Hack Attack : Get Windows XP SP3 Through Windows Update
Well If you have read my previous Hack Attack on How you can download Windows Vista SP1 through a Hack and it worked for you then here is another Hack that will allow you to download Windows XP SP3 RC1 directly from Microsoft. Windows XP SP3 will be the final service pack that we will see for the World’s biggest Operating System from Microsoft. SP3 will bring a host of bug fixes and some new features borrowed from Vista.
Well here is how you can download SP3 straight from Microsoft. Follow the instructions carefully and you’ll be running Windows XP SP3 in no time. Grab yourself a cup of Coffee as you do this..
Don’t fret too much, this won’t take much time. I can assure you that..
- Download this file ( WindowsXPSP3Hack.cmd ). Once you have downloaded the file, login as administrator and run the file by double clicking it. Wait for the Confirmation Message on screen.
- The Above file adds a few entries to the Windows Registry that makes Microsoft think that you are a part of the Private beta program.
- Check for new updates on Windows Update. You should now see Windows XP SP3 listed in the available updates.
- Download and install it. Reboot whenever necessary.
Please note this hack is the exact way Microsoft expects its beta testers to try Windows XP SP3 out, so you don’t have to worry too much about Microsoft catching hold of you.
I tried this on Windows XP Machine and this hack worked like a charm. Let me know if this works for you.. If you can’t wait for Microsoft to release SP3 officially then this hack is for you.
Spread the word around, so that many more people can download the 3rd Service Pack.

Tried but it didn’t work AT ALL…
Logged as administrator but once the ‘dos’ windows closes and I check the windows update, there is no Windows XP SP3 listed.

worked great on WinFLP, which I was not expecting at all…

One question: why? What’s in this pack that makes it worth the hassle of installing it, even without the added hassle of tricking MS’s servers into thinking you’re on the Beta programme? New features? Or is it just bug-fixes for bits and pieces of Windows we’re never likely to even notice?

Worked fine here, upgraded from Windows XP SP2. Ran the .cmd and then went to windowsupdate with IE7, clicked ‘custom’ and then picked SP3.

From what I hear the only thing SP3 allows microsoft to do is let them reuse some of their serial numbers because sp1 and 2 were so popular that they ran out of serials. but sp3 should be the exact same with all the same updates as sp1 and 2.

Interesting, but why would you want to download an RC1?
For those of you who are unfamiliar with RC, it’s a Release Candidate, one of several that will be released, so there will be problems with it that still need to be ironed out.

Be sure to backup your data before installing this beta service pack.
Another option is to install SP3 in a Virtual Machine to play around with it before committing to your base system.

For the people saying it didnt work wat you need to do is run regedit and then navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\
then make a new key for XPSP3 then make a new string entry named RCPreview with a value of 1c667073-b87f-4f52-a479-98c85711d869

The hack worked for me. SP3 is mainly bugfixes. Spent 2 minutes on Google. Here is what I found.
From http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/xp_sp3.asp :
Q: What are these new features I keep hearing about?
A: Windows XP Service Pack 3 will not include any major new features, but it will include four minor new features that improve the system’s reliability and security. Contrary to reports, Microsoft has been very up-front about these functional additions for quite some time now.
These new features include:
Network Access Protection compatibility. Announced years ago, this feature allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. This functionality is built into the RTM version of Windows Vista as well.
Product Key-less install option. As with Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.
Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module. A new kernel module that “encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms,” according to Microsoft.
“Black hole” router detection algorithm. XP gains the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets. This, too, is a feature of Windows Vista.
And that’s about it. Nothing dramatic, as promised.
Q: That’s it? Is there anything else?
Nothing else new. There are updated applications, which shipped long ago as separate downloads, like Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Media Player 11. And there are even some features that have been removed, like the taskbar-based Address Bar option.
From http://neosmart.net/blog/2007/windows-xp-sp3-beta-build-3205-released-analysis-included/
* New Windows Product Activation model: no need to enter product key during setup. Thank God for that!
* Network Access Protection modules and policies have been brought to XP after being one of the more-well-received features in Windows Vista. You can read more about NAP here.
* New Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module – the Windows XP SP3 kernel now includes an entire module that provides easy access to multiple cryptographic algorithms and is available for use in kernel-mode drivers and services.
* New “Black Hole Router” detection – Windows XP SP3 can detect and protect against rogue routers that are discarding data.
Windows XP SP3 is compatible with all versions of Windows x86, included Embedded, Fundamentals, Start, Professional, Media Center, and Home Editions.
Windows XP SP3 now contains 1,073 patches/hotfixes, not including those in previous service packs. Of the 1,073 included updates, 114 are for security-related issues. The remainder are updates to performance & reliability, bugfixes, improvements to kernel-mode driver modules, and many BSOD fixes.

Honestly, I would wait – there are several unresolved issues with this RC, including the failure to install on some machines.
Some installs of XP are missing .NIS files required to apply service packs. SP3 will fail to install if they are missing (some normal patches fail as well). This is due to previous patches removing them, various language packs installing or removing them, or the version of XP is not EN-AU, EN-UK, EN-US, EN-CA etc for the RC. I’ve run into this issue on Win2k Pro, XP and Win2k3.
There are other issues as well – if your patch installer and Windows Update Installer logs and cache have been cleared by a cleaning program like CCleaner or similar function removed via nLite or XPLite,
the service pack will fail to install. It point blank will not install until you reinstall Windows and update it. This is caused because those programs delete the local patch catalogs, etc that the service pack installer reads to know what patches you have previously applied, etc.
Then there are the various hang issues and whatnot that plagued SP2 (guess what folks – still here for SP3!).
Another issue – when it comes to the final release, uninstalling the RC1 so you can install the final release will more than likely not be possible unless you created a system image before the installation of the service pack. System Restore doesn’t cut the mustard folks.
RC1 is the first step out of Alpha Testing – you really, really don’t want to install it unless you are willing to sacrifice your current install of Windows.
As for the person who commented on switching to Vista: I’d rather install WinME. At least that wouldn’t be spying on everything I did on my computer and reporting it back to Microsoft and their “approved 3rd party business associates, affiliates and other organizations.” Vista does not “rock”. It’s not the “future”. It’s a steaming pile of FAILURE.

JASON: The WGA update has to be installed, then run update once more, and SP3 will install normally.
I’ve heard (via slashdot) that users are gaining 10% benchmark gains when running the Office Suite, among other things.
And numerous BSOD fixes sounds awesome to me, I get to deal with bluescreens all day long at work.

@ Kevin:
Most of those have already been released and you probably already have them installed. What’s the point in getting this any earlier? It’s a beta. It means it can kill your system dead.

For those who have found nothing when running the updater… run the .cmd, run the updater, on the left choose “change settings” and select beta updates.
Restart XP, log in as an Admin. Run the updater, choose custom, you’ll probably see the validation tool as your only available download. Download the tool and let it install successfully then shut down the browser. (Possibly restart XP, don’t remember this exact step) Run the updater and you should then see more options on the left. Choose “select by product”, “Windows XP” and voilla, there it is. That’s pretty much what I can recall on how I did it and currently installing the 75MB patch on my legit XP SP2 Home lapbox.
Hope that helps someone…

It didnt work at first, and then after i installed framework 3, re-ran windows update, it worked just fine.
so, i guess make sure you are already patched up to date, and it should work.
and, i would agree with the random .cmd running… i would change this to a howto, and just have people copy and past the commands into their cmd prompt.. you will end up having all these horrible cmd scripts flying around with people thinking they are sp3 hacks or something.
thanks!

Excuse other post hit enter too early.
The software patch doesn’t have the actual download but, it does have information about the download. The patch itself doesn’t contain anything significant and will not change XP too much. Also it’s only a Beta release.
Read a post on Neowin which states this:
On top of these new features, XP SP3 Beta Build 3205 also comes with an overhauled product activation process. Essentially, XP SP3 will no longer require users to introduce a product key during the setup process of the operating system. Instead the installation experience will be similar to what Windows Vista has to offer, permitting users to deploy the operating system and test-drive the product throughout the Initial Grace period. In addition, XP SP3 will also feature a redesigned Security Options control panel, with extra information associated with the settings offered to users. The final service pack for XP, currently planned by mid 2008, after the release of Windows Vista SP1, will also deliver enhanced security for Administrator and Service policy entries.
Will it deliver the same kind of problems that Vista has? And no mention of DRM!

To make the registry change using a .reg-file you could cut the following
text between “- – -” into a .reg-file and double-click on the file to enter the info into the registry.

I am running a HP Pavilion A1520 N computer with 3Gigs of RAM an AVI X 1300 graphics card and XP MCE 2005 with SP2 installed.
Last week I downloaded XP SP3 from Microsoft’s site and installed it.
When I rebooted my computer it kept recycling from the boot up screen(info about drives, shadowed RAM etc), then the XP boot up screen andfinally back to the boot up info screen( over and over)
I was able to get into the safe mode and try to recover from a restore
point, but it was not able to restore the computer to a the Pre SP3
install.
I used ADD/REMOVE program and uninstalled SP3, but the problem still existed. Not able to get Windows to boot normally
The only way was able to get things back to normal was to reinstall
the OS from my recovery partition.
I tried to install SP 3 again with a fresh install of the OS and the
same thing happened.
Any ideas as to what might be going on? I did not have this problem
when I re- installed SP2 this AM from another fresh install of the
OS.

Hey Paul 1952, enter “javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck=’all’)” (no quotes) in the address bar when you get to the Windows update before clicking express or custom to stop it from checking for a valid Windows.

Not tried it yet, but the .cmd file looks legitimate…. just left click on the link to read the contents of the file. once you are satisfied, proceed to downloading it (Right-click, Save-as) and then run it

I got it working on my laptop. I had a load of trouble with my laptop before hand due to running Reason 4 Beta tests. The debug program really slowed my machine down even after I had uninstalled it.
Since installing this service pack, my machine has speeded up. I was a bit worried about the install, because it took 9 hours to install and a couple of errors came up concerning Run.dll. It also had trouble closeing a couple of processes when it was time to reboot.

Installed it today and it is running fine. XP Home edition SP2 updated to SP3. One thing that sucks is I have Style XP with a Vista taskbar skin and a pop-up said Style XP is not compatible with this version of Windows. I could have sworn I read yesterday in a SP3 related article that Microsoft has a similar “theme” built in or available for download. I forget the name they mentioned but I don’t see anything similar to that when I search the download center on Microsoft.

Install routine worked flawlessly on a home build with WinXP OEM SP2. Biostar mainboard the basis of the contraption. What it does
for me only M$ will know.
Have to point out launching a .cmd string is risky business that’s why
we need SP3 in the first place. Can anyone say ” L-I-N-U-X ” – always
cloak yourself in protection. Be safe Stay safe.

I’m curious, if we have the newest beta version via the hack does that mean we can’t receive normal updates any longer? For example I haven’t seen anything on the windows update site for quite some time. I know that RC2 is available to the public but do we reverse the hack to resume normal windows updates?

Hi, I ended up on this site while trying to find a release date for SP3. I probably won’t end up here again, so don’t bother responding to this message.
Anyway, I feel really sorry for a lot of the people who have posted here. Why were you so eager to install a release candidate of the service pack on your machines. If there are changes to the public release of SP3 (most likely), you probably won’t be able to install them. I wouldn’t be surprised if your xp installation stops updating automatically in the future. Congratulations, you are now running a non-finished version of the operating system and you will probably need to re-install windows.
RC and beta releases are meant for beta testers and system designers, who need to test the compatibility of their company’s applications. These releases are not meant for everyone. When the release is ready for the public, Microsoft will release it to the public.
… You poor souls.

WARNING!!! Be Aware of XP SP3 RTM!!!
Who thinks Microsoft is introducing out of the kindness of their good hearts, a new feature which I’m sure everyone wanted in XP SP3? It’s called “Network Access Protection”. Which Microsoft claims it basically enforces compliance with system health requirements.
What that means is in that NAP can deny network access, until you install Microsoft’s own proprietary draconian stipulations source code which the public isn’t allowed to review. Who wants Windows to tell Microsoft what networks your trying to gain access, unless for national security interests by the NSA, CIA or FBI? As if already having all communications spied upon, wasn’t enough?
This is just another attempt of Microsoft’s strategy to extend, embrace, and then extinguish all other competition. All Microsoft needs is just some excuse to show how their networks are better protected using NAP than those who don’t use NAP. Then, everyone ends up installing their dependent monthly security patches. Haven’t you noticed that it’s become easy for Microsoft like others to run hash checksum values of your files and then take appropriate action, to report back or by claiming the file was a threat. Anyone finding the so called glitch would just hear, that the software which had accidentally corrupted your data/files or had accidentally deleted the offending data/files, was indeed just a bug. Denial from Microsoft will be the first response here, etc…
The point I’m trying to make known, is to remind everyone NOT to become dependent upon Microsoft. Especially, when Microsoft has been convicted, with it’s long history of antitrust violations, for monopolistic business practices. Microsoft has frequently sought to establish proprietary monopolies–and then leverage its dominance into new, adjacent markets. There is no win-win situation here other than for Microsoft’s own short sighted economic benefits.
Let me remind everyone, Microsoft’s strategy has been focused upon entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences to disadvantage its competitors.
Another marketing strategy of Microsoft is a sale of Fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) tactic! In addition, Microsoft creates the environment in which networks of social fanboyism employees and followers utterly devoted with obsessions work actively behind the scenes to orchestrate “independent” praises of their technology. While at the same time are bashing any perceived threats, competition or anything that prevents their dominance. If all the above doesn’t work, Microsoft has a habit of killing off competitors by either buying them or their technologies.
And let’s NOT forget how Bill Gates obtained a cloned design of Gary Kildall’s CP/M, QDOS, from Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer products and MSDOS/IBMDOS was born.
Did you realize 486’s are still usable machines if you’re running something other than Microsoft’s latest software?
And who wants their XP operating system to be turned into Vista DRMed machine by installing Vista like code which could lead to your computer being disabled?
What are the benefits of applying XP SP3? No real new features, only a whole lot of patches… Is this anything to get excited about?

Those who have tried to do this should read the contents of SP3 BEFORE they start fooling around.
I googled “xp sp3″ and the first link was to a Microsoft site that explains the contents of the SP.
It applies mainly to Network Administrators who have to deal with Vista on the same network as XP.
I’d forget about it, even after it becomes public

Does anyone know a patch for sp2 so it will install sp3 update. I have already downloaded it successfully using Windows_Genuine_by_Nawzi which works a treat to overide wga updater online. But I need a patch to qualify the license key check which is contained in the sp3 install/package. This happens once it is downloaded and run. Once it identifies it is not genuine it stops the instilationl. cheers….

The hack to obtain SP3 for XP was developed well in advance of
Microsoft posting it on their website. The author did some justice
by making it available for us peeons and stitching up our OS
vulnerabilities early. It worked well for me and I appreciate the effort and concern. In many cases I support monetarily these
efforts. But I am a happier camper now that I have decided to migrate to various flavours of LINUX.
