Hack Attack : Easily Activate/Jailbreak/Unlock iPhone 1.1.4

Apple released the latest firmware for iPhone early today. While ZiPhone was claimed to be working for most people on the latest firmware, but they were widespread reports that ZiPhone couldn’t activate phones with Firmware 1.1.4 but could successfully Jailbreak and Unlock it.

This time around a guy named George (Not to be confused with George Hotz of the Gunlock fame) has come up with a simple solution to Activate and Jailbreak iPhones with the latest firmware.

Before I go into the specifics of this hack, let me point out that this hack is based on the same RAMDISK exploit that ZiPhone is based on. The tool released by George will only Activate and Jailbreak firmware 1.1.4, so to Unlock it you would still need to use ZiPhone.

Here is what George had to say while coming up with the exploit :

Okay, the firmware 1.1.4 has been released, since my phone is running 1.1.3 with bootloader 3.9, and there’s a very convenient tool named ZiPhone out there, so I decided to give 1.1.4 a try. In case anything’s wrong, I can always return to a previous version.

So I update my 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 with iTunes, the update was completed without hassle, at the end of update (after iPhone restarted), iPhone stayed in SpringBoard (same as it was during my last 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 update), so I checked the version, yes, it is 1.1.4 with baseband 04.04.05_G.

Then I restarted my iPhone and expected it’ll be stuck at the activation screen, and yes it did stopped there, now I need to find a way to jailbreak and activate it.

As I have played with ZiPhone some days ago and are familiar with the way it works, so I quickly created a new ramdisk which jailbreaks the phone and adds the afc2 support so that I can get the new lockdownd to analyze. I jailbreak my 1.1.4 with the customized ramdisk, then I use iPHUC to get the new lockdownd 1.1.4.

Yes, it’s possible to install SSH during the jailbreak, but I was just too lazy to do it, besides, iPHUC could do everything I needed except running shell commands which was not needed at the moment.

    I have bought my 1.1.4 version iPhone in Asia and they told be I should never upgrade it via iTunes otherwise it will be locked. Though, I want to upgrade it to start downloading apps etc... How can I do this the correct way?

  • ive jailbroken & unlocked 3 phones so far, only problem ive seen is that youtube doesnt work and the 3rd party software that people have created is not supported with 1.1.4 but there are still ways around that :)

  • @ Ben: Exactly. They need to unlock the iPhone soon or they might find that there is no hope in continuously spending on technology to 'lock' unlocked iPhones. They should spend their resources on better things like a cheaper line of mac desktops, not just the iMac
  • At last 1.1.4 also hacked..
    I dont know why Apple is still holding their ethics tightly.. Always hackers wins... And Apple is always giving them a job.. Breaking the Firmware :P
