Update : 1 : There is a newer version of this Hack that you might want to check out. Its much more simpler and can be done by almost everyone. The newer hack also includes Mac OSX 10.5.1 so please check out Hack Attack : Install Leopard On your PC in Just One Step.
![]()
Well its been only a day since the Mac OSX Leopard was released officially by Apple and the hackers have managed to create a patched DVD that everyone like you and me can use to install Leopard on PC’s without having to buy a Mac. Please note the tutorial that I am going to post is still experimental and things might not work the right way simply because it is still early days in hacking Leopard to work on PC’s. Well if you don’t mind your PC getting screwed then go ahead and try out this tutorial.
Make sure you backup all important data before you proceed. Here are the things that you will need before Install Leopard on your PC…
- The Patched DVD Image
- The zip file containing the patch
- One pen drive or USB Flash Drive formatted as FAT32
Well once you have all these you can go ahead and Install Leopard..
Step 1. Getting things ready
- Burn the DVD Image onto a Single Layer DVD-R using a software like Nero.
- Format the USB Flash Drive and the drive label should be “Patcher” without the quotes. Please note it has to be “Patcher” only and nothing else for the patch to work when we apply it later.
- Extract the Zip file and put its contents into the USB Flash Drive.
- Now your USB Drive should contain a folder called “files”, if it doesn’t then check to see where you have gone wrong.
Step 2. Installing Leopard
- Now that you have the Patched DVD with you, you can now install Leopard. Pop in the DVD into the drive and boot into it by pressing F12 at the BIOS Prompt.
- Boot into the DVD and the installer should now load. It take a while though, so be patient.
- Select your Language and make sure you select Customize and you need to deselect all the packages that are displayed.
- Leopard will now install. This can take a while, so go grab yourself a coffee.
- It will ask you to Reboot, so go ahead and Reboot. Before rebooting make sure that USB Flash Drive is connected to the PC.
Step 3. Patching Leopard
- Now that you have got Leopard installed, you need to patch it. Before we do that Boot into the Leopard DVD like the way you did before.
- Wait for the Darwin Bootloader to load. Once it loads up press F8. You should now see a prompt. Type -s and hit enter. The DVD will now load in Verbose mode. Watch for any errors. It should load without a problem because you have already installed Leopard.
- Once the setup is loaded select your Language. Once done you should now be seeing the Welcome Screen. Once there navigate to Utilities-Terminal.
- Once the terminal loads up, you now need to browse to your USB Drive, so follow the steps below, typing it exactly as it appears below in the Terminal.
In the command line type the following as they appear here
cd ..
cd ..
cd Volumes
cd Patcher
cd filesNotice the space between cd and the 2 dots.
- Now its the time to run the patcher to make sure Leopard will work on your PC. Type the following into the Terminal.
./9a581PostPatch.sh
- The Patch should now run. You can answer Yes while removing the ACPUPowerManagement.kext
- After the Script is done, you should now be able to Boot into Leopard after you restart.
Step 4. Congratulations! You’ve done the Impossible!
Well that was it. Please note this has not been extensively tested, so most of your Hardware like Sound, Network may not work. If something goes wrong for you or you want to help us, then please join the discussion over at OSX86Scene. If you noticed I haven’t posted the links to the Torrent that contains the DVD image and the zip. Well I haven’t posted them because I am sure the lawyers over at Apple are going to sue the hell out of me. If you wondering where you can find them, then head over to Demonoid and search for it.
Well here are few screenshots by Mac.nub over at the forums who could get Leopard working on his system.
Some Updates and Clarifications :
- This Hack works on Intel PC’s with atleast SSE3
- You need to format your Leopard Partition to HFS+
- Make Sure you install Leopard on MBR and not GUID or it won’t boot.
- More Patched DVD’s from Uphuck, Netkas is in the works so it would be better if you wait for the polished releases to come out.

Wow. I think it’s so idiotic that OSX isn’t available for PC by design. It is so typical for industry types to try to wish the problem away, and simply ignore a legitimate user demand. If Apple truly wants to compete against M$, why the hell not make a PC version?
The only thing I can think of is a back-door deal that allows Apple to survive regardless of the market’s state while M$ avoids another antitrust lawsuit.
I hope people hack the hell out of it!!!

@YODAMOUSE, I would be very happy if Apple would release a PC version of OS X in the future. But that would have the problem of Mass Adoption and that would lead to problems with the security of OS X. I feel its better being an elite OS.
@OB81, Yeah I know.. The developers over OSX86 are working very hard indeed. Expect more refined releases in the future. This is just the beginning.

In fact,it was more than one day BEFORE release, that many of us run it on a PC.
And Apple will not release a PC version because it can not support it.There is a lot of diferent hardware in PC’s and MacOS is not ready for that. They only have drivers for few devices, parts.
Supporting lots of hardware will shatter the “well known stability” of MacOS.

True. Apple will never release a PC version of OS X. The whole point of Apple and OS X is its stability. This is possible because Apple knows what it puts on their machines inside out.

apple does not offer a PC version of OS X for very obvious reasons — they make their money off hardware, not software.
if they give you their operating system.. they only make a measly $129 off the people who actually pay for it instead of steal it.
instead, they make several thousand off people to buy macs.

@karthik RE: the problem of Mass Adoption
So are you implying that OS X is secure because of the lower market share than Windows? If so this mindset is entirely off base as this type of thinking would imply that NeXt or BeOS would be even MORE secure than OS X. An operating systems security is NOT tied to its marketshare. HOWEVER attempts to hack it will increase but these attempts will only be successful IF the OS is insecure.
Much like the house in the woods… just because it’s never been broken into because nobody is around makes the door lock better than the one in the city that has a break-in attempt every night
Either OS X is secure or it’s not additional marketshare will NOT make a difference. Just maybe speedup finding the problems.

“I think it’s so idiotic that OSX isn’t available for PC by design”
They can’t afford to support it. Think about the diversity of hardware on PCs. By “locking” their OS to a very specifically chosen subset of the available PC hardware, they don’t have to worry about somebody that just bought a $200 emachine piece of crap where every shortcut available has been taken in the hardware, with one-off chipsets that “sorta” match a published specs, etc.
So, really, it’s not idiotic at all.

@SEAMAN:
That is such total BS. First off, it’s not Apple’s job to support eighty bajillion pieces of hardware. Second, if they released a version of OS X for beige box PCs, (discounting the fact that it would cut into their hardware sales, though as badly as some would think) the wave of adoption that would follow would encourage hardware makers that don’t already provide OS X drivers to do so.
Yes, releasing OS X for beige boxes would cut into Apple hardware sales. But the margins on hardware are crap to begin with, especially compared to the margins on software, and the sales of OS X for beige boxes would more than make up for lost hardware sales.
I fully believe that Apple realizes this, and that they’re going to do it eventually. Why? Because Steve Jobs says they aren’t. Recall that this is the same guy who spent years touting the superiority of PowerPC over x86, and claimed that video support on the iPod wasn’t going to happen.
Apple is not a stupid company; with their market share increasing daily, and their coffers stuffed with cash, they have to know that very, very soon they will have the ability to give Microsoft something very, very big to worry over.

The reason Apple has not yet and will never release a version of OSX for generic PC’s is that they are a hardware company. They are not a software company. They develop OSX only to push their hardware.
They would shoot themselves in the face if they were to sell OSX in a state that could be installed by default on any PC. The average user who wants to run OSX on a regular PC would likely not pay for it anyway. Most home users who actually install their own OS pirate it these days.
The majority of legitimate Windows installs out there were done by an OEM.
Apple stands to lose more than they could gain from selling OSX for regular PC’s.
They are in the game to make money, not satisfy people who currently don’t agree with their business model. If you want to run a stable copy of OSX, you will buy a Mac. Many more people are doing this all the time. This is a profitable situation for Apple.
Why would they kill it?
Oct 28th, 2007
Jon
There are two reasons why there will likely never be a PC release of OS X. One is old, one is new.
First, Apple got burned by depending on third party applications in the very early years of the mac. The result was Windows, and slow or no development of Office for the mac. Microsoft wanted them to make the Mac System for the Intel system, Apple said no, and, well, the rest is history. Whether that institutional memory should have any effect on their decision making now or not, it does.
Second, Apple makes pretty decent profits on hardware. (In fact, they make more profits than Microsoft excluding their monopoly Windows and Office) and is a much smaller company.
If you haven’t seen the news, their formula seems to be working. Their profits are up, their market share, especially among laptops is up, so, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Just from a practical point of view, having to support less hardware makes it easier for the OS to be stable.
Having said that, I’ve run 10.4 on a PC and if it had better drivers, it would have been a great machine.

Security through Obscurity is complete nonsense. If OSX is as secure as we all know it is, the number of people using it should have little to no effect.
The whole windows is insecure because so many use it (and is thus a hacker magnet) argument is just a line windows users/devs give to justify its insecurities.
People of other OS’s should not fall into that line of thinking because it is just a FUD trap.
Oct 28th, 2007

@seaman
Exactly. Apple is a hardware company. They make software only so people will buy their hardware. End result – they won’t ever support OSX on anything else. But i betcha they don’t get too upset about people porting it if they buy a copy first. If it works like crap because of driver issues, but people otherwise like it, they might be inspired to buy a Mac. And that should make Cupertino happy.
Oct 28th, 2007

the reason why apple doesn’t sell a pc version of osx is because it makes it’s money off of hardware sales rather than software sales. if they released leopard for pc, apple would go out of business because people would buy the cheap pc hardware and just put apple’s software on it, rather than buying apple’s expensive computers just to have osx

@YodaMouse
Read up on the history of MS and how they became the dominant OS. In short, they let people pirate Windows and that resulted in a huge, huge market share slice. Apple is very smart in this area and are following the same tactic. They dont officially support OSX on x86, but they don’t make it hard to install on x86 either, thereby gaining a foothold in the PC world for free. If they released a commercial version of OSX for PCs at this stage, they’d have to compete with MS…and no one that has competed with MS for the PC desktop has survived. Apple is just taking the intelligent road to desktop dominance.

In fact, if Windows only had to run on 7 or 8 different machines, all with fixed known base configurations, expandable only by USB or 1394, it would probably be a lot more stable than it is.
Mac OS X is already a lot less stable on Mac Pros for the very reason that the number of possible system configurations is much greater, since you can get into the machine and change things, unlike with any other model of Mac.

Yodamouse, just becuase people want something of Apple doesnt mean they are obliged to provide it.
And Apple arent competing with Microsoft, they are doing their own thing in the same market as Dell, HP, IBM AND Microsoft.
Maybe one day OS X will be supported on PCs but at that time, Apple will have to be the biggest company in computer hardware AND software to make it work like it does now for all its customers.
Oct 28th, 2007
DAN
If Apple would do it themself and allow a version to run on PC, this would be a serious treat to MS. Not to forget a major money cow…. But I guess they still don’t get it and are too greedy so they want the software and hardware sale. History has prooven that software pays more than hardware.

Also, keep in mind, Apple makes most of its money from selling hardware (2k-5k) not software ($129) so it’s not in their best interest to make this OS available for PCs–while it would create more “mind share”, it wouldn’t necessarily move more Apple hardware (and may actually decrease their hardware sales–anyone remember the shortlived Apple clones?).
Oct 28th, 2007
shen
“And Apple will not release a PC version because it can not support it.”
no, Apple will not release a PC version because they are a hardware company, the software is made to sell the hardware. if they released a PC version they would have to up the price enough to make up the difference of not selling the hardware.
in short, there is no PC version because it would ruin the company.
stability is not the issue. Linux is also incredibly stable and also has a driver shortage. The Mac OS doesn’t have to be ready for different hardware, the hardware makers have to stop using windows poor design as a crutch for their shoddy drivers.
please, if you know nothing about OS design, don’t tell us about it.

Why anyone would want to do this is completely beyond me. Sure, it’s illegal… but that’s not why I don’t get it.
Why doesn’t Apple release a version for PCs… hmmm. It could be that they figure people will pirate it like Windows (surely, why not? If you do what this article suggests, since it’s already illegal, why would you buy Leopard to do this?). Could be an inability to support more than 3-4% of the “PC userbase” (customer service/tech support). Could be they make all their money on selling overpriced crap? Could be they can lack support for a shit ton of hardware, since they only need drivers for hardware they sell. But ultimately it seems it would make it super-duper-uncool to those nazi-like Mac-fanatics.
Oh, another one, they realize that selling an OS seperate from the machine is fucking stupid! Historically retail OS boxes don’t sell well, OEMs that come with a machine is where they’d make money. But then they’d have to let other PC makers put OSX on their machines. But that would again make Macs super-duper-uncool to the nazi-like mac-fanatics.
Tangents anyone? Sure!
What really makes Bill cream his pants is all the Mac users that pretty much exclusively use the MS Office suite… except they do it on a Mac. Oh sure, there’s iTunes! Maybe they even use Safari if they’re a few bits short of a byte.
But alas, what do I see Mac users running? Internet Explorer! Outlook, Excel, Word…. And these are people who prefer using Macs strongly over a PC. I just don’t get it. But I still consider these types of users a few bits short of a byte.
I think the biggest preference comes from the short-cuts people become familar with. Then the niche group of Audio/Visual users that haven’t realized PCs can do anything A/V a Mac has been able to do for well over a decade.
I need to get me one of those Mac mice with the ball instead of wheel. Those are nice. Too bad it costs over $50 for a damn mouse. And it’ll probably explode when I attach it to my Windows 2000 machine. Anyone got unlock software for Mac mice? j/k

More importantly, Apple wants to control the complete experience of its customers end-to-end. They place a huge emphasis on interoperability within their entire product line. If they were to license OSX, then they’d lose that control, which is arguably the greatest reason that OSX works so well.
And they have plenty of drivers — thank you open source. They’re better supported, and are far more stable than the useless proprietary crap that Windows makes you put up with.

So, whats the general compatibility required to getting a PC system running on OSX leopard? a very intel based system? or do hackers tend to work on other drivers (realtek, etc?) or is it just best to go with a very intel based board (audio, NIC, etc) and just be done with it?

Oh get over yourselves.

the main problem with officially releasing OS X for pc market, is they would have to come up with a million drivers for all the crappy Gateways, Emachines, or whatever other manufacturer uses substandard parts, for the last 10 years, to please people, people who believe their 8 year old computer is still top of the line.
think of all the driver complains windows has, i think it would translate to OSX on pc toooooooooo….. just my thought.

The reason that Apple isn’t going to release a generic x86 OS X (at least, any time soon) is drivers. They know, and include in the installation, the drivers required for ALL Apple hardware. Imagine all of sudden having to support the bizarre range of things people have inside their Windows boxes. You’d have Window fanboys lining up to talk about how unstable the Mac OS is, compared to Windows…which has never had, you know driver issues. Windows would be rock-solid stable too if Microsoft made their own computers.

“Wow. I think it’s so idiotic that OSX isn’t available for PC by design”
That’s just it. With the exception of how they boot, a Mac is just an Apple branded PC. The important hardware is the same. The whole Mac vs. PC dichotomy is artificial. Apple makes their money by building a great OS and tying it to their boutique hardware. If you want the OS, you have to buy a Mac (in theory). The main problem with that is that people like the OS but not everyone wants to buy a premium case and mobile parts. Also, with the smaller hardware base, there are only legit drivers for those parts that are used in Apple computers. If someone wants to get another piece of hardware working, they would have to write a driver or a wrapper to make their hardware work under OSX. Depending on what parts are in your non-Apple PC, you will have better or worse luck getting devices to work. Since Windows is designed to run on a large hardware base, there are many more Windows drivers available. One problem with this is that having a larger hardware base means thousands of possible configurations and higher chance of instability is the price for your hardware freedom.

Apple doesn’t release a PC version because they can’t support it. They don’t release a PC version because if they did, it could be the end to their laptop and desktop lines. PC vendors would be quick to develop drivers (as they were with Vista) for their products, thus returning stability to the OS. Let us not forget that Apple frequently releases buggy models that are victims to frequent system crashes (I know, I have one). The only way Apple laptop and desktops would be able to survive is to quit overcharging consumers and slash prices in order to compete with other hardware manufacturers.

I disagree with any statement saying Apple is a “Hardware” company. Apple is a technology company. All hardware requires software to be functional and Apples software is the reason people buy Apple hardware. Nobody would buy a Mac if it were not for the top notch software products they produce.. It’s nonsense to say that Apple is a hardware company because in the computer / electronics business sector hardware is nothing but an iBrick without software. So IMHO Apple is just as much a software company, just one that wants to be in control of the devices that run it’s software.

ok, so i’ve seen a bunch of you people saying things like ” the only way Apple can ever hope to compete with Microsoft…” but here’s the funny thing dumbasses… When last I checked Apple is worth over 4 times Microsoft. Microsoft (MSFT) closed at $35.03/share today (28 Oct), while Apple (AAPL) closed at $184.70/share. Granted, the iPhone has significantly helped Apple. That point made…
The two company’s aren’t even in truly in competition (Zune and iPod aside). Microsoft creates primarily office and os software. Apple creates computers and the operating system that runs their hardware it would be like saying Coca Cola is better than the company that provides most of the sugar syrup to the soft drink industry.

Stop saying that Apple is a hardware company and not a software company. It’s just asinine to say that. Apple is above all things a software company. Their BUSINESS MODEL, however, is to sell the hardware that runs their software. They believe that anyone who is truly passionate about building software has to build their own hardware too.

Don’t talk about the stock market unless you know what your talking about. The share price of a given company’s stock cannot be directly compared to the price of another company’s. Take the share price and multiply it by the total number of shares and you’ll see your mistake.

I believe that Apple is a technology company and not a company that exclusively sells hardware or software. As far as i know Steve Jobs prefers to have his software run on trusted hardware manufactured by Apple itself.
The only reason you will see Mac OS coming on to PC will be when Apple will be compelled to do so, like when it happened when Safari and iTunes came to windows.

Apple is indeed a hardware company and a software company and an entertainment company. Maybe soon to be a label/publisher.
An Apple computer will run 10.5 and Win *. Sweet!!
I still use my PC to convert audio and video to a format that will work on my Apple computer and Nano.
I have as many computers as I want to have. Maybe some night I will open a bottle of Pinot Noir, Roll a fatty and see if I can boot Leopard on a Dell or something else that would be cool.
This whole horses are better than trucks thing really depends if you are on pavement or on grass. I prefer to have both.
Sometimes it is fun to drive the truck into a little bit of dirt.
Sometimes it is fun to ride the horse into town.
You should be careful about pledging your loyalty to anything. Especially if that thing has stockholders and a marketing department.
Things do change. The revolution will end yet again we will still have choices I hope.
I really never liked Linux but I am happy that it still is an option.
If the truck (MS) and the horse (Apple) both decide they don’t want to play someday then walking (Linux) will absolutely still be an option.
It may hurt like hell for a while but won’t sitting in front of a truck or behind a horse hurt worse?
….I do own an Intel Apple and a AMD PC. My horse has a truck in it?
I use Linux for cracking wep.
I did not buy anything from the open source community. If I was to pay money for software they would be the first to know.
Trust nothing. Try everything. Be creative and have fun. When you are dead you will be visited as often as you visit your dead. You will be missed as many minutes per day as you miss your lost.
Change things around. Try every new way that you want. These operating systems did not come out of a vacuum. Mutation, imitation and evolution are the best things that ever happened to you or them.
Just one opinion. Get a tattoo if you are really sure.

Thanks for the guide. However, there is some essential info missing: what chipsets (southbridge) are supported? Which video cards?? The forums for installing 10.4 are full of examples of motherboards and video cards that won’t work.
For ex: will Leopard boot on a mobo with an Intel 965 chipset ????

The point of running a Mac is to have an operating system that works wonderfully with the Apple hardware. By installing this on a PC, you’re just one step closer to running a crash-prone operating system like Windows…well, ok, you’re still ALOT more secure since you have a UNIX base and a microkernel, but that’s another forum thread

@ about 20 or so different people who said something to the effect of: “Apple is a hardware company; if they sell OSX for PCs then it’ll ruin the company”:
What?
Have you ever heard of something called… an iPod? an iPhone? a little thing called Final Cut Pro? or Logic Studio? Hmm. I mean, really, it’s not cheaper to make an iPod than a computer… and they don’t sell 100X more of these products than they do computers… and they don’t make a killing off of every iPhone sold AND the actual 2-year agreement…. [sarcasm]
Selling OSX for use on PCs would not ruin the company. Quite to the contrary.
And, by the way… Apple is a hardware company selling overpriced crap? I seem to recall two programs that were industry standards in their respective fields [Avid, Pro Tools], and Apple made SOFTWARE that was so full-featured and ridiculously low priced compared to those two programs that it FORCED Avid and Pro Tools to DRASTICALLY lower their prices.
P.S.~ According to the Evil Steve Jobs, Apple is a software company. [See D5: All Things Digital 2007]

Is Apple a hardware company or a software company?
The answer is : Both.
And Apple doesn’t only sell Macs and its OS but don’t forget they make money through iTunes Music Store too. Moreover, Apple has just launched its WiFi Music Store. What a business.
Imagine how much money they made with these:
iPod/iPhone + iTunes = $$$$
MacBook/iMac/MacPro + OS + .Mac + iWork = $$$$$$$
* Though the .Mac and iWork are just optional products, Apple still made money through them*
Quicktime Pro = $$
Airport Extreme Base Station = $$
In a nutshell, Apple is a hardware/software/music/accessories company.
Done!!

I can’t agree more. I believe that Apple Inc. is not a company that sells OS X to the masses. It designs and produces it’s own type of computer and should have the right to retain it’s operating system within this circle.
Apple is a very different company compared to Microsoft which produces operating systems for other computer companies to install in their own machines.
Many still do strike up the common topic of Apple competing with Microsoft even when they are totally different types of companies–alike comparing an apple with an orange. But anyhow, I’m honestly against OS X (PC). It’s like an oxymoron.
But anyway, I respect the speed of the hackers in churning out this crack. What is done is done (:

It’s sad to hear and see that so many of you PC users are envious of the obviously more stable, secured and superior Mac OS X but do not have the guts to admit it.
In short, Apple is for the elite, PC is for the rest full stop. So stop stooping so low as hacking a Mac OS to run on PC. Get a Mac.

Part of the legendary stability and security of OS X comes from limiting the support of hardware to a very constrained set. All drivers are written by Apple, maintaining control of the security of the code.
Supporting the plethora of devices that Windows supports, creates a code, test, and management nightmare. That, along with the poorly architected OS architecture, the registry, DLLs, and the myriad of other problems in Windows, creates the mess that is Windows.
With almost every file format that a Microsoft application produces being proprietary (vs. almost every file on Apple being open standards), Windows is a far more closed environment than OS X. Hardware is a commodity – the cost comes from the total costs of managing the environment over the lifespan.
I hope that Apple NEVER comes out on generic PC hardware – if it does, my IT costs for OS X are going to be on the par with Windows, which means a 400% increase in IT budget requirements.

Apple neither a hardware nor a software company. Its both: they make complete solutions for the needs and creativity of their customers. They design the hardware, they write the OS and they also make quite a few applications that fulfills most computing needs. Some cone with every mac, like iLife, while others are cheap office alternatives like iWork or proffesional apps like Final Cut Pro.
Saying apple is a hardware company and not a software one is overly simplistic. In short, Apple uses the hardware profit in order to be creative in their research+development division.

The reason Microsoft makes money is this: Ninety percent of your “average” computer user will walk into a Big Box store, pick the medium-priced, pretty Black/Blue/Grey/Neon-green-with-crazy-tubes-of-color-and-100-fans box that says it will “Play DVDS, Share photos with friends and family, burn said photos to disk. Plus, you can listen to music!” and never ever ever think of the alternative. Most people who just listen to Music, browse the web, share photos, will never ever get a bad MS experience if they have a good AV and Spyware/Adware blocks, which COME with PCs nowadays, anyhow.
Macs are generally for a dedicated user. Are they good at all those things that PCs can do? Absolutely. Sometimes better. Hell, mostly better. But for some people, they are also proibitively expensive. I can’t afford one. I sure as hell want one. But I can go to Dell right now, pick up a $1000 dollar computer with pretty impressive specs, and walk out the door satisfied. Okay, yeah, there’s the Mini Mac. But, still, over a grand with a nice display and peripherals. Even AT a grand, the Dell still has a leg up.
Apple makes more money because they sell EXCLUSIVE, EXPENSIVE products. Plus, who really buys any other DAP? The iPod owns that particular scene. There IS no competition. The SHUFFLE sells a crapton of units, and it’s a very un-user friendly product. I have absolutely NO NEED for an iPod Touch. At all. I have well over 80 gigs of music, and probably 10 times that in movies. 16 gigs ain’t gonna cut it. But I still want one. Oh so badly.
Don’t really know my argument. I do know that MS put out a killer gaming system. Maybe the most fully realized gaming experience, ever. Can’t fault them for that…

>But the margins on hardware are crap to begin with, especially compared to the margins on software, and the sales of OS X for beige boxes would more than make up for lost hardware sales.
not for apple – they usually sell their hardware for twice the price they buy it for from the manufacturers like Quanta etc. Double the win by just adding “some special software” that turns beige box into a mac – the point is the synergetic combination of hard- and software. And that’s why Apple will never ever release an OS X for the crowds. They already did that in the past and they learned: licensing MacOS to thirds is just a crappy idea.

Why won’t Apple sell OS X to 3rd party vendors or directly to PC owners? Many argue that it is because Apple makes its money from hardware but that’s not it at all. Microsoft has proven that the real money is in software. So why does Apple continue to refuse? Simple, they learned something else from Microsoft.
The PC world is an anarchy. Anyone can make a motherboard, a video card, a nic, a hard drive interface or a power supply. As long as the device meets the uniform standards it should work. But it isn’t quite as simple as all that. Microsoft engineers are forced to keep a huge lab of PCs so that they can endlessly test Windows against the myriad of combinations that are possible in the PC world. A sad truth little known, Windows has lines and lines of code that get run only in the presence of specific devices so that Windows won’t crash when a poorly specced but popular device is installed. Or when two otherwise ok devices are installed in the same computer.
Apple avoids this by controlling the design process. While PC fanboys and cheapskates complain that Apple is thwarting their desires, Apple’s supposedly closed and proprietary system allows Mac owners a far better user experience – hardware and software. And that is why we Mac fanboys are willing to pay a premium. Because we know the value of things, not just the price.

Here is a hint… before calling people “dumbasses” you may want to ensure that you aren’t a dumb ass yourself.
The share price for a given stock is not what determines which company is “worth more.” Microsoft’s share price is lower than Apple’s, but Apple has less shares outstanding.
It is called market capitalization. I’m sure you can read about it on Wikipedia.
Just so you know, Microsoft’s market cap is currently 329.34B (according to Google Finance) while Apple’s market cap is at 161.12B. Looks like Microsoft is twice as good as Apple right?
Unfortunantly there is more than just market cap to think about when analyzing the financial situation of companies, and things are not so simple.

Ive spent 9 years working as a PC/Network tech and then later as a .NET programmer. I quit the field about 3 years ago and have been learning audio engineering. I resisted the switch to a mac because I thought they were so much more expensive and then I would have to buy a proTools rig, etc etc. Why spend all that money when I could do it with other software on a PC?
I found that a PC (and the software for it) just couldnt cut it. I thought it was the software and tried ProTools for PC. Couldnt get it to run right or record anything reliably.
I saved some money and I just made the switch and bought a Mac Pro about a month ago.
Ive never been happier. Runs stable, secure, doesnt crash, and doesnt bother me. PT runs beautifully. It does what I tell it to without 3 confirm & warning dialogs. Money well spent.
So i wondered if it’s really more expensive. I spent about 3800 on my mac pro setup. A similarly spec’d rig (dual 2.66, 2 GB ram, 250GB system drive 500GB storage, 23 HD display) is nearly $500 more through Dell.
screw dlls & the registry.

To say that Apple is a Hardware company, and not a software company, is pure ignorance. Apple is succesfull because they believe in building turnkey system with tight integration between hardware and software. Apple spends an equal amount of their mindhsare on their software as they do on their hardware. They are inseparable.
It would be more accurate to say that Apple is a company focussed on what the consumer wants/needs.

Oct 29th, 2007

You can expect that Apple will make attempts to prevent these kinds of hacks for the simple reason that Apple is a HARDWARE company, not a software company. All of Apple’s software exists for the sole reason of selling hardware. That includes the pro apps like FinalCut, Shake, Motion and Logic, even though they are relatively expensive in their own right.
Very few people (whether they be Apple or Microsoft fanboys) understand this, but it’s a simple fact which explains a lot of Apple’s ’strange’ behavior in the software market: They’re not in the software market! They have a long history of abandoning software suddenly and without explanation. (Hypercard anyone?)
Every time Apple has tried to make a serious go of it in the software market, they screwed up.
So why would Apple want to sell OSX for generic PCs? It’s just not their market. Apple’s clone license policy in the mid 1990s nearly scuppered the company. Steve Jobs tried opening up the hardware monopoly (and failed miserably) with NeXT, he’s not going to make the same mistake again with OSX.
Even Safari and iTunes for Windows exist primarily to sell iPods. Microsoft is NOT in head-to-head competition with Apple except with the Zune.
Microsoft is in fact attempting a similar model with Zune and XBox. It’s working well with the XBox…

c’mon guys, the reason there is no pc for the mac…..remember when they tried clones with the macintosh? didnt work. first thing jobs did was go back to basics. remember, apple is mainly in the hardware business. the software is dandy and extensive. however, if they make leopard work on a pc, its a whole can of whoop ass trying to keep up with the slough of hardware manufacturers that make crappy gear. they would be consumed alive trying to support it. their hardware is closed. so it works. period.

You know why people don’t buy Apples? PRICE.
You can’t get a Macbook for less than $1100. People talk about crap PCs, but who spends that much for a PC notebook? I sure as hell don’t, my HP book cost me $900 and that was high-end, and the thing is dynamite so far despite my running Vista.
A more than adequate Acer notebook costs about $500. Maybe if Apple could figure out how to enter the same price range as PC’s they’d get a little more love.
Oct 29th, 2007
Dana
There are two reasons why Apple won’t put out a PC version of Leopard: 1.) the issue of quality control; 2.) if they did, Microsoft would immediately pull the plug on Office for the Mac, and that would kill the Mac’s viability in the corporate, governmental, and educational markets (just at the time when Apple’s market share is beginning to expand). iLife, Apple’s office suite, may be satisfactory for individual users, but it’s light years away from Office. There’s also the problem that OSX may lack a wide range of drivers for cards and peripherals which PC users take for granted. Then too, at the moment Apple has a great public image, but if people started running OSX on PC’s and things didn’t work out well, they’d blame Apple, and Apple simply doesn’t need the grief.

Three “easy” steps? Funny, I count 18 and easy doesn’t seemt to be the correct adjective.
Anyone who thinks it’s easy to run an app off a thumbdrive that MUST be named correctly is missing the whole point behind the philosophy of the Mac. Namely, that using a computer doesn’t have to be complicated if the engineers are doing their jobs right. So, if you think 18 steps are “easy” why are you bothering with Mac OS X? Upgrade to an OS that suits your expectations: Vista.
But if you’d like to use a computer that doesn’t fight you at every turn, get a Mac. That’s right, a Mac. Why? Because a computer is more than an OS and Macs are made by engineers who do their job well.

Apple can’t afford to sell OS X against Windows.
It’s really easy to prove it for yourself. Look at AAPL financial statements. See how much they make on hardware. Note that it’s around 30% and that most of their sales are in the $1000 – 1500 range with some significant numbers above $2000. On the base model MacBook Pro they make $600.
Now look at what HP pays MS for a copy of Windows. It’s something like $50. Notice that 50 goes into 600 twelve times. That means that for Apple to simply break even on the loss of MacBook Pro revenue they’d have to sell 12 times as many copies of OS X. Given that they already have close to 20% of the market for >$2000 laptops, they’d not only have to put OS X on every single one sold by every manufacturer, they’d also have to grow the market to double its present size.
Having to support so many hardware configurations would easily triple the cost of making OS X, thus forcing roughly another doubling of sales to make up for it. Of course they’d have to implement some drastic DRM to slow down piracy which would further drive up costs and force even more sales. After all that consider what Microsoft would do in retaliation.
So in exchange for the current MacBook Pro sales Apple might need to sell 50-100 times as many copies of OS X into the current high end laptop market just to break even. What part of impossible don’t you understand?

This is pretty interesting allthough, I do have a MacBook and I love it. I have Tiger and have ordered Leopard (which is coming this week maybe).
How do you find it working with different hardware setups, especially with different graphics cards than those shipped with current Mac-models? What I have read, it seems that you can’t put e.g. GeForce 8800GTX to a Mac Pro on the place of the lame GeForce 7300GT because Tiger does not support the 8800GTX (if you have Ubuntu installed on the same Mac, you can use the GF8800GTX on Ubuntu, but MacOSX don’t boot until you change the lame graphics card back).
Therefore the question is that does the Leopard support better cards than those sucking default card on Mac Pros? One of the reasons why I have only a Mac laptop is that it makes no sense to buy a lower spec (supposed to be more capable) Mac than our living room PC (which has GeForce 8800GTX 768 MB) which is running Ubuntu just, to be able to run OSX. If the Leopard works with this card, then this gets a lot more interesting (of course the PC is not that stylish and fun as Mac, but anyhow, I could then maybe give a try for this hack just for fun, at least I could then verify if I could get someday a Mac Pro with a proper graphics card on it or is the driver support as bad in Leopard as it is on Tiger).
Oct 29th, 2007
Clearer
1) PC != x86
2) PC != Windows
The “PC” platform is very much so supported by the Mac OS X operating system, in all of the senses that it has been proposed to me.
First of all a PC is just a computer which is not a mainframe (which is really an outdated concept). Second of all that means that any processor architecture can be a PC — this include PPC, Motorola, ARM and x86.
This also means that you don’t need Windows, or any other operating system, to claim to have a PC. In fact, if you have any computer that’s not a mainframe, you can say you have a PC.
Mac OS X runs on x86 — in fact I doubt (I don’t know) that you can get 10.5 for anything but x86.

When you grow up and get older, you may learn at some time that share price is not the value of a company. What matters is the actual market cap. The way this is figured out is by multiplying the share price by the number of actual share. If microsoft wanted a higher share price, all they’d have to do is a reverse split of shares. Look again, microsoft’s market cap is more than double apples, meaning they’re “worth” more than double apple.

Hi!
In step 1 it said I need to format a usb driver to FAT32 and name it Patcher, I guess PATCHER and patcher won’t work, it must b Patcher right?
But I got a problem, no matter how I tried to rename it, format it again and name it Patcher, it helps me to rename it to PATCHER! all CAPS! why is that? Could somebody please help me out?
Thanks

Why put OSX in a PC?
Isn’t that like buying a Corolla just so you could put a Porsche engine in it?
Wouldn’t it be smarter just to buy a Porsche?

many people like me will buy a copy of leopard and then use the hack or a torrent version. so we will actually own a license to use the osx. apple is just stupid about releasing the osx to the public — hardware issues aside. apple needs to figure out a model to be as profitable w/o relying on sales of overpriced computer hardware. if apple would sell osx to the public, w/in 6 mos, most people would be running dual or multi boot pc’s w/at least osx and some version of windows (maybe 2 versions for those of us who want to keep our xp) and maybe linux too. some people w/newer cpus would be running simultaneous boot systems. apple is just holding us back — that’s all.

Windows people:
Stay windows people. We don’t want you. In my experience most (not all) PC types are short sighted and judgmental “Mac sucks blah blah” bigots who have never even used a Mac since grade school.
Most Mac people have used both, are subjected to windows every day at work and know first hand which is better.
At my work, JH (the boss man) is slowly coming around to the fact that the Macs we use just seem to work, while the PCs work only if we constantly fight off viruses and bugs and accept the fact that tech help needs to be called every three days (and we only have 5 PCs). He got Dull PCs because he was advised to by his IT brother in law. Those computers are absolute garbage, and by the time we took delivery of the last one there was an audible groan in the office when they saw the box. John gave it the username ‘POS’.
He’s still paying for them all and they’re already out of date.
Meanwhile I have a startup business and I don’t want anything Micros**t in my company. PCs have cost JH dearly, but hey, they were ‘cheap’.
Cheap, yep. And crap.

Didn’t work for me. After “Loading Darwin/x86″ I get a gray bar at the top of the screen then the message “Property ‘Driver-1891000′ [8] = (data)” repeated a bunch (23) of times then nothing but a blinking cursor. The number after Driver- is different for each instance of the message. I let the system sit for over an hour but still nothing. The Num Lock key is unresponsive. I’m running a P4 2.5 G Hz proccessor and 1 gig of ram on an Asus P4G8X mobo.

List of issues…
I assume nobody’s actually tried to do this.
You can’t fit 6.5GB onto a SINGLE LAYER DVD as stated. How many DVDs will people ruin trying to follow your explicit (and incorrect) instructions?
This likely needs Tiger installed already. Every bit of info on OSx86 implies that it does.
How can we format our partition/extra drive in HFS+ in Windows?

Apple cant be a hardware company.
And it sure is a Software company.
There is no such hing as a factory or plant for Apple hardware. Asustek, the same company that makes Asus motherboards, is responsible for making Macbooks and iMacs.
That being said, Apple is definetely a pure software company.
Cheers!

Hi!
Looks like the Flash Drive, or at least u use an iPod, doesn’t to be formatted to FAT32.
It’s impossible(?) to name the FAT32 driver to Patcher, it will always change to PATCHER for no reason! No matter how hard you try! And I found that formatting the Flash Drive to mac os (journaled) (I forget exactly what’s the name of the file system, just try any other file systems that enables you to use not only the CAPITAL letters is find) will work too! I tired it last night and now I am running Leopard on Hackintosh happily!
Oh by the way I also tried to modify the patch path in the postpatch.sh file, from Patcher to PATCHER of coz, and it won’t work!
Good luck.

With Leopard supporting Bootcamp, the software that allows intel based mac users to install Windows XP or Vista natively is already availible.
Mac hardware is fully supported in the windows operating system when Bootcamp is installed.
This is only making things go the other way, with less support.
Though PC’s are cheaper, Apple has made some of the most powerful machines in the world.
Running Bootcamp, I can play pretty much any high graphics game available for PC. All on an inch thick 2.16 ghz black macbook.
Go buy a mac, it’s more for the money.

Apple is a hardware company like Dell is a hardware company. Both buy the parts from other factories, put the bits together and then add their own case. What Apple has up on Dell though (apart from using the same factory for some things) is the style of the enclosing case, the compact arrangement of the internals, and a rock-solid OS that is designed perfectly to integrate with the hardware.
A Dell is made when you paid someone else to put together a hardware configuration for you.
A Mac is made when you paid someone else to put together a computer for you.

A list of some relevant points:
1) Steve Jobs knows what it is like to sell an OS for IBM derived PCs. His company NeXT sold OpenStep for PCs. I saw the booklet of compatible hardware configurations. It was over 100 pages long. It specified specific combinations of hardware that allowed the PC to be compatible. Otherwise you were on your own. Would Apple want to support a multitude of different hardware configurations if they didn’t have to? Absolutely not. Instead they support a well known set of hardware resulting in an optimized, integrated system of hardware and software. You can’t do that on a PC. Example: Despite Microsoft’s best efforts, plug and pray lives on. Only Macs have reliable plug and play to this day. (And yes, that does include the Mac Pro towers).
2) Mac OS X has no viable malware for two reasons:
(A) From the ground up it has UNIX quality security. Apple do indeed sometimes play catch up to Open BSD and Free BSD security features, but they get there eventually. Only these two UNIX variants have a better record of security than Mac OS X. No, Linux does not.
(B) The Mac hacker community is not malicious. It is deliberately helpful. When a hacker digs for and finds an OS vulnerability, it is common to then create a proof of concept piece of malware than can abuse it. But in the Mac community that is where the story ends. Nothing is released into the wild, at least so far. Even the two master hacker / FUD meisters Kevin Finisterre and IBS (or something like that) who held The Month Of Apple Vulnerabilities never wrote a viable piece of malware.
3) One of the great and stoopid anti-Mac myths is the ’security by obscurity’ nonsense. The fact is that if you add up the 55 old Mac OS malware plus the 9 proof of concept Mac OS X malware, then compare it to the total amount of malware for Windows, you find that there are over 80x more malware on a per user basis for Windows than Mac. What that says to me is that an awful lot of people have it in for Windows, OR Windows is incredibly insecure. The problem most certainly is NOT the lower market share of Mac OS X. (Note that I do consider Vista a quantum leap improvement by Microsoft in attention to security, at long last).
4) Apple have always been an integrated hardware AND software company. That is how they started with the first release of the Apple II and that is how they remain today with the Mac, iPods, iPhone, Apple TV, AirPort Base Station, etc. Most of the peripheral software they write has been for their own hardware, with the exception of QuickTime, iTunes, AppleWorks, FileMaker and a few other odds and ends that also run on Windows. If there is one key word to sum up Apple it is: INTEGRATION. That is one of the engines that makes their products top-of-the-market quality.
5) Apple already tried selling Mac OS 8 for 3rd party hardware. The vendors included Power Computing, Motorola and UMAX. It was a complete failure from Apple’s point of view. First, it lost Apple profit. Second, they lost control of the hardware platform such that many of these 3rd party machines were known for their problems. People keep trying to compare Apple with Microsoft like once could replace the other. No! The two companies are fundamentally different. What we need is another Apple and another Microsoft so we have more competition in the market! As I am ever saying: Competition is the father of innovation.
6) People like to compare computer prices merely by comparing shelf prices. That never worked. Add to that ROI (return on investment) and TCO (total cost of ownership). If you fish around the net with Google to understand these concepts, then take a look at every total price comparison between Windows PCs and Macs, you’ll find that Macs have always been LESS expensive. The ‘Elite Priced Mac’ is a myth. The price comparison studies will tell you why. One reason is again, integration.
I’ll keep my Mac with Apple hardware and integrated Apple software, thanks. I learned computing on DOS and Windows PCs. That’s why I stick with Mac. And when something better comes along, I’ll defect to them as well. ;-Derek

If apple makes all of their money off of hardware only. Then their software must be crap. I’d rather use windows, and if i’m going to use unix, i’m not going to use osx, i’ll use freebsd, which is free, and if i don’t like it then that’s it.

Incredulous
I’d like to respond a few points… But first I’ll qualify it by saying I’m a developer that writes Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac OSX applications/services, have worked doing OS development and I think they are all useful environments with different strong parents.
1) This is an achievement on the part of the people who made the hack. They’re tinkering, they achieved something quite difficult and they want to show the world. To those Mac Zealots who are getting rabid about it, take a chill pill and let these guys have their hobby time – most people who do this probably already own Macs and just like the technical “wow”.
If you’re not a techie (and most Mac users aren’t) then you might not “get it”. It’s not about being a Mac person or a PC person. It’s about being a tinkering techie.
2) Hardware vs Software company. The answer is neither. Apple is what economists call “Vertically Integrated”. That is, they control their own business segments from top to bottom.
They’re a brand based product oriented company and provide everything for a branded product including hardware, software, services, education and support. They sell the “whole widget” and the services that go with it. Apple is a Mac, iPod and iPhone company, not a hardware or software company.
3) The big lie is that Mac OSX is stable or secure at all. Mac OSX and Windows are about as stable and secure as each other when put in the same circumstances.
The Mac simply isn’t put into a lot of those circumstances. Why? The PC actually comes with a lot more capability at lower levels. Microsoft ships a lot more software, hardware and library functionality than Apple does. A lot more developers *use* that functionality on Windows, because there is a lot more user demands for different things.
Most software you see running on the Mac is the same few heavily polished software packages from big engineering houses (Apple itself, Microsoft, Adobe) or custom small end user window dressing (i.e. pretty front ends to a database or web service). This gives Apple engineers a limited path to tighten up to make the OS experience solid.
But having developed software for Macs, I can tell you that they’re no great shakes in stability or security. It’s pretty easy to screw the whole OS or add in back doors. For example, there is a known way to deadlock DNS lookups (even in Leopard) which will stop every program that waits to lookup a server name doing its job.
Operating systems like OSX and Windows are huge pieces of software, they have bugs and security holes galore. Anyone who’s worked on a huge codebase (including me) will tell you it’s always going to have them, because humans have a limited capacity to find them.
That said, the worst cause of PC slowness and stability problems is usually crappy bundled software that comes on PCs like Dells. When an IT department builds and tests a Windows XP image and deploys it on the same PC you buy at home, it runs faster and more stable.

There are a few here you have it! Apple if first and foremost a hardware vendor. The reason that OS X exists is to power there hardware. They are NEVER! going to release a pc version of OS X. Doing such would cause a huge hit in the wallet!

Incredulous you are so smart, thank you for the excellent post. I am a PC user and I get tired of Mac users claiming “it just works” or “why buy a corolla to put a porsche engine in it” (referring to the OSX on a PC). People claim Apple/Mac is a godsend which it is not, people have hacked both Windows and OSX, plenty of people have complained of both. Neither is greater or lesser because they are on 2 different spectrums.
OSX – Smaller userbase, claimed to be solid (well of course it is because it has less people to cater to), less drivers and expandability, a LMAO-firewall attempt on Lep
Windows – Ginormous userbase, hacked serveral times (because its in the hands of every hacker), driver support for 99% of products on the market, a little behind on the GUI, ahead on security and flexibility
The argument “Mac is for media, PC is production” has been phased out, Mac tries to keep up with the outdated versions of Office, PC tries to keep up with Media Center and such.
The argument “Macs are cute, PCs are ugly” have any mac users ever seen an alienware, a falcon northwest, a liquid cooled super computer?
One thing I can say MS has pwned Apple every round…Price. Apple uses its proprietary shaft to get every dime (in most cases thousands) from people for an Intermediate style PC. You can get dual-core PCs for less than $500 these days, add your widescreen, GPU, extra ram and you are around $1000. Which is still not near the base price of $1200 for a Mac.
Microsoft and Apple will always be a debate but clearly the arguments made are becoming too close to ever call a winner.

To macfags telling people to buy a mac: We don’t want to spend more money on hardware just for a better OS
To winfags saying how Mac sucks: Why the fuck are you reading this?
To the people trying to find out how to do this: Wait a while for the hackers to develop a better way to do this. This requires a dedicated PC specifically for Leopard (no dual-booting) and driver support is going to be sketchy at best.

Are you frickin’ retarded? Hacking an OS just to INSTALL on non-Apple hardware is way different than hacking INTO a running OS to do damage (virus, trojan, etc.)
Windows users really are stupid! Still using the same old 1987 arguments to say Macs are crap (too expensive, no software, not secure, only for graphics, etc.). No wonder they all still love their outdated Windows OS’es and MC Hammer pants! Do some research and get the facts before you spout off.
You MS luva’s don’t have to continue to live with the problems you have in Windows but have learned to accept…. there is a better computing life with OS X!

Can you guys please stop with saying “mac sucks, hail windows” or “windows sucks, mac rule”whitout give a good reason why is/isn’t.
Mac (and other UNIX things like Linux ofcourse) IS safer, windows was never made for internet, xhat makes security wasn’t te point. UNIX is made for internet.
So face it: windows ISN’T as safe as any UNIX-system.
Windows is more used (because of a good marketing tactice (or luck) and is was cheaper (I say was, windows vista now isn’t realy cheap)) so it’s supported more.
Me, I think windows quite sucks, because it’s expensive, vista has nothing new (free beryl for linux is even better), is expensive and is one big bug.
If I had the money i would buy a mac and dual boot mac & Ubuntu (linux). Now I use only ubuntu, windows is too useless and it always want to remove my linux, so I just removed it.

Hi there. I would like to ask you something. I’m running XP professional on my laptop, and I have all stuffs to install Leopard on my VAIO (based on your guide). Hi all.
First of all, this is a terrific thing. Period. I am a IT professional, and I manage Windows Networks. I recently got to see Leopard in action on my brother’s Mac (with his 30″ widescreen monitor!). Understand me, I am a Windows guy inside and out, but the Leopard thing had me wanting to put a Mac on my desk at home. I am preparing a fresh Intel PC to build my own MacIntel PC. Will I dump Windows machines? No. Do I think one is better than the other? Depends on what you are doing. But I would like to say this: I find it a bit amusing but mostly quite sad that so much energy and time and emotion is spent by people slamming this OS or that OS, claiming that what they use is the “best”, saying that MACs suck or Windows suck or Apple sucks or Microsoft sucks, screw Bill Gates, etc, etc, etc. Who cares? What difference does it make? We can speculate all day long as to why our brilliant minds think that Apple won’t sell a PC version of Leopard, but guess what? Unless you work for Apple on the top floor, all you are doing is generating hot air and speculation. Instead of all this bashing and chest thumping, why not put your energy into learning more about and using the absolutely amazing array of technology, hardware, software, and operating systems that we have freely available to us. The sky is SO the limit in what we have today, and more importantly what we cannot even imagine yet to come. Put down your picket signs and get on some computing! Stop wasting space in places like this where true computer enthusiasts come for valid help and information, and are forced to sift through all sorts of useless, opinionated, MOSTLY uneducated, biased crap.
I shall now put away my soap box. But not before I give SERIOUS KUDOS to the guys that swiftly made available what i think is a bitchin OS.

So I just wasted a good portion of my life reading all this screaming back and forth of which OS is better or worse, but it honestly depends on what you want to do. Every OS has it’s own quirks and strong points. I think this project is totally awesome. I’d love to do it myself, but I’m running an AMD and there’s little/no support for it. I currently triple-boot Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Ubuntu Linux. I think OS X is great, and I’ve always been a Windows guy until just a few months ago. I can’t afford a Mac, so that’s what makes this so cool, I can’t wait until the support gets better (and I’d even be willing to pay for the legit copy of OS X to patch). For me it’s not about which OS is “the best.” If I want to game or need compatability, I boot XP, If I want to just boot up and check my email or write a paper, I boot Ubuntu. (Vista isn’t really anything more than a pretty shell to XP, and Compiz Fusion for Linux looks prettier anyway. I just kind of have Vista so I can answer questions from all my friends who use it). So if/when I buy a Mac, it won’t be so I can run OS X on it and “screw windows/linux,” I’ll quad-boot and use them like I do now, each for what it’s best at. No operating system is even close to perfect, but they’ve all got their strong points. Just praise those rather than religiously defaming the weak points. Now most people aren’t as involved as me, and aren’t willing to switch out so many operating systems, they just want something that works. From my experience, they all work just fine for most people. The fact is: Vista costs $100+ for an upgrade, Leopard costs $100+ but requires expensive hardware, and Linux (whichever flavor suits your fancy) costs $0 (but I do acknowledge there is a trade-off of user-friendlieness). So the decision is yours, go for the pretty and expensive Mac/Leopard combination, or the not-as-pretty and not-quite-as-expensive PC/Vista combination. Just pick what you want and go with it. I’ve rambled much too long, but honestly, just shut up people, respect the ongoing work of hacker-techies the world over. Or don’t, what do I care, just don’t clog the internet with your angry rantings.

Firstly, I dont think OS X is any better than Vista. XP Maybe, but definitely not Vista. Everyone keeps screaming that OS X is BSD based but WTH. Firefox is open source but constant poking in the eye has made it more secure than IE. I believe that OS X needs that much poking as well. Ok so Leopard just got ASLR but Vista’s got that since last year. Another thing is the constant bashing of Microsoft by Jobs. I think that is so lame and childish. In my opinion, no OS is secure until it is tried and tested. However OS X is a great OS but I think Apple should either bring down the price or port it over to the PC platform. But I think the OS X86 project is definitely a good way to improve OS X security and improve Apple’s response to vulnerabilities in their code.

1.Did all your software, drivers and programs work?
2. Are you able to dual boot with win XP or does leopard install over XP?
3. Can I use a external HD (in place of the Flashdrive) and creat a large partition and install leopard on it?
Thanks

You guys are sure stupid, let’s review just what is the best and not.
1. Linux
There’s no question Linux is the better OS, have you dumb-asses even seen Beryl in action? PCLinuxOS is probably the best distro IMO for those switching from OS X or Windows. Having seen the demo’s on YouTube and all around the internet there cannot be any doubt Linux with Beryl, etc. is the better OS. Now that doesn’t mean the applications support is better but just that over-all the OS is much more impressive.
2. Windows
Although it does suck sometimes Windows just has to much freeware and other software to make it deserve the Winblows name. It has every possible piece of software you could ever want already written & waiting, all you need do is download it. Exactly how were you planning to extract images embedded in .mp3’s using OS X or Linux? I’m sure you weren’t because it’s impossible! What about extracting things from .swf files, yea as far as I know that’s only possible in Windows. There is so much in Windows you can’t do on any other platform, that’s why people steal it!
3. OS X Leopard
This ones unusual, it has a few good points, it runs well, but the lack of software is a burden. Now it certainly would experience a boom in development if it were suddenly made available to the PC market, that’s partly why it should be. I support the idea of distributing this on PC’s, not only that but I think it’s needed for the OS to survive. Windows has to much of a foothold on software to really be thrown off track now, but with the release of this on PC’s that could change.
Now many of you are lacking intelligence so let me explain this clearly, OS X Leopard is an OS, it can easily be distributed as an OEM only for PC’s. This would allow Apple to control the distribution channels for it… in other words they could just sell it for specific bundles, they could name them PC Leopard Bundles or something. There they could sell the OS with some Apple hardware but using Dell or HP as the distributers. This way Apple would know precisely the configurations it would be on while avoiding the pitfalls of selling the OS outright. A win-win for everyone.
But no, you are all to blind and stupid to realize such an easily accomplished goal. Anyways I’d rather use PCLinuxOS with Beryl than either of the other two :S

i’d be keen to try this out to give the big spotty kitty a spin before i shell out a shitload on over priced albeit sexy looking hardware.
When it comes down to performance vs cost.. macs suck big hairy steve jobs balls. their lack of customisability makes them weak systems.
i wanna try osx out to see if it’s idiot proof setup is worth the extra cash.
everyone in my industry swwears by macs, has the same indie outfit and frequents the same coffee shops. i personally prefer espresso over cappucino.. i want my caffine in me without the crappy creamy veneer…
thats why this project is worthwhile… it will help me figure out whether i can tolerate the un customisable crap that leo saddles you with. if i can… i will buy a mac (tho i will never be a faggot – read mac user – cos i see my hardware and software as tools)… not social movements. i just want the most efficient tool for the best price.
one thing ive noticed about the mac users here… they all get really stupid and insulting whereas the windows users tend to be alot more open minded. why this is… maybe the wind ruffled their hair or they spilled cream on their macbook matching clothing.
remember.. its not what you have and what you run on it, it all comes down to productivity this project allows users to tfind out for themselvves instad of hearing all the marketing bullshit.
kudos to all the hackers that did it.

Honestly, if harware manufacturers did their job correctly and you dont keep the entire library of extra drivers on your system Windows is a stable os, End of story, Every issue i have ever had with windows was a compatability one… due to a crummy driver, now you can say all you want that having higher driver requirements would make Mac os More unstable, But in the end its all on the publisher of the driver itself, NOT the operating system, If Apple would release a version of mac os for OEM manufacturers of boutique pc’s and kept the possibility of lousy drivers down, they could slay the hell out of Windows easy, Schools, one of the larger consumers of mac hardware would still use Apple hardware, and the fad of posessing one of these black or white devices would continue to skyrocket.

Hi
I had some trouble installing on Intel’s 945 Chipset, but it installed perfectly on a 965. Another problem I had was compiling the Patched DVD from the original. Having spent a lot of time trying to fix the script I realized the problem was with the bash shell under Leopard. This is therefore very important: the scripts were written to run under Tiger not Leopard! After installation it ran flawlessly.
I think it was very appropriate that the opensource version of the kernel was called Darwin. Now MacOS has evolved to fit a new ecological niche previously occupied by Windows. This new Darwin/MacOS Hybrid will lead to the eradication of the windows species altogether. It is the survival of the fittest from now on.

Despite MacOS X being “more secure” than Windows, is IS security through obscurity. There is no system that can’t be hacked if enough people band together.
It’s also somewhat ironic to discuss the security of an OS in the comment tree for how it was hacked to run on unapproved hardware in less than a day.

Mac OS X runs as good and as stable on a Intel PC as it does on a “Proper Mac” whatever that is. Any operating system should be able to run on any computer regardless of brand. There is no point to keep it to just one brand at all. Apple do this to lock you up to their hardware.
It should really be licenced, but if so, then made sure to work on Intel PC´s. It really only needs driversupport for hardware not used or supported by Apple´s own Intel macs today. It does run just like any other mac as it is when all works, like ethernet, sound.
You won´t notice that you are not using an computer with an Apple logo on it.
Also, if you go and buy the Mac OS X 10.5, you have every right in the freaking world to do whatever you want with it at home on your comp. No company in the world makes laws!
If you hack it and patch it at home and don´t share that info, then it is NOT illegal at all.
Funny thing is, that on many Windows Vista certified machines or hardwarde, it runs better with OS X then it does with Vista.
If you like monopoly, and supporting companies that want to keep standards closed, then YOU are then one with a problem.
To say it won´t be as stable, and run as well on nonapple hardware is nonsense. An Apple computer is nothing more then a PC anyway.
It´s all Intel inside. Apple just does not use all the Intel hardware, and therefore some things needs to be patched or have drivers written to it, but it works all the same. Some people just don´t want to hear this because they wasted loads of money and bought a lie.
Good Luck to all!

I do not think that Apple has any intention of supporting standard PC’s. There is a great deal of open source unix development that would make hardware support on OS X a no brainer given the vast resources apple has when compared to OS that rely on open source.
I have spent years on Windows and Linux as standard desktop environment. Recent jump to OS X has significantly boosted my productivity in all areas. (Development, IT, Engineering Student, Network Installation, Standard Office Functions) I’m not some fan talking about the good looks, the OS is simply much more intuitive then Windows and offers most of the functions near and dear. Natively forwarding X11 is even easier then Linux! I think spaces implementation is a little clumsy when compared to gnome/KDE… I also have had 0 downtime in over a year. I have never gone a single year in windows without needing to reformat for some reason……. I don’t care if it is because of a small user base or proprietary hardware, I’m about the bottom line.

To People asking “why Apple doesn’t sell OSX for PC, such a shame!”
Well, Apple sells computers, selects a few good hardware to put in and codes a nice OS with relyable drivers in it. That’s one of the reasons why OSX is so stable and optimised : their coders don’t waste time with drivers issues for all the crap available in the world. A commercial OSX for PC should work with all machines, even the wairedest, like my tower with a laptop Amd Turion 64. With all graphic cards and so forth… All that work to sell more of a less relyable OS and less of their (better) but more relyable hardware. Not speaking of marketing considerations like a blured image of Macintosh in the public (=non-geak) a loss of exclusive flair that came with the design, quality, and price tag.

Hi,
OS X is just jazzed up unix, (BSD) it has drivers in place via darwin project , Linux covers drivers easy enough and is just as stable if not more so, I think Apple will release OSX for PC as it slowly releasing all its apps, quicktime itunes now safari.
Vista is forcing price reductions on hardware, making the mac look poor value
People should try a modern linux (kubuntu great) before OSX, there not much difference once you remove aqua.
If like gloss KDE4’s out soon.
Why pay for software, spend it on hardware.

Does Leopard have a problem with what video card you use? My download will be done in a few hours, and I’m going to put it on my desktop later. Right now I’m running an XFX 6800XT, but I’m looking at upgrading to a Radeon HD 2900GT. Will I have any problems with leopard working on those cards?
My full specs: Intel Q6600, 2GB DDR2 800 (soon to be 4GB), dual SATA DVD burners, I’ll put it on a 74GB raptor drive, and it would be nice if it could read/write to my 2x 250GB RAID0 drives, a creative sound card, and video capture card.
This is very exciting, I’ve been wanting a mac for a while, but the price has always turned me away. Thanks for making this available to us!

At home, I’ve been using Macs exclusively for three years now, and I’ve owned a bunch of iMac G4s, a Dual G5, a couple of PowerBook G4s and two first generation iMac Core Duos. I’m in the PC industry for more than two decades now.
To make it short: Windows XP systems in average are much more stable and faster than Mac OS X systems. This is especially true when you compare both systems on the very same hardware, in this case the Intel Macs. OS X requires on average more reboots than Windows XP. Vista is about on par with OS X Leopard.
What Windows does NOT have is that annoying rotating beach ball that appears on OS X all the time.
As for the reliability of the hardware: Anyone here ever heard of the notorious G5 freezes and the OS X “grey screen of death”? Anyone ever saw a “grey screen of death” while trying to watch a DVD on a PowerBook G4? No? Then you never used a Mac, fellows, or you are still in the ‘denial’ phase.
Usability: Well. Leopard has made a multitude of things WORSE. Try using the download stack when you have around 40 icons in your docks on a 20″ screen. You won’t even be able to click on anything in the download stack anymore. Dashboard has always been a useless piece of crap. Microsoft stole the gadget idea much better from Konfabulator than Apple did. What is Exposé good for? You better thake that “replace folder” question in Finder literally – which is the stupidest concept since the invention of file management. I almost never want to replace, I almost always want to merge, as Windows Explorer does it. Talking about the Finder: It got better in Leopard, but it sill sucks big time in general. Even the overhauled and crappy Windows Explorer in Vista does a better job.
And where is Java 6 on the platform that “makes Java a first class citizen” and claims to be the “best Java platform ever”?
And where are all the “secret features” Steve Jobs teased us with. I still haven’t found one.
Apple hardware is cheaper than a comparable PC? That was true in the first weeks after the switch to Intel, now it is only true for Mac Pros. Apple still has the advantage that direct comparisons are not always possible, because there are almost no iMac-class all-in-one-PCs available. On the other hand: Why should they? The basic PC concept is to offer expandibility, something Apple just does not want to offer to their customers. People would not “upgrade” to a new iMac every two or three years if they could just upgrade its hardware components, now would they?
Apple is selling a chain of closed systems, and the company does not like to share their cake. Microsoft acts very differently: The follow the “share and rule” approach; they let everybody do what they want as long as they can collect their Microsoft tax.
There is a lot of beautifully designed software available for the Mac, and usually that software offers much more usability than the competetion on the PC offers. However, it comes at a premium, and on the long run, you are much better off with the freedom of the PC.
The PC is not a supermodel as the Mac, but it knows how to cook, does the laundry for you and it certainly does not limit you to Windows or a certain hardware configuration. The PC gives you choice.
After three years, I am no longer a “Mac-Fanboy”, and I am no longer on a mission to talk other people into buying a Mac, either. Since January, my Mac at work is the perfect working horse — with Vista. At home, I dual boot into Windows XP only for gaming. (Gaming – now that is something Mac OS X is the worst imaginable platform for.) I’ve purchased so many expensive software licenses for OS X in the last three years, that it would be financial suicied to switch back to PCs.
Chances are, however, that I will buy an additional PC for gaming and real world programming (another area where OS X plainly sucks; Objective-C is deservedly a niche language, and Cocoa is Mac-only and therefor useless for me).
I will probably go on doing photo, audio and video processing on the Mac, because some of the software that I have is from Apple and thus Mac-only. However, Adobe would probably give me crossgrades back to Windows, which would make sense, because their software is actually faster on Windows. So maybe I will slowly migrate back on the long run, but I haven’t yet made that final decision.
Now about Hackintoshs: I can understand that many people are curious about it. But it is illegal, and OS X won’t give you ANYTHING you cannot have with a current GNU/Linux distribution. Try Fedora Core 8 “Werewolf”, for example. This distribution is much snappier on your hardware than OS X Leopard (yes, I have tried it on both my 17″ PowerBook G4 1,67GHz 2GB RAM -and- on my 20″ iMac Core Duo 2 GHz with 2GB RAM) and it even looks a lot better. The new Gnome desktop effects really make you “wow”. Both OS X and Vista just look old in comparison. If you don’t need commercial software like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro to make your living, go and learn to use open source solutions like The GIMP! or whatever else is there that you might need.
I believe in paying developers for their work (and that is because I once worked for a software company that went bankrupt, but you can still download our products from the edonkey network).
Do not pirate OS X. BUY a license and then fight with Apple over the “only for Apple-branded hardware” paragraph. Chances are that the current Apple EULA is not even legal in your country. It most likely isn’t in Germany, because you do not have the chance to read it before you open the software package. Another reason is that in Germany this kind of bundling hardware with software is also not legaly binding for end-users (refering to the so-called “OEM-ruling”, in which Microsoft lost their case).
People also should not hack any form of product avtivation. It is better to make the vendors suffer by neither buying nor distributing their crippled products. Of course, in the business world often enough you do not have an acceptable choice to such crippled software, so you have to buy it, because you need it to make money.
However, I do not see any reason at all why a person needs for example a Citrix Terminal Server, an Adobe Creative Suite or Microsoft Office for private or hobby purposes at home. Do not pirate. Get and use the cheaper or even free alternatives.

You Windoze fanboys crack me up. Leopard is one hell of slick OS. I general live in the LINUX world. Having to use Windoze boxes for compatibility testing makes me ill. Since I switched from a Windoze craptop to an MBP there is no looking back.
MAC OS9 sucked.. sucked bit time. 10.x is damn good OS, a real OS. Although I still spend most of my time in shell logging into servers having he GUI for processing my photography projects, communicating with pals and frankly.. just enjoying the thing, I can’t understand how any could tout any M$ Windoze product.
I’m no Apple appologist, they do plenty of crappy anti-customer stuff IMHO. However that does not detract from the fact 10.5 is a real joy to run.

Lots of repeat commentary, so I’ll try to contribute something new.
Reasons for doing this:
Curiosity would be #1. I doubt anyone would invest in applications for a pirate/flaky OS install, but they’d sure enjoy the novelty of seeing it run. I’d bet most will operate it for a few days, maybe install FireFox, a few shareware items, just to claim they have it. If, a big if at that, their install ran with absolute stability (probably because they have otherwise compliant hardware), they might continue using OSX as if they had a real Mac.
Another group might be doing this for alternate development. Shareware authors might load this in a VM, along with XCode, in order to build Mac versions of something they want to release. It could serve well enough to at least package an installable application.
OSX for sale outside Mac hardware:
I read along here that Apple is doing fine as they are, they’re a hardware company, etc. In my view, Apple is a design company first, hardware second. Most of their current revenue growth is from iPod and iPhone. Computer hardware sales have not been quite the cash cow of late.
Apple’s designs, however, have stirred world wide interest hardly like anything else, specifically over the iPhone and the various iPod variants. Everything from the look and feel to the click of the connectors is considered and reconsidered. Design is the heart of what they do – all else descends from that.
Hardware is a necessary component of the product they sell, and so the product on store shelves is physical, but it’s value and marketability is not in it’s physical presence – they’re not just widgets in an inventory. The attention to design detail makes them curiosities, unique in the world of products they’re compared against. Even with some design flaws, the overall balance of every product conveys a personality something like that of a Mercedes Benz.
In Japanese quality control ‘philosophy’, their approach to the science includes the net ‘negative impact on society’. This concept means they consider everything from quality vs price vs utility. If quality is too high, price is too high and impact on society is a net loss (unaffordable). If price is too low, quality is too low, and again there’s a net loss (un-serviceable for the intended purpose). Balance achieves the least net negative impact, that optimum point where price/quality/utility are as good as it can get. Lexus, for example, leans toward the quality end at a slight sacrifice of low pricing to suite a particular client base. Honda and Nissan balance somewhere toward the middle.
Apple, it appears, leans toward quality and innovative utility, like Lexus, servicing a particular client base of some affluence.
For OSX, it IS a means to an end in providing a computer that does what the client base wants, with a feel of quality not found in any other computer product line. However, like the physical components of the machine, that’s all subservient to the notion of design. What they sell isn’t simply an operating system, neither is simply a unit of hardware. They’re selling a design – it’s the only thing they can make unique about the entire thing.
OSX is technically Unix with a graphical API inset within it that defines the user’s experience. The components that make that aren’t unique over, say, X or KDE – from the engineer’s viewpoint. It is from the user’s viewpoint that this is a unique product. Similarly, the hardware is all made by other companies – all commodity parts – even the PowerPC (despite Apples’ input on the design, it was 95% IBM’s product as it followed the ideas of John Cooke). The RAM, the drives, all but the case are made by the same ‘other’ companies stamping out parts for every other hardware box on the market. The ‘feel’ of Mac hardware comes from the design of those details you touch, like the connectors, the buttons or even the artistic design of the case. Dell could make it, too – they’re clamshell cases are really quite good hardware, but they don’t have the Apple design.
Take the OSX out of the Apple hardware and put it on a PC, you only have a small part of that design. You’d realize quickly that 99% of the personality you encounter as you use the Mac is from OSX – you’d THINK you’re on a Mac, until, of course, you attach a cable, install another option card or look at that cheap beige case.

i am naive and somewhat computer illiterate so lets get that out of the way. so here’s the question…has anyone, or people, wanted to only run Windows OS on their Mac to the point of hacking it and actually downloading it, and then actually using it? i’m not talking about parrallels or boot camp or vmware. I like the guy that talked about the japanese philosophy of business…great points. most pc users don’t quite understand such a concept. It’s about controlling your product 100%. Same with some chefs and their restaurants…they want to make everything themselves and control the quality..period. and sometimes they will sell certain products they’ve made over the shelf to the passerbyes that aren’t smart enough to walk in and take a seat and be served up a perfect meal.

Jesus people, chill with the “Macz 0wn ur a winloser, stop pirating you’re all evil bad ppl” shit. I need Mac OS to run the latest version of Shake. Apple sells the Mac version of Shake for $500 and the Linux version for *$5000* It’s the exact same program, yet 10 times the cost?
So I have no moral problem pirating and screwing Apple, because they’re clearly trying to screw me. If apple didn’t markup the Linux version in an attempt to force people to buy Mac hardware I might even consider getting a real Mac. But now this is a matter of principle to me, I don’t appreciate underhanded pricing scemes, and will never give money to Apple.

i design macs
all this macs are only pushing ther hardware not software is bullish
i work for them and i have to put ther shit together and let me tell all you know it alls
that its the same parts as a normal pc with an intel motherboard with intel chipsets from 945 gma to 955 gma and p34
along with pci express ati and nvidia video cards
the only difference is they add a chip to the motherboard to limit os x it self
no there not a hardware company cause they use the same ish as asus ibm hp and dell
so kill all that mac is better then windows nonsense
there both computers that crash or hav’nt crashed yet
the reason that windows runs great on a new intel mac is cause they are good mother boards
thats it
if they made there own specific hardware they would have the market but they dont so get the point
i do admit that they are faster now that moved over to intel and ive seen more people buying macs now to
but still in all my dell has a legit version of os x 10.5 on it with out no hacks or patches and windows as well and windows blows 10.5 out of the water
and for you nonbelivers
my dell was setup by apple not dell
so you aint sayin nothing
its just like steve said there will be no video support for ipods and g4 and g5 processors were better then intel chips witch made mac os x faster then windows lol
Dec 24th, 2007

a question for “i design macs”
can you tell us how to do what you did with your dell. i lean toward os x because it’s seems more precise yet simple and not so cluttered. but if macs are made of all the same hardware (though their setup is very clutter free) then why would i spend a few thousand on something i can spend only a thousand. anyway just would like to know more. i guess i also have another question to anyone: what is the best linux, gnome, kde, etc operating systems. thanks

after following the instruction i several coasters and a pc that will not boot leopard.
only the uphuck 10.4.9 dvd boots and installs but will not boot once installed
the motherboard is a intel desktop board installed in 2000 and/or 2001
cpu is pentuim 4 i dont know if it is SSEn
256 meg ddr
agp rage pro.
i salvaged the computer from a dumpster of the local school they was throwing out so i have no idea of it is compatible
i guess intel desktop boards are not supported
these instructions builds the iatkos version witch causes kernel panics on booting of the dvd almost immediately as soon as the apple screen comes up.
i am giving up for now until i can get a new late model pc or a friend to help me.

But what about this… why wouldn’t Apple strike up an alliance with e.g., Dell where Dell offers a line of Mac OS PCs?! Apple could always out-innovate Dell with it’s products, not to mention extensions (iPod, iPhone, etc.) but a Dell Mac OS would offer a real added boost to the credibility of the Mac OS, also in the corporate market where big margins can be made…

If Mac is all about the hardware like I have read, (2k-5k) if you read the post there are more people willing to buy the software not the hardware. (Funny I could have sworn that people were thrilled about buying hardware…..yea really….). it may be more profitable selling software
The only way I want to port Mac OS X to a pc is that I may do Mac repair from my pc to Mac hardware, without having to buy an expensive piece of equipment, and be able to profit more from the people actually buy that expensive piece of hardware.
Question, if it costs more and it is rarer, will it cost more to service and or repair? To waste money or not to waste money that is the question.
P.S. I have owned a Mac before and the reason is that that machine was made to play with (it’s an expensive toy) could not get any production from it (waste of my money). All the tools needed are already made for pc not Mac. All you can do with a Mac is editing videos and pictures and is you don’t pay the 5 grand they want you to pay for the top of the line Mac? It will still crash and hang, for it does not have all the bells and whistles.

Hi,
Thanks for the awesome tutorial. I’m a Mac-newbie so I’m not at all familiar with this process but I had problems like some of you and I found a way around them so I thought I’d post.
If you can’t see your drive listed, try going to
UTILITIES->Disk Utility
You need to create a partition for it to install. On Windows, this is done with a prompt. I’m guessing this isn’t done with a MAC. The rest should be self-explanatory.
The other problem I had was when I rebooted, after the install, and I took the F8 option and the -s mode, I could not get into the Flash Drive using the instructions. I had to type ‘exit’ at the console prompt and it booted back to normal setup screen. I believe that’s what’s missing in the instructions.
You should then be able to select the Utilities option to get to the terminal.

Also,
I ran into a problem installing the patch. I looked at the script and noticed that it was looking for the path /Volumes/Leopard/etc…
I created a partition called MAC not knowing that the script was going to look at the partition Leopard. So, I had to re-do that.
I also changed the Volume Label using a Windows machine and unfortunately it will convert all of the lower case characters to upper case. I got around this by editing the script to all upper case for the path of /Volumes/Patcher/files, which is stated near the front of the script file.
Hope that’ll help someone.

okay i would like to say something to people who think that Apple is better than Microsoft.
Again comparing apples to oranges (no pun intended).
MOST IMPORTANTLY!
MAC OS X is PIRATED UNIX
WINDOWS is PIRATED OS/2
Unix and Ibm are the real creators except for linux distros (NOT MAC)
so everyone is wrong, no one makes their own stuff, ever.

There is no more Mac vs. PC. The Macs’ hardware wise nothing more
than just a quite average PC. Welcome to the 21st Century, today we all hope Mac OS X will be our way out of the Microsoft misery.
Wake up !
Mac OS versus Windows is on.

As far as a Mac or PC I prefer to use whatever does the best job for the least amount of money as posible. PC’s have their merit as do Macs. Take it from someone who has owned a computer since 1984. Ive owned a Commodore Vic 20, 64, and Amiga. I also owned an Apple Lisa and a 486 PC. I currently own several computers, an iMac, a Pentium and Athlon PC, a Sun Ultra 10, and Sun Ultra 2, and about 5 other PC’s. It all depends on what you want to do with your computer. The most stable boxes I’ve owned HAVE NOT BEEN APPLE. I’ve owned 3 Apples and know that Apples lock up as much or more than my PC’s! I happen to have a Windows 2000 pro box that hasn’t been rebooted for years NO JOKE!! Maybee I got lucky with my choice of hardware? But the most stable box I’ve owned is My Sun, then my Windows XP box (only after service pack 2), then my iMac (OSX 10.4).
As far as software goes nothing in my opinion beats Windows. This is only because you have many more titles available to you than you do with other OS’S. And just about any program made for a MAC has it’s Windows counterpart. Why would Apple come out with a dual boot XP and OSX box if this statement wasn’t true. The only drawback to Apple OSX is that you don’t have as many choices of software titles available for it.
As far as hardware goes nothing beats SUN (if you can afford it). I have a 10 year old SUN PC that is 64bit (and one that is dual 64bit) and has over a gig of ram. PC’s and MACs are only just now offering that.
As far as the comment some guy made about not being able to record Audio with a PC without it crashing doesn’t know how to set up his PC!! For your information at my last studio session, Brad, my Bass player used Cubase and MAC OS that damned thing crashed a million times and we ended up loosing hours of work.
For PC’s I’ve found Reaper and N-Track Studio are great for multitracking and have all the power you need to make a great sounding CD. They both support a slew of great plugins. One thing you need to know is USE SCSI drives (or someone told me serial ata works ok too) to multi-track with!
Long story short if you like a MAC then use it. But don’t try to make false claims about Macs only to try to justify paying more money for what is now basically a PC anyway.
Jan 29th, 2008
JoeH
I have used Macs for about 8 years, recently I made the switch to PC (shock horror!). After using both OS’s extensively I can say OSX (Tiger, Leopard, etc.) are the better operating systems but i would still use a PC over it due to the hardware modding restrictions and gaming abilities.
Don’t disrespect Windows, nor OSX, they both have different uses for different people.
Also, to the people who keep saying “just buy a f**** mac”……no, i don’t want to.
My PC cost a hell of a lot more than a mac does, I want to be able to run the best OS on the best hardware, unfortunately thats hard to do at the moment – usually picking one means giving up the other.
So what i’ trying to say is, just stop comparing the OS’s, they both have good things and bad things about them….

Hey!
I was going to buy a macbook today, but in the shop I thought it was too expendsive, I can get better hardware if I get an PC.
So I have decided to buy an PC and try to install leopard on in.
Now is the question; witch PC laptop should I buy? I would like every thing to work, at least sound, wireless, grafics e.t.c.
anyone wo knows? and please dont give me a resond like, -If u want everything to work, by a REAL mac e.t.c.

Hi.
Problem solved for me. I started making more money without increasing my living expenses and now own an HP dv9000 Notebook AND a MacBook Pro. If I wanted to be stupid, I could by both computers each month, over and over and still be fine.
It sure sucks to be poor. I used to be a tinkerer, too. Spent a lot of time configuring, re-configuring, partitioning, re-partitioning, installing, re-installing, swapping hardware, downloading illegal software, OSes, etc.
Frick. Unless you’re a network administrator, or a member of an IT/IS staff and you’re a tinkerer, you’re a complete loser with too much time on your hands.
Running Leopard on a PC?! Who the hell cares? Make more money, be productive and stop wasting your stupid time, tinkering and hacking.
Being poor sure sucks to hell and back, doesn’t it? Hacking and tinkering keep you from making more money. I’ve been there and now I’m in a different place. Someone should’ve taken me out back to the shed and beat the hell out of me for wasting so much time.

Hi
I have Acer 6292….. how i can get leopard to install that machine ?
When i boot from dvd… there is only apple logo, but nothing happening
And yes… i have MacBook Pro too but i like to test how it works on normal pc hardware.
I think Acer 6292 should be quit close to macbook hardware:
- Intel core2duo T7300
- 2 G DDR2
- 160G HD
- Intel X3100 vga
So i think that intallation should be possible?

The comments are just too funny……seriously grow up and stop acting like a bunch of idiots who keep going on about how macs are better / windows is better.
Both mac/windows are good for certain things, and both have their advantages/disadvantages.
So stop acting like a bunch of tards and going on about how people who use windows are idiots.

The installation starts, then it says select a destination to install leopard. And the dialog box beneath it is empty, how the hell can i select a destination? And the installation stops there itself, I cant do anything but keep watching the screen. I dont think there is any problem with the partitions or my HD, as xp is running perfectly. Please help me out, tell me what may be going wrong.

1st. Great to hear that thair are a large effort going into creating a cross platform OSX i use a powerbook G4 on a PC monitor + a PC and i would like to be able have my mac work on 1 single platform lets say a PC so i dont have to drag a laptop with me all the time ( it sux)
2nd Apple is a Technology Corperation that means it makes the software that matches hardware and makes the hardware that matches the software
3rd what does it matter windows is better in some things and OSX is better in other tings and Linux is better in the rest of things thair is a stupid debate about what OS is better then the other, You can play your games cant you ? you can do your graphicle designs cant you ? you can programme your work cant you ?
doest it matter? NO poeple get thair work done on either of the 3
windows is for games
mac is for designing
Linux is for programming
i do all three and i see non the better
thay are all great in what thay do
just be happy for that
4th for everybody saying crap about the poeple (hackers and programmers) who do thair best to bring poeple things like this, shame on you for talking about them i do not see you doing that, it takes great skill and nolidge to understand and program something like this and i hope you break your clicking finger or something like that shame shame shame!
Good job on the patch guy’s/gal’s
keep up the hard work
Cheers for the patch, Dominance

I got my self a macbook. and i use Office/Messenger and other applications from microsoft but if there was another way iam sure that i had used that. but there isen´t
Because of microsoft´s monpol you need these applications..
the worst thing is the “live messenger for mac” its really a piece of crap software, but even amsn and other applications can´t do the job,,
Microsoft shuts apple out with making a “degraded version of it..
No suport for webcam and voice/ blink/nudge / sharing folder. and much more..

Hello,
I am new to the Mac thing and I’ve heard they’re good in video editing, audio editing and picture editing. The problem I have now is what machine should I get? I am leaning towards the desktop PC for practicality while Mac’s is a must-have for my productivity. This site is Heaven-sent! And I hope I could combine both but I need to ask some questions.
I need to ask what are the minimum specs for running Mac Leopard OS into an ordinary desktop PC.
What are the advantages and disadvantages to expect if I do want to try.
TIA!

dears all,
i couldn’t read all comments for now. but doing analyzis of markting strategies and at the same time conect them to the wishes of should or could be possible wents to be a hard work to deal with. for now i would like to say there should be no relgious wars between the systems, those we allready haw in the real world, which doesen’t even make the world easier and at the end of the road a computer is a tool to make life easier, isn’t it.
but for now enough of that stuff.
i’m using a macmini and made bootcamp and was for a littel while frustrated about the nonsupport of the different file-systems. i found some solutions (macfuse with ntfs-3g and for the other way round macdrive [hfs-explorer from the swedish man doesn't realy solve the problem]).
so this is a dualmachine now.
okay but now i have a msi-laptop vr 601 023 ne. i bought i to solve problems about some very specific software to use to handle pictures. but i had problems to build a networkconectic and still have becaus this systemdaminstration is not realy my deal. therefore windows vista isn’t easy to deal with. a bit more userfriendly enviorment would do wonders for ms.
so, now i want to install some of my old mac os x onto this machine because now i have two leagaly versions 10.4 and 10.5. I want to use the older one on the windowslaptop. but for now i run into the filesystem problem again.
so if there is anyone out there to direct me through the installation. maybe i could create my own patched disk from original mac volumes.
my 10.4 disk isn’t even recognized by the disk drive on the windowsmachine and the 10.5 finds only the bootcamp installation drivers.
can anybody tell me how to create an installtion-disk with toast.
thanks to all anarchist and individualist.
fuck for corporated identity and design.
being a charachter needs more than this. it needs personality!

Can’t you just install this and xp and decide which one to boot with ur pc. Isint there a software called Arconis OS selector???
Mar 17th, 2008
Bengt
dear bill bob,
i’m not sure about this software you named.
one thing is the different filesystems ms and apple uses: ntfs and hfs+.
second thing is that there in my laptop only is one hd. so it has to be configurated as one of ntfs and one of hfs+.
so if that could work it out. which isn’t describe on the site of acronis, if it is an native machinebuilder or an emulator.
if it isn’t an emulator. i’ll try it. but this one is commercial and cost in front of the price of an apple os almost half the ammount it.
but still on their site apple os isn’t describe as supported.
do you know more.

for mac fanboys go this link
http://blogs.csoonline.com/windows_vista_6_month_vulnerability_report
and see for yourself that indeed your deserted OS is steel more vulnerable than vista.funny isn’t it? with so little community and so little hardware support and still so many holes.
now it should be obvious why some rational and educated person isn’t going to use that piece a … .

@moh.sakhaii
Firstly, that image key says it all – it shows problems that have been disclosed and then fixed, and problems that have been disclosed and not fixed, it entirely misses the ones that Microsoft have chosen to deny the existence of!
Secondly, i have had FAR more problems on my PC than my Mac, i use both, and i have never had leopard crash since it came out, and when i installed vista (on a PC with FAR above minimum specs) daily crashes were routine. In the end it annoyed me so much that i reinstalled XP.
Thirdly, if you are a PC fanboy you will save yourself a LOT of time and effort by not commenting on and reading mac sites. If you truly want to see why OSX is so awesome then try it yourself!
P.S. also that graph shows the stats for 10.4 (Tiger) which has been out since April 2005 (almost 3 years as opposed to vista’s 1 and a half, which is far more time to find and fix problems.) 10.5 (Leopard) is by far Apples most stable operating system yet.

I see all MAC maniacs defending Mac but … Mac is just a pc … modded inside and with a software and SO unix based like linux .. lets make a test
the MAC maniacs chose the Mac version , and I make a pc with the parts i Chose at same money value … both with SO unix based Mac Os X / linux some distro and we test the both and the Mac users will see the diference and a real power of Pcs .. the problem here is Steve Jobs make Ferraris and Pc assembler make serial cars . the mac sell one unit the PC assembler sell one million its numeric question . sometimes the serial cars are good …
Im running Ubuntu with QX9650 in one Mb Asus Striker with 4gb of CORSAIR PC2-8888 XMS2 DOMINATOR and 4 x WESTERN DIGITAL RAPTOR-X 150 Gb 10000 RPM Raid 0 (Hardware raid ).. and grafics are in charge of 2x NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600G PCIE SLI …… Mac for wath ?

Wow, not to many people actual do there homework do they? MAC is not as well off as some may think. Didn’t Bill just give Apple a couple billion dollars so they would not go under? Also, the reason MAC is not doing so good is because of the fact that they did not release the rights for other companies to make hardware for MAC’s. That alone almost killed MAC’s. Think back people or is it before most of you people were born? MAC’s are great machines but like anyuthing. There are pro’s and con’s. Back in the day, MAC’s were better computers depending what industry you were in(graphic artists loved MAC’s) but now the PC has surpassed the performence of MAC’s. It won’t be long before Bill Gates has to give Apple more money to keep them afloat unless Apple smartens up. Like releasing their OS to run on PC’s and not just MAC’s. Maybe?

BTW, I hate Windows and Bill Gates as he imo releases his software WAY to soon. They need to test there software for ALLOT longer before they server it to the public at ridiculas prices. Also, Vista is the biggest flop around, not to mention Bill things we are all stupid as you can not do anything in Vista without a dozen confermation boxes and even then it stops you. So much for having the right to do what you want with the software you pay money for. Funny, they say you do not own the software you buy but when it screws up and costs you money, it’s yours then. If Apple would drop its prices on their computers, maybe people would buy them. Besides, how does ANY company justify the outragous prices they charge for crappy software? Oh ya, we stupid people buy it and do what we are told to do, when to do it and how to do it too! What a world we live in.

ok everyone. lets stop with the insults back and forth about who’s got the bigger c*ck. this forum was initially created for those people who want to try something new. What the hell is wrong with trying out leopard before you buy it? Who care’s if its not on freaking MAC hardware. Keep this forum for people who are willing to try things. Don’t make this a Microsoft or Bill Gates issue. Don’t make this a piracy issue. If your shit gets pirated or leaked, its your freaking fault. Not everyone has enough money for a MAC. People… its not cheap! So.. getting back to the point. The person above us had a question. Unless you have the answer to that question or anyone elses, save your comments for another forum. Makes it harder to dig for information you are seeking

Look, I am a serious mac fanboy, and all i have is mac mac mac, other than my laptop. If people want to know why Mac wont make a pc version, is because they are to good, They are just to good for it. America has the highest mac population! Whereas here in england, macs are rare! (unless your a film director or media teacher in a school) and another reason why they wont is because they arent going to freely give away their UNIQUE OS. Windows has stuck with the DOS base system. A HP or a COMPAQ or a DELL, has hardware written for the DOS, so trying to convert it isnt going to work! Its like dressing a dog up like a cow and telling it to go moo!
Also, Sonu, If you try Re-Installing it it might help, as i know its the complete opposite, but it worked with XP for me.
ALSO, I am thinking of converting my PC to Leopard, but i dont know if its going to work, So if i post my system specs, will someone be able to Help? Thank You
PS. If someone can help i will post my System Specs then

Hi this is a reply for the ignorant who said that MAC has a “unique OS” or that “they are good” but never explain why.
So let me tell you this, first of all MAC OS is just a Unix with a very nice graphic interface, why don’t you ask your Mac boys to open the source code of theirs interface? Why don’t you wonder yourself why isn’t the interface GNU as Gnome, KDE and the other ones.
And about the “just being good” thing let me tell you this. THE HARDWARE IS THE SAME, Samsung screen, Asus Mother Board or how they call it “logic board” and the rest of the components, you name it, the only difference is that they have a crappy chip in the board telling is a mac, so Leopard and the rest of the crap could work.
I like Macs, don’t get it twisted, I’m just not blinded by Steve Job’s magic tricks, something like …. wooooops there you go, a DVD burner for only 9999 U$D

woohoo~ osx on a pc~~! whoopy frickin doo~~!
if you want osx, fork the extra cash for a mac. itll save you in the long run because apple doesnt charge 4billion dollars for software. not to mention that macs have shit tons of freeware. which means you can do everything for free. instead of buying umpty hundred dollar software that wont work after you install the newest version of msn

Ok ‘YOU KNOW ME’, Let’s settle this here and now ok! Yes, Steve jobs does damn right Pi*s of anyone who buys a mac with their BIG BIG price tags, they are pathtically expenesive and they do cost a bomb, but when you compare the hardware of a Compaq Presario V5000 (as a prime example seeing that that is my make and modle) The ardware is alot different, the Compaq has basic things, but the Macbook PRO has more than basic, it has lots of ram and lots of memory, a big HDD and what not as the list goes on and on and on. But when you look at the windows, what does it have, annow that your going to say that, ‘Thats just the machine specs and not the OS’ But when it comes down to running it, it is the hardware that comes into play.
It is a unique OS as look at how many virus checkers you go through on windows, HUNDREDS. But then look at how many you need mac, Yeh, NONE, It has its own prebuilt into Leopard, and Tiger and whatever.

Hello! This is great! I know many friends that they mostly work with Macs but they wouldn’t like to invest on an expensive Mac for home. They would welcome the opportunity to run Mac OS in their typical PC. And speaking of a “typical PC”, is there any hack or patch for all of us that don’t have a new PC? Not everybody has Core 2 Duo in their PC, most of us have a humble Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT that of course doesn’t support SSE3 instructions. Any workaround? I tried to cheat and install it, but it responds with an “incompatible CPU” message and system halted
Thank you anyway, keep up the good work!

People are stupid.. bill gates gets his way not having mac os’ on the ibm based machines. you could say Mac’s not “allowed” to create their operating systems for pc’s. why you ask? think about it.. all the people on this are trying to get mac osx leopard on their ibm based pc that is meant to have windows as it’s main os, or even linux.. but if mac was release osx for pc’s how much money do you think microsoft would lose to people switching to macs’ os. the loss in money by microsoft from people not buying their os would be devistating.. mac is being extremly smart with the way their dealing with everything.. they’re slowly releasing applications for ms windows like safari or itunes, both of which give people a taste of what osx really is.. i know i use safari as my main web browser and itunes for all of my music.. there for if i was to switch to their native os i would enjoy them that much more.

Listen “Patrick” I only post here when people write nonsense things to to call the stupid ass comments about something they have no clue about.
1) MAC doesn’t run on PC’s not because Gates doesn’t want to, is because of a chip that MAC hardware has that identifies if is the proper hardware.
2) Steve Jobs big buck is in selling the hardware at a premium price, that’s why you have to pay big money for a shitty ass MAC mini, haven’t you wondered why re they so expensive?
3) the BIOS system is different, I don’t remember very well how they call it, the thing is that PC use BIOS they have RFI, thats why some people created the EFI emulator that emulates MACs starting process on PC hardware and with it you can get away with installing it.
All that made by APPLE of course, the NOT LETTING the system run on PC
Because you could get a better computer per dollar ratio if u get a PC and then put theirs shinny unix on it, moron.
Dont you know that MAC is just a UNIX distribution with a proprietary visual interface?
read some, do some homework, talk to your folks and then think twice before posting something stupid.
for all the Mac Lovers or people who may want to try it please look in torrents for the “KALYWAY” DVD is the one I use and works great with a couple tweaks.
Thanks

You’re Pro-Capitalism aren’tcha?
These companies make extreme sums of money off of the hardware and the people who do choose to buy their software. The people who pirate hardly make a dent in their wallet. The companies just bitch about it because they can.

Im so Agree with Dimitri, its so uncomfortable to have to turn on your computer and to know each time that your going to feed your own farm…(virus). Dimitri said something very real, if you dont want to have problem about spies, wirus, pishing ads… anyway, obviously your going to find the best way to no have that in your computer. You will be able to think in mac or linux, like a next plataform, and to not return to windows. I would like to not be worried about virus anymore. And windows is not giving me that. And Im sarting to think how I can get mac for my Pc.

You Know Me
Come on, what about a little bit of analysis?
We all know how good Macs are handling the virus thread, same with Linux, there are almost 0 viruses written for those plattaforms. But what would happen if people switch from Windows to Mac or Linux massively? All kind of Spywares, Malwares, Viruses and who know what else would start populating those 2 plattaforms.
Yes, Windows is not perfect, but NEITHER are Macs or Linux boxes, it is all about statistics, it is more reliable to attack the system that the 90% of computers use than put your efforts into attack a minority.
Money transactions, gambling all sort of things go on Windows machines, with Macs pretty much all they do is the same but from a global point of view in a way minor scale.
Is all about success in these people minds and the bigger catch is in the more used system around town.
The more popular something become the more attractive it will become to code writers who would do anything to take advantage of the smallest flaw.
Just wait and see.
In my case I use Leopard because of how “cool” looks, because in the graphic design world Macs are the number one solution, but is all about style, at the end they all do the same, 01010101011101010101

i tried to install leopard on my laptop. i’ve 2 partitions on it. one with Vista and the other is free to install Leopard. (both are NTFS)
after i boot with the dvd, the instalation starts, i choose the language to install, and in that part to choose where to install, it shows the 2 partitions but with an exclamation (!) saying that i can’t install leopard in my PC. does anyone knows why?
sorry about my english.
Thanks

i havent tried it bu i guess it works. but it works without support for hardware and point is that you can do something with it other than admire nice GUI.
suppose you have to use hardware configuration similar to macs intel configuration to get it work ok with leopard

Hummm, curious to know if Apple actually gains more sales by having their OS run on PC’s. Someone gets curious, installs a patched version, likes it, then buys an Apple.
The only reason I semi switch and now advocate (semi because I still use windows for engineering programs) the use of Macs was because I got an incredible deal on a G4 Imac. I bought the unit brand new for $450.00, kept it for two years and had absolutely no problem with it. I again had the opportunity to buy a Macbook with an intel duo upper edition for $1050.00, sold my Ibook for $750 (still amazed how it held it’s value), and was able to get the Mac that could run XP for my special programs. I haven’t look back since. My switch was all possible due to an inexpensive introduction. The Mac proved itself to me and perhaps others running it on a PC will see that too.

ive used all three for manys a yr this is how i see it btw this is undeniable
MAC > good software, stable, ***Shite*** at games.
Windows> insecure (just get a decent firewall if you dont have one ur an idiot, ive never had XP hacked in the last 8 yrs nor vista), games Ah yes games beautiful games strongest point, plus the shear amount of appications availible.
if it looks bad use a theme ffs. Vista more stable but has loads of fucking annoying shit that u have to remove.
customization simply put better than MAC as far as hardware is concerned u build it all your self brilliant! mac for simpletons
Linux> probably the most securest but lets be honest all its applications are Punny in Camparision to the same apps in wheater field for the PC and mac + gamming is a joke on linux.
linux is however decent as a server

well my homies, i’ve tested the mac osx ToH Leo version (sadly it’s an RC2 version, i’m waitin’ for an ‘complete’ release), it’s just a simple dvd wihtout any other configuration, i put the mac runnin’ into an acer travelmate 2420 (1.6GHZ Intel Celeron processor, 1Gb RAM DDR2, 128Mb video Intel 965GM Xpress Graphics,40GB mini IDE HDD Atheros wi-fi, cd-rw/dvd-r) it works nice and fast, the initial format of the HDD must be fat32, the os doesn’t recognize wi-fi, modem, and video, but it could be configured, it’s just sekk in the web for support forums
whatsoever, i preffer the osx ‘cuz it cannot be infected by viruses, and the stability is a base of the software

Microsoft Windows is a series of software operating systems produced by Microsoft. Microsoft first introduced an operating environment named Windows in November 1985 as an add-on to MS-DOS in response to the growing interest in graphical user interfaces (GUIs).[1] Microsoft Windows came to dominate the world’s personal computer market, overtaking Mac OS, which had been introduced previously. At the 2004 IDC Directions conference, it was stated that Windows sadly had approximately 90% of the client operating system market. The most recent client version of Windows is Windows Vista and has Microsoft already trying to develop a new operating system because it is such a horrible failure.

Apple could make a deal with one, two or six different motherboard vendors to support one motherboard from each company. They could support a tightly limited list of chipsets.
The OS X installed base would triple in a year if they made such an arrangement .
But Apple does not care. They make most of their money selling gadgets, not computers. And sales of genuine Apple computers would drop like a stone.

Hmmm…
Not bad, I think I’ll try this out once I’ve saved up for a laptop (Currently using a shared computer). I’m guessing I’d want an intel processor on it, right?
Let’s see…. install XP, create a blank partition, install OS X on said partition. Then follow up by installing Opensuse. Seems do-able.
Also, I don’t see what all the hype is about. All these guys did was played with the OS a bit and shared it with the rest of the world. They just did what all the developers for Linux do every day. I congratulate them, and hope they continue onto the next new Mac OS…

Fancy hack. Although I think Apple kinda assumed this would happen as they made the kernel run on Intel x86. If the hacks and drivers become so good that they can replace Windows on many enough PCs, more people will buy a Mac for their next PC, which is good for Apple obviously.
Although, for me, the only reason to use a mac is for advanced working with multimedia. It falls short to the gaming (Windows) and general computer use (Linux), (I prefer linux). It’s overpriced.
You can get this much Mac for 16000NOK (about 3000$)
3GHz C2D
8800GS 512MB
2GB ram
500GB HDD.
If you buy these parts yourself and build yourself/get some to build it for you, this can be had for under 8000NOK (1500$). So either, you’re paying shitloads for the OS, or shitloads for the design/brand, which is stupid.
Aug 7th, 2008
3lemental
@Maister
Yes, you are paying for design – but you try to fit that much computer into a package the size of an imac!! also it includes a screen (and apple are well known as having some of the best screens) and all the parts are very good quality and chosen to work well with each other and the Macintosh OS. Plus the aftermarket support from Apple is some of the best in the world, and also they aren’t able to sell as many of the computers as some competitors so they have to price them higher – it’s the law of supply and demand. Apple has chosen to target the higher market, and they do very well at what they do.
Not that i don’t find the prices high, but there is a reason.

Step 3. Patching Leopard
Now that you have got Leopard installed, you need to patch it. Before we do that Boot into the Leopard DVD like the way you did before.
Wait for the Darwin Bootloader to load. Once it loads up press F8. You should now see a prompt. Type -s and hit enter. The DVD will now load in Verbose mode. Watch for any errors. It should load without a problem because you have already installed Leopard.
Once the setup is loaded select your Language. Once done you should now be seeing the Welcome Screen. Once there navigate to Utilities-Terminal.
Once the terminal loads up, you now need to browse to your USB Drive, so follow the steps below, typing it exactly as it appears below in the Terminal.
In the command line type the following as they appear here
cd ..
cd ..
cd Volumes
cd Patcher
cd files
i cannot get past the -s it dose not to the terminal sreen and it say when go in a diferent way it will let type
cd ..
cd ..
cd volumes
then thats it it say directory not found when i type
cd patcher an cd files directory not found
an last ./9a581postpatch.sh
directory not found

Well I have read most of these posts and it seems you all are debating about why and who is doing what or not doing.
thats there backend.
Well from the way I see things is you all are blaming Apple for not doing its part for drivers and Software for there system..
You all for get the all important that Microsoft is a dominating force and when they cornered the market most software developers run to join the band wagon so they don’t get left out and loose out on revenue.
Its the old story of the big get bigger so they have a following.
Now Apple does not write all the drivers that hardware requires to run under there OS since other manufactures who are big enough and have the resources to have programmers to write drivers for the OS.
Now if you were to do the research and see exactly what was supported for hardware and buy each piece that was for Pc and would work with Mac then you would have a MAC in theroy.
Now we also have to understand that Mac is far more stable than windows by far but this is because of there strong back end which is why OSx the X standing for Unix makes it such a solid dependable base system. Now I am not a programmer nor an expert but I imagine that drivers that work under unix and linux like environments would work under OSX but there is alot to do to get to work I am not sure but I will be experimenting soon I hope
But now back to the real issues Windows is popular because of its software that it has lol thats cause the developers design it for the majority but as of late you see cross platform applications that run on both windows and mac and Linux/Unix systems also now you see more games being ported to mac now this is cause of a demand and the software developers of those games have the resources to meet this since they are big developers and make huge profit from the windows based users out there they can afford a few more programmers to port app and games to mac to maintain a status cwow with the big guns.. remember not so long ago we had OS2 from IBM well what happen its down to a small unknown select tight group of private developers now and banks like TD still use this os but there atms and stuff run on linux
Now if you want to see Mac on PC bug the hardware manufactures to make drivers and support Mac until we as a community Stand up and say NO more being told how to do things by certain beurocrats and other communist like people that make us do what they want by limiting our options.
If you had to choices to make money or stuggle what is your choice until we can convince and support others into staning up and saying we are not going to take it then Live with the choice you make.

Hi
I succeed by installing the hacked Leopard in my Dell xps M1210. Just I have to try the installation three times before realizing I need to select some kernel. Then just downhill walking. Internet, sound, other partitions recognized. By the way I have Mandriva 2008.0′ and xubuntu also installed in the laptop.
I think that this is a good way to probe if I really want/need to buy a real mac. Thanks for this opportunity and great hack.

I am reading and reading and know what:? I am nor PC fanatic neither Mac one. I’ve been getting into Macs for some long time and really wanted to buy one but then I started thinking… What I get is MacOS, true. It is nice. Nonetheless the hardware offered is not sth special. I like the design, it is slim but what bothered me was passive cooling system. New Macbooks Pro are better in this case but they do not offer decent mate screen. Eventually I decided to get Dell Precision M4400. Why? 4 USB ports, e-sata, pro video card, fast hard-drive. Ok it is not as slim as Mac and it does not have MacOS but I paid less money for a MOBILE WORKSTATION with LED mate screen and very powerful config. Unfortunately money counts. Moreover I came to conclusion that many things I need I can do with this bad Windows which if You don’t mess up with (all suspicious websites) and install stuff clever way it may work pretty fine. Thus if You cool down try to think over what You really need and a fanatism is not a good advisor. Yes, I like the quality. That is why I went for this Dell I mentioned and saved 1000$.

OsX Hacker (JIOPO)
I will release this simple Mac Os X86 called JIOPO next week. We are hacking the leopard OSX for years (when osx just started). We are not the crappy versions which released theirs just the day after the release. We spend over 100000 hours and finally we got this easy to use version. Unlike others, this one does not need codes or other damn shit. You only insert the DVD and then it will install by itself. Just like installing WIndows XP but more simple. We did not modify anything on the Mac Os Leopard DVD released by Apples.
please email me for more information

Im one of the converts from pc to mac and honestly these people dont have a clue what os x is really like. They wouldnt be posting these sad ignorant comments if they did. PC’s nowadays are getting better by the day but the OS makes all the difference. Mac are more on the posh side of things but they REALLY WORK!

You should look at everything for it’s face value. It can all be hacked. If you think different then, well I wont go there. You need to decide what flavor you like. It comes down to personal preference. The OS are now running with same processors for the most part. Makes no dif. to me I like both. Have fun and mix your flavors the way you like them. It is to simple to think that PC are hacking the bios. What’s up with that when the processors are the same. I guess I have a classic that is still running a RISC process or is it dinosaur. Good thing I gave it away for free or should I have kept it as classic. To bad that users have to hack the bios to run MAC OS. Especially since they run the same processors . Not like in the past. Oh well. Just my two cents. Still it might of been nice to keep around.

Really FX? I think you’re full of it.
Obviously you know NOTHING about Mac OSX, but you like to comment like you do. I happen to use both OSs and prefer Macs. Try to stay current on your Mac compatible software.
For your information, Internet Explorer is a DEAD BROWSER on Macs. The last version was 5.0 and was released in 2003! Microsloth has dropped support for it ever since Apple annouced Safari.
I highly doubt any Mac users still use it since most websites won’t work — i.e. any websites that use web 2.0 standards, which is most of them nowadays. Most Mac users use Safari, Firefox, or Opera, just so you know.

Wow, very cool. I just got a mac laptop and have a PC desktop so this may come in handy.
Maybe this will help PC sales since many don’t want Vista.

You know whats really retarded, Microsoft said, sure, “Okay! you guys can run Windows on your Macs, but Mac cant say, “Okay, since you let us run Windows on our computers we will let you run OS X on your computers!” I think Windows should drop compatibility until Mac allows OS X on PCs. That’s completely unfair.

YODAMAN.
I read your comment. The reality is that Apple do not wish to compete with Microsoft. Steve Jobs has said that time and time again. The reason I believe (judging from what I have read and seen) that Apple don’t put OS X on any PC (remember they did clone for a while, google PowerComputing) is they don’t wish to run down the same road as Windows with the countless compatibility issues. Apple build a machine and make it work with OS X using a few different brands and types of products to keep it simple. OS X and Linux are work for the hardware not the other way around. OS X works seamlessly whereas Linux as good as it is has some compatibility issues.
As for Windows.
Well….

I put Leopard on my Lenovo S10 Notebook. I have a legit copy of Leopard on hand though. So it’ not an issue of illegality at this point. They just simply DO NOT make a mac with a 10.2″ screen for 400 dollars. Buying a computer simply for the OS is stupid. Buying a MAC is stupid. Buying an OS is fine though.
I do not see you MAC guys crying over bootcamp….

the fact is apple make a better operating system apple systems in my experience (7Yrs) seem to stay fresh as the day they came from the box. pcs tend to get sluggish no matter the quailty of hardware. on macs you can do pretty much everything. on windows you find yourself having to upgrade your computer as new programs come up whereas macs run new programs on factory shipped systems without comprimise of speed and so on the reason being apple and other apple developers build for the machine. the good thing about apple is there is no base model except maybe for the mac mini all apple machines are top of the line apple offer great customer service and support and are always helpful (have you ever tried speaking to m$ or a pc manufacturer you might as well speak to a brick wall or carry on if you like being spoken to like a retard.

How many of you have to comment one the same thing over and over again in here, it should be enough with one “story” of why apple aren’t selling their OS to PC-owners. I realy needed to get that off my chest!!!

To be honest, Macs truley fail. Everyone thinks they are the best, that they’re virus free. That is total BS, if memory serves my correct, the very first computer virus was written for a Macintosh, 25years ago, on the 26th of January. coming up to it’s 26th birthday, so why would Apple miss-lead people to believe that their software/hardware is fully protected.
Apple have done what most politicians have done, talked and BSed their way into “the hot seat.” Mac users tend to be retards that got infect on Windows because they failed to notice their Virus Protector, flashing the fuck in the bottom right corner going “DON’T OPEN THAT YOU FUCKTARD! IT’S A VIRUS!” So they blame Windows for their own stupidty.
Safari has so many problems it is not funny. The amount of back-doors you can use to get through it is just incredible. You will also notice that the FireFox version for Macs runs slower then Safari, this is because Apple want you to use their own products.
BTW, Macs get viruses via video codecs and once inside your laptop/desktop, they act the same like any old virus. Hijack your browser, phish you, destroy files, you know the lot. So therefore they are not secure. The reason why they didn’t have viruses for a long time is because on a small amount of users used Macs and hackers/crackers/programmers thought “Why bother only getting 10% of computer uses when we can still get 70% of PC users and why bother having to re-write a new virus for a new computer?” It was just not worth it until people started to.
Another hint guys: OSx is devolped of Unix and practically steals the GUI of a lot of Linux distros.
P.S: I own a Macbook, I got it for the light weight, but I wiped all the software off it and put Windows XP on it and Linux redhat and Bluecat. I barely use it and am going to sell it.
PCs are the way to go. Apple can’t get their own users so they’ve got to make fun of PC users when PCs are actually 1000x better then Macs.

Hmm, Apple on a PC. Wasn’t Steve Jobs the one that had the original idea for a “windows” system? I’m not going to say that they will never release a PC version, they may. In theory, if Mac OS X is written on top of a Linux kernal, all device drivers should work with no extra installation needed. That has been my experience with Linux distros in the past. So would they really need to support all the hardware out there? No. The hardware manufacturers that build pc-compliant hardware would have to start building either hybrid or Mac compliant hardware. This is doable, but will be a rather expensive task. This OS X hack seems nice, real nice. And in my opinion, the stability of the operating system doesn’t come from the hardware, it comes from the platform they decided to build on. So with that being said, hack away if you can, or get PearPC, a PowerPC emulator if you really want to run OS X on your PC. That’s the approach I’m going to take….

huh………….. mac is all about the software, its all about the Operating System, since the birth of the OS only two viruses that i know was out there, and graphics is awesome, the application the visual look everything is superb, and for them to make a gr8 profit out of such a superb Os it to get a unique system which can only run the Mac OS, think about what had happen to XP, Vista, Why buy a genuine software when its available for download, and see even when mac OS works in mac, its too available for download so if they make a version on Leopard for PC, who will buy the mac, actually PC Hardware is unbeatable compared to Mac, PC can be upgraded for you need. so no ones gonna buy a Mac trust me i worked in Apple inc for 5 and we have also created a PC version years and its files as working and highly confidential. and iv stolen the software when i gave up and i’m trying to forge the Mac OS for PC, keep in touch call +960 762 2201

I believe the reason that apple doesn’t want to release their operating system for PCs is because everyone would just steal it and no one would by their computers anymore. So if no one buys their operating system and no one buys their computers, they wouldn’t make any money at all. If anything, PC companies would make more money because everyone would by their computers and install stolen copies of apple’s os on them.

If you don’t know there is a program called cryptload. You can upload the files on rapidshare and using cryptload you can create a package that will conatin the rapidshare links encrypted. This way you can give us the cryptload file and we can download the rapidshare files without knowing the addresses.
Could you do it and let us download from rapidshare instead of torrent?
Thanks

and ppl please realize mac is making money not giving out their software but leeting the opposition software abailable for their hardware wich both pisses off bill gates and gets them more profits since if tht person does not like os x just buy or get a copy of microsoft shyt pop it in their mac and boom they also have windows not reliable software but compatible and when they want a reliable software just restart ur mac and bootcamp osx and boom the got reliability see they also take advantage of it the dot give but get that is one of the main rules of marketing if u cant beat em join em

Steve Jobs once quoted someone. He said, “if you want to be serious about software, you have to be serious about hardware.”
Apple designed OS X to work with Mac hardware and that is just the way it is. Even if you go through a back door and get Leopard to work, it wont be as stable as it would be on a Mac.

Well personally im not amazed this can be done since Macs are nothing more than PC’s running a different OS (in a fancy dress). That being said I decided to try this for the mere spectacle i gotta say it runs perfectly fine on my Centrino2 Duo 2.6 ghz with 4 gb of ram and a Intel hd accelerated graphics card. The only thing i can’t get to work is my blue tooth drivers.. I also managed to install this using a dual boot.. it’s really not that hard just create a separate clean partition from windows. Currently running Vista, XP, Linux and now Mac OSX Leopard. Pretty cool if you ask me.. i have two 500 gb ata drives.. Four OS half the price of of an Equivalent Mac computer.. Gotta love the hackers..
