The Ubuntu team is at hard work and I must say I’m impressed with the work that has been done so far. Ubuntu 8.04 is on track to be shipped on April 24th 2008, and in the early stages of its development it continues to impress me with the new features being added..

This alpha release comes with HOT new features and improvements, like PulseAudio as the default sound system, the latest and greatest 2.6.24 Linux kernel and Xorg 7.3, with an emphasis on better autoconfiguration without config files

“The Ubuntu developers are moving very quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source Community has to offer. Hardy Heron Alpha 2 is the second alpha release of Ubuntu 8.04, and with this new alpha release comes a whole host of excellent new features.”

Well here is what is new in Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha :

  • Xorg 7.3
  • Linux kernel 2.6.24
  • PulseAudio

With the release of Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha2, even  Kubuntu 8.04 Alpha 2 was released yesterday :

What’s new in Kubuntu 8.04 Alpha 2?

  • KDE 4 RC 2
  • Amarok 1.4.8
  • Qt 4.3.3
  • Digikam 0.9.3 RC 1
  • Tasty Menu
  • Speedcrunch 0.9
  • KGmailNotifier
  • Thinkpad Flashing for Kopete
  • Rear Speaker Volume Support in KMix
  • SMB Printer Browsing
  • User Hard Disk Mounting
  • Adobe Flash in Konqueror

If you wish to download Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha 2, you can grab it from here or incase you want Kubuntu 8.04 then you can download that from here. Please note that this is an Aplha release, so you can expect many bugs in the system.

  1. wtf

lets hope the interface is isn’t too fuzzy this time around wink wink….. even with the latest graphics card drives, wink wink.. hint.

Yeah, and you can go insane trying to get your drivers working after installing it on a new box that came “bundled” (read: “jammed up your keister”) with Vista—because, God knows, glitzy new eye-candy is MUCH more important than things like DRIVER SUPPORT!

Don’t misunderstand me, I WANT to use Linux. But this ndiswrapper abomination is typical of Linux: wading through 50,000-word “instructions” written in Martian, to perform a task that, in Windows, takes a few clicks.

(And, no, I’m not a n00b. I’ve written Tetris in a 27kb bookmarklet that makes GnomeTetris look lame.)

Seriously, people, don’t start talking about garnering a serious share of the OS market until things like (admittedly outstanding) screensavers take a back seat to ease of use.

Anyone know if it will support Direct X 10 for some of the newer kick butt video cards comming out?

Let’s get out of the darkages and into the light!

  4. DJ

Direct X 10 is only for Windows Vista the last time I checked.

  5. Will it support wifi out of the box? Or do I have to get a PhD in Computer Programming to connect wirelessly to my router?

BTW screensavers should be banned, like CFCs, as they are just a total waste of the world’s resources. Screens should turn off (not just go blank!) BY DEFAULT after 5 minutes of inactivity unless a video or DVD is running.

Ubuntu does and has supported wifi and most linux friendly wifi cards for ages. I suggest you download the ISO, burn it off, and use it as a live disk to test your configuration to see if it works automatically with Ubuntu.

All I can say on wireless is that it’s been supported (at least in a point-and-click fashion) since version 7.10, go download the ISO or ship it… -_^

Ubuntu 7x is great! So 8 should hopefully be another step in the right direction.

My Wifi worked great, detected my wifi dongle right off the mark, all i had to do was give it the WPA2 key and away she went.

  9. zulu

Ubuntu is great! but for it to be a truly out of the box OS needs a lot of work on drivers install….still having problems with my sound :(

I love Linux, I just wish I could get it to work consistently across all systems.
I can’t very well show people how cool it is on their system if it takes me half an hour, three different forums, and one of three strangely named graphics card drivers, just to get the damn screen resolution to change.
And don’t get me started on Broadcom, Sometimes I am afraid to boot Linux on a system just because of the time constraints of getting it to listen to me.

  11. Why the hell would anybody want to run such a pain in ass OS like ubuntu? Go for a real linux distribution like Arch! :D
