disk 1 partition 3, will be disk0s3. This is confirmed by the string of messages that follow saying the operation was successful, if you look carefully somewhere is says the changes where performed to {some direction}/disk0s3.
Also in the step after MacOSX intallation where it says to input fdisk... flag 1. The 1 corresponds to the Windows OS partition, so if you have your Win OS in a partition different than 1 this info could be useful, but then again it doesn't make much diference bc I think most people will have to use the Windows DVD to repair the bootloader anyway.
BTW, this does work for Windows 7, kind of. This is an overview of what I did and it worked.
Install Windows 7 first. Windows 7 will create a System Reserved partition, so you have (at least) 3 partitions: System Reserved, Windows 7 and Leopard.
Install Mac OS X, follow the instructions above along with my comments, remember to input hard drive 1, partition 3 for disk0s3.
Once the Mac OSX is installed and the PC reboots it will automatically run a Mac OSX 'first time run' thing. Just wait for the whole thing to finish an reboot again (with Mac DVD still in). Then do the fdisk part above, use flag 2, instead of 1. Even though it doesn't make much difference bc this only seems to achieve to overwrite the Mac bootloader, but the Win bootloader is already "broken". After rebooting, remove the Mac DVD drive.
If you get a missing boot information message put the Windows DVD, reboot and press any button to enter DVD menu. Click Repair your computer. At this point the DVD looks for Windows OSs, once found it asks you to reboot. After rebooting go back to Repair your computer and now you should see the Windows 7 partition. With the first option selected and Windows 7 highlighted click "Next >", then click "Startup Repair". Once successful it will ask you to reboot. Reboot. Remove Windows DVD.
You will boot into the Windows OS.
I tried the bcdedit instructions, but didn't work for me so I used EasyBCD. If you use this software make sure you select drive C: for Mac. The drive just specifies where the boot files will be stored, not the actual OS, so the boot files of Mac are installed in the Windows partition. Unless I forgot something, this dual boot should work fine.
Good luck.
i also got the same problem with my Vista DVD once i wrote it in 2x speed in Roxio.
It is good to burn DVDs in 12x speed and it also last long without any data error and uncheck the "Multisession DVD" option so that it will boot correctly
if srill it wont boot then use any other Burning Software Like Nero Or roxio Ultimate Creator
Hope its Helpful for u
Hell there, so I installed it successfully and it worked, but now when I try and reboot to the disk and strike F8. It doesn't do anything it just goes to the white apple screen, tries to load then freezes, it won't let me get to the Darwin boot at all. Could you please help me out here?
Thank You
After I hit -v my computer reboots rather then going to the load screen, why is that? And is there a way for me to fix this issue?
Hi,
the is one slight mistake: when setting up the darwin boot you should NOT enter 0 as hdd-number, but 1 for the actual disc0, 2 for the actual disc1 and so on.
I found out by reading what was actually written there, after my first try didn't work.^^
It took me a few times, but it actually is working all fine now, in the end, so don't get tired trying!
Hey, Thanks for the post. I Inserted the disk initiated the loading, but it stopped on the "scrolling text" at:

Hello,
I am attempting to install MAC OS X 10.5.5 on dual boot with Windows 7. The installation was moving along successfully until I received the following error message.
Mar 22 14:53:29 localhost diskarbitrationd[44]: CoreRAIDServer [43]:17163 not responding
How do I troubleshoot the error?
Ok, I get through the installation ok, but when it starts up, I have no sound, and it gets stuck at the "Do You Already Own A Mac" screen. When i click continue, it just freezes for a minute, and then starts the whole setup over again. Ive tried reinstalling it twice, and still no luck
TechBug: I just have one small problem. Everything worked fine, except once in the Vista / Mac OS screen, both boot Vista. What am I doing wrong?
Mac OS is instaled in disk1s6
Windows is installed in disk1 (not on disk0), so i don't know if the "fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0" is correct.
I just had one error with your guide, after the fdisk command and rebooting, I got a "boot0: testing / error". I just repaired Windows but I honestly don't trust the fdisk command with my HDD layout (not being disk0, etc)...
Please help.
Brother Use easy to use program EASYBCD beleive me it do a magic with boot manager
just some clicks and u can boot into the MAC without and fdisk and commands
try and reply
