The popular social network from Google, Orkut is facing troubles again in Brazil. Orkut is extremely popular here in India and also Brazil. Orkut has been through a lot of legal troubles in the past, but this one in Brazil seems to be the biggest so far. Well the story is quite interesting, here’s what has been happening in Brazil so far.

A Law professor in Sao Paulo, Brazil noticed Pornographic images on Orkut, and some of the pictures went as far as child pornography. The lawyer decided to take screenshots of this, because the images were occurring next to the ads that Google was running on Orkut and released a report on the illegal activities that take place on the Social networking site.

Well things have become even more complicated for Google now, with a Prosecutor in Sao Paulo demanding server logs from Google, so that they can go after the guys who uploaded the images. Well Google has been refusing so far in line with its privacy policy, but they are now facing $100,000 in fine for every single day they refuse to hand over the logs. Added to the misery Google is already facing, its Office in brazil may also be closed down and the head of its Division in Sao Paulo Alexandre Hohagen is facing criminal charges.

Well it remains to be seen what Google can do in this situation. So far they have been standing by their privacy policy.

  • @indyank, I have to agree with you. Google can definitely produce the server logs to the court and get over with the troubles. I wonder what reason Google has for not producing the server logs, I wonder if they have themselves been to something fishy..
  • tough times for google...when someone is misusing the site...i am not sure why google is refusing to share the info. with a court...Is google's privacy policy more important than submitting info. about a criminal to a court...

I am not sure how google can have this kind of privacy policy...ridiculous...
