Hack Attack : Install Leopard on your PC in 3 easy steps!

Update : 2 : If you are looking for a guide to Dual Boot Windows Vista and Mac OSX Leopard, please follow this guide Hack Attack : Dual Boot Leopard and Windows Vista. The Dual Boot Guide is a comprehensive guide and it should work for most of you with a little bit of hard work.

Update : 1 : There is a newer version of this Hack that you might want to check out. Its much more simpler and can be done by almost everyone. The newer hack also includes Mac OSX 10.5.1 so please check out Hack Attack : Install Leopard On your PC in Just One Step.

Mac OSX Leopard

Well its been only a day since the Mac OSX Leopard was released officially by Apple and the hackers have managed to create a patched DVD that everyone like you and me can use to install Leopard on PC’s without having to buy a Mac. Please note the tutorial that I am going to post is still experimental and things might not work the right way simply because it is still early days in hacking Leopard to work on PC’s. Well if you don’t mind your PC getting screwed then go ahead and try out this tutorial.

Make sure you backup all important data before you proceed. Here are the things that you will need before Install Leopard on your PC…

  • The Patched DVD Image
  • The zip file containing the patch
  • One pen drive or USB Flash Drive formatted as FAT32

Well once you have all these you can go ahead and Install Leopard..

Step 1. Getting things ready

  • Burn the DVD Image onto a Single Layer DVD-R using a software like Nero.
  • Format the USB Flash Drive and the drive label should be “Patcher” without the quotes. Please note it has to be “Patcher” only and nothing else for the patch to work when we apply it later.
  • Extract the Zip file and put its contents into the USB Flash Drive.
  • Now your USB Drive should contain a folder called “files”, if it doesn’t then check to see where you have gone wrong.

Step 2. Installing Leopard

  • Now that you have the Patched DVD with you, you can now install Leopard. Pop in the DVD into the drive and boot into it by pressing F12 at the BIOS Prompt.
  • Boot into the DVD and the installer should now load. It take a while though, so be patient.
  • Select your Language and make sure you select Customize and you need to deselect all the packages that are displayed.
  • Leopard will now install. This can take a while, so go grab yourself a coffee.
  • It will ask you to Reboot, so go ahead and Reboot. Before rebooting make sure that USB Flash Drive is connected to the PC.

Step 3. Patching Leopard

  • Now that you have got Leopard installed, you need to patch it. Before we do that Boot into the Leopard DVD like the way you did before.
  • Wait for the Darwin Bootloader to load. Once it loads up press F8. You should now see a prompt. Type -s and hit enter. The DVD will now load in Verbose mode. Watch for any errors. It should load without a problem because you have already installed Leopard.
  • Once the setup is loaded select your Language. Once done you should now be seeing the Welcome Screen. Once there navigate to Utilities-Terminal.
  • Once the terminal loads up, you now need to browse to your USB Drive, so follow the steps below, typing it exactly as it appears below in the Terminal.

In the command line type the following as they appear here

    cd ..
    cd ..
    cd Volumes
    cd Patcher
    cd files

Notice the space between cd and the 2 dots.

  • Now its the time to run the patcher to make sure Leopard will work on your PC. Type the following into the Terminal.

    ./9a581PostPatch.sh

  • The Patch should now run. You can answer Yes while removing the ACPUPowerManagement.kext
  • After the Script is done, you should now be able to Boot into Leopard after you restart.

Step 4. Congratulations! You’ve done the Impossible!

Well that was it. Please note this has not been extensively tested, so most of your Hardware like Sound, Network may not work. If something goes wrong for you or you want to help us, then please join the discussion over at OSX86Scene. If you noticed I haven’t posted the links to the Torrent that contains the DVD image and the zip. Well I haven’t posted them because I am sure the lawyers over at Apple are going to sue the hell out of me. If you wondering where you can find them, then head over to Demonoid and search for it.

Well here are few screenshots by Mac.nub over at the forums who could get Leopard working on his system.

LeopardLeopard

Some Updates and Clarifications :

  • This Hack works on Intel PC’s with atleast SSE3
  • You need to format your Leopard Partition to HFS+
  • Make Sure you install Leopard on MBR and not GUID or it won’t boot.
  • More Patched DVD’s from Uphuck, Netkas is in the works so it would be better if you wait for the polished releases to come out.

  1. wow…
    i didn’t know that was even possible….
    and damn quick….

  2. @Martin : It sure was. Nothing in this world is impossible is it… Expect more versions Of Leopard to come in the future that will be much more easier to install on your PC. Things are just getting started now..

  3. YodaMouse

Wow. I think it’s so idiotic that OSX isn’t available for PC by design. It is so typical for industry types to try to wish the problem away, and simply ignore a legitimate user demand. If Apple truly wants to compete against M$, why the hell not make a PC version?

The only thing I can think of is a back-door deal that allows Apple to survive regardless of the market’s state while M$ avoids another antitrust lawsuit.

I hope people hack the hell out of it!!!

  4. Great work! The speed of the internet :) That wasn’t even a full day!

  5. @YODAMOUSE, I would be very happy if Apple would release a PC version of OS X in the future. But that would have the problem of Mass Adoption and that would lead to problems with the security of OS X. I feel its better being an elite OS.

@OB81, Yeah I know.. The developers over OSX86 are working very hard indeed. Expect more refined releases in the future. This is just the beginning.

  6. seaman

In fact,it was more than one day BEFORE release, that many of us run it on a PC.
And Apple will not release a PC version because it can not support it.There is a lot of diferent hardware in PC’s and MacOS is not ready for that. They only have drivers for few devices, parts.
Supporting lots of hardware will shatter the “well known stability” of MacOS.

  7. Hessel

Apparently you have to have OSX (Tiger) already running on your PC.

  8. Noob

    Hey,
What kind of format do you use for the hard drive? HFS+? And what software allow these kind of format?

  9. Pesqair

True. Apple will never release a PC version of OS X. The whole point of Apple and OS X is its stability. This is possible because Apple knows what it puts on their machines inside out.

  10. josh

apple does not offer a PC version of OS X for very obvious reasons — they make their money off hardware, not software.

if they give you their operating system.. they only make a measly $129 off the people who actually pay for it instead of steal it.

instead, they make several thousand off people to buy macs.

  11. Jordan

Why the hell would anyone want to install a piece of crap software on their pc? I say F**** mac and hail windows XP

  12. @karthik RE: the problem of Mass Adoption
So are you implying that OS X is secure because of the lower market share than Windows? If so this mindset is entirely off base as this type of thinking would imply that NeXt or BeOS would be even MORE secure than OS X. An operating systems security is NOT tied to its marketshare. HOWEVER attempts to hack it will increase but these attempts will only be successful IF the OS is insecure.

Much like the house in the woods… just because it’s never been broken into because nobody is around makes the door lock better than the one in the city that has a break-in attempt every night

Either OS X is secure or it’s not additional marketshare will NOT make a difference. Just maybe speedup finding the problems.

  13. Wow!! That is amazing! Can’t wait to install it on my lenovo laptop…just to see how it looks. Even though I hate mac…this could be a fun experience.

    HAHA :)

    Btw: Visit http://www.usonlinefreegames.com
Cool site with great arcade games.

  14. FooManChew

“I think it’s so idiotic that OSX isn’t available for PC by design”

They can’t afford to support it. Think about the diversity of hardware on PCs. By “locking” their OS to a very specifically chosen subset of the available PC hardware, they don’t have to worry about somebody that just bought a $200 emachine piece of crap where every shortcut available has been taken in the hardware, with one-off chipsets that “sorta” match a published specs, etc.

So, really, it’s not idiotic at all.

  15. KC

    @SEAMAN:

That is such total BS. First off, it’s not Apple’s job to support eighty bajillion pieces of hardware. Second, if they released a version of OS X for beige box PCs, (discounting the fact that it would cut into their hardware sales, though as badly as some would think) the wave of adoption that would follow would encourage hardware makers that don’t already provide OS X drivers to do so.

Yes, releasing OS X for beige boxes would cut into Apple hardware sales. But the margins on hardware are crap to begin with, especially compared to the margins on software, and the sales of OS X for beige boxes would more than make up for lost hardware sales.

I fully believe that Apple realizes this, and that they’re going to do it eventually. Why? Because Steve Jobs says they aren’t. Recall that this is the same guy who spent years touting the superiority of PowerPC over x86, and claimed that video support on the iPod wasn’t going to happen.

Apple is not a stupid company; with their market share increasing daily, and their coffers stuffed with cash, they have to know that very, very soon they will have the ability to give Microsoft something very, very big to worry over.

  16. Seemen

Does anyone have the specs of a PC that will be able to run OSX smooth?

  17. JS

    Wow, that was fast :)

  18. Troy Mc

The reason Apple has not yet and will never release a version of OSX for generic PC’s is that they are a hardware company. They are not a software company. They develop OSX only to push their hardware.

They would shoot themselves in the face if they were to sell OSX in a state that could be installed by default on any PC. The average user who wants to run OSX on a regular PC would likely not pay for it anyway. Most home users who actually install their own OS pirate it these days.

The majority of legitimate Windows installs out there were done by an OEM.

Apple stands to lose more than they could gain from selling OSX for regular PC’s.

They are in the game to make money, not satisfy people who currently don’t agree with their business model. If you want to run a stable copy of OSX, you will buy a Mac. Many more people are doing this all the time. This is a profitable situation for Apple.

    Why would they kill it?

  19. Jon

There are two reasons why there will likely never be a PC release of OS X. One is old, one is new.

First, Apple got burned by depending on third party applications in the very early years of the mac. The result was Windows, and slow or no development of Office for the mac. Microsoft wanted them to make the Mac System for the Intel system, Apple said no, and, well, the rest is history. Whether that institutional memory should have any effect on their decision making now or not, it does.

Second, Apple makes pretty decent profits on hardware. (In fact, they make more profits than Microsoft excluding their monopoly Windows and Office) and is a much smaller company.

If you haven’t seen the news, their formula seems to be working. Their profits are up, their market share, especially among laptops is up, so, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Just from a practical point of view, having to support less hardware makes it easier for the OS to be stable.

Having said that, I’ve run 10.4 on a PC and if it had better drivers, it would have been a great machine.

  20. Counting the minutes until the Apple Cease and Desist Letters get mailed, not that it will really do any good.

  21. Apple has never been an OS (Software) company like Microsoft. With all the components manufacturers would still need to produce machines with the proper components.

  22. Heh, you stole my Installation Screenshots!
    Anyhow, nice article.

    ~mac.nub

  23. Joe Schmoe

Heh, “elite OS” — more like “Elitist OS.” Apple sucks because of the fanboys.

  24. Sish

    @Karthik
Security through Obscurity is complete nonsense. If OSX is as secure as we all know it is, the number of people using it should have little to no effect.
The whole windows is insecure because so many use it (and is thus a hacker magnet) argument is just a line windows users/devs give to justify its insecurities.

People of other OS’s should not fall into that line of thinking because it is just a FUD trap.

  25. Whoever

    @seaman

Exactly. Apple is a hardware company. They make software only so people will buy their hardware. End result - they won’t ever support OSX on anything else. But i betcha they don’t get too upset about people porting it if they buy a copy first. If it works like crap because of driver issues, but people otherwise like it, they might be inspired to buy a Mac. And that should make Cupertino happy.

  26. jaret

the reason why apple doesn’t sell a pc version of osx is because it makes it’s money off of hardware sales rather than software sales. if they released leopard for pc, apple would go out of business because people would buy the cheap pc hardware and just put apple’s software on it, rather than buying apple’s expensive computers just to have osx

  27. Yoh

    @YodaMouse

Read up on the history of MS and how they became the dominant OS. In short, they let people pirate Windows and that resulted in a huge, huge market share slice. Apple is very smart in this area and are following the same tactic. They dont officially support OSX on x86, but they don’t make it hard to install on x86 either, thereby gaining a foothold in the PC world for free. If they released a commercial version of OSX for PCs at this stage, they’d have to compete with MS…and no one that has competed with MS for the PC desktop has survived. Apple is just taking the intelligent road to desktop dominance.

  28. Kelli

In fact, if Windows only had to run on 7 or 8 different machines, all with fixed known base configurations, expandable only by USB or 1394, it would probably be a lot more stable than it is.

Mac OS X is already a lot less stable on Mac Pros for the very reason that the number of possible system configurations is much greater, since you can get into the machine and change things, unlike with any other model of Mac.

  29. I see a step four :(

  30. Ed

Yodamouse, just becuase people want something of Apple doesnt mean they are obliged to provide it.

And Apple arent competing with Microsoft, they are doing their own thing in the same market as Dell, HP, IBM AND Microsoft.

Maybe one day OS X will be supported on PCs but at that time, Apple will have to be the biggest company in computer hardware AND software to make it work like it does now for all its customers.

  31. DAN

If Apple would do it themself and allow a version to run on PC, this would be a serious treat to MS. Not to forget a major money cow…. But I guess they still don’t get it and are too greedy so they want the software and hardware sale. History has prooven that software pays more than hardware.

  32. Tmemphis

I’ve read this a couple of time and I don’t understand where you get the zip file containing the patch. Could someone clarify this for me. or post the link. Thank you in advance

  33. Just nice!

  34. Azrael

    @KARTHIK KASTURY

Regarding your comment about ‘mass adoption’ bringing security issues to the table… You’re aware that OS X not being able to hold itself if it was mass adopted is an actually huge issue? Security by obscurity isn’t a good thing. Never was, never gonna be.

  35. IPv6Freely

Why not just get a mac?

  36. Jayson Barclay

Yes! This is right up my alley. I thought leopard was proprietary, not open source, Imagine my surprise. I will download it for my PC immediately. Apple will never know! My anonymity remains intact!

  37. If you want Leopard so bad, just buy a MAC and get full support.

  38. ChaOS

Very good work guys! (and speedy too!)

I too wish OSX would one day grace the PC market, but we all know how many drivers would need to be rewritten for OSX so I don’t see it happening (officially).

    Keep up the excellent work!

  39. JVW

Also, keep in mind, Apple makes most of its money from selling hardware (2k-5k) not software ($129) so it’s not in their best interest to make this OS available for PCs–while it would create more “mind share”, it wouldn’t necessarily move more Apple hardware (and may actually decrease their hardware sales–anyone remember the shortlived Apple clones?).

  40. shen

“And Apple will not release a PC version because it can not support it.”

no, Apple will not release a PC version because they are a hardware company, the software is made to sell the hardware. if they released a PC version they would have to up the price enough to make up the difference of not selling the hardware.

in short, there is no PC version because it would ruin the company.

stability is not the issue. Linux is also incredibly stable and also has a driver shortage. The Mac OS doesn’t have to be ready for different hardware, the hardware makers have to stop using windows poor design as a crutch for their shoddy drivers.

please, if you know nothing about OS design, don’t tell us about it.

  41. Done it !!
A nice DIY.. some detailed information may be more helpful

  42. fX

Why anyone would want to do this is completely beyond me. Sure, it’s illegal… but that’s not why I don’t get it.

Why doesn’t Apple release a version for PCs… hmmm. It could be that they figure people will pirate it like Windows (surely, why not? If you do what this article suggests, since it’s already illegal, why would you buy Leopard to do this?). Could be an inability to support more than 3-4% of the “PC userbase” (customer service/tech support). Could be they make all their money on selling overpriced crap? Could be they can lack support for a shit ton of hardware, since they only need drivers for hardware they sell. But ultimately it seems it would make it super-duper-uncool to those nazi-like Mac-fanatics.
Oh, another one, they realize that selling an OS seperate from the machine is fucking stupid! Historically retail OS boxes don’t sell well, OEMs that come with a machine is where they’d make money. But then they’d have to let other PC makers put OSX on their machines. But that would again make Macs super-duper-uncool to the nazi-like mac-fanatics.

    Tangents anyone? Sure!

What really makes Bill cream his pants is all the Mac users that pretty much exclusively use the MS Office suite… except they do it on a Mac. Oh sure, there’s iTunes! Maybe they even use Safari if they’re a few bits short of a byte.

But alas, what do I see Mac users running? Internet Explorer! Outlook, Excel, Word…. And these are people who prefer using Macs strongly over a PC. I just don’t get it. But I still consider these types of users a few bits short of a byte.

I think the biggest preference comes from the short-cuts people become familar with. Then the niche group of Audio/Visual users that haven’t realized PCs can do anything A/V a Mac has been able to do for well over a decade.

I need to get me one of those Mac mice with the ball instead of wheel. Those are nice. Too bad it costs over $50 for a damn mouse. And it’ll probably explode when I attach it to my Windows 2000 machine. Anyone got unlock software for Mac mice? j/k

  43. bob

Apple won’t release a PC version of it’s OS because PC users are not as forgiving as Apple fanboys, and because it won’t take long for all the holes to start doing appearing and for message board posters to start adapting Mr Jobs’ name to $teve Job$ :D

  44. Terrapin

Not good. Not good at all.

  45. Matthew

Can I use computer with Athlon64 and GeForce for this?

  46. mysteryfishnsea

More importantly, Apple wants to control the complete experience of its customers end-to-end. They place a huge emphasis on interoperability within their entire product line. If they were to license OSX, then they’d lose that control, which is arguably the greatest reason that OSX works so well.

And they have plenty of drivers — thank you open source. They’re better supported, and are far more stable than the useless proprietary crap that Windows makes you put up with.

  47. Jawsh

    Seaman,
Its the lack of drivers and such that keeps it nice and speedy on apple hardware because they can strip down the kernel so much.

  48. So, whats the general compatibility required to getting a PC system running on OSX leopard? a very intel based system? or do hackers tend to work on other drivers (realtek, etc?) or is it just best to go with a very intel based board (audio, NIC, etc) and just be done with it?

  49. Alex

    Oh get over yourselves.
You want a Mac, go buy one. Simple, FFS.
The well known stability comes from precisely that - Mac OS knows the hardware it’s running on. Big whoop.

  50. Pt

the main problem with officially releasing OS X for pc market, is they would have to come up with a million drivers for all the crappy Gateways, Emachines, or whatever other manufacturer uses substandard parts, for the last 10 years, to please people, people who believe their 8 year old computer is still top of the line.

think of all the driver complains windows has, i think it would translate to OSX on pc toooooooooo….. just my thought.

  51. Pt

i guess seaman just kinda said that,,, i skipped his comment before posting

  52. NO WAI HAX0RZ !

  53. Is there anyway to partition this and run vista on the same computer?

  54. Arksyne

The reason that Apple isn’t going to release a generic x86 OS X (at least, any time soon) is drivers. They know, and include in the installation, the drivers required for ALL Apple hardware. Imagine all of sudden having to support the bizarre range of things people have inside their Windows boxes. You’d have Window fanboys lining up to talk about how unstable the Mac OS is, compared to Windows…which has never had, you know driver issues. Windows would be rock-solid stable too if Microsoft made their own computers.

  55. Already!!!

  56. Jerry

“Wow. I think it’s so idiotic that OSX isn’t available for PC by design”

That’s just it. With the exception of how they boot, a Mac is just an Apple branded PC. The important hardware is the same. The whole Mac vs. PC dichotomy is artificial. Apple makes their money by building a great OS and tying it to their boutique hardware. If you want the OS, you have to buy a Mac (in theory). The main problem with that is that people like the OS but not everyone wants to buy a premium case and mobile parts. Also, with the smaller hardware base, there are only legit drivers for those parts that are used in Apple computers. If someone wants to get another piece of hardware working, they would have to write a driver or a wrapper to make their hardware work under OSX. Depending on what parts are in your non-Apple PC, you will have better or worse luck getting devices to work. Since Windows is designed to run on a large hardware base, there are many more Windows drivers available. One problem with this is that having a larger hardware base means thousands of possible configurations and higher chance of instability is the price for your hardware freedom.

  57. Ed

perhaps a vm version of it ? ;-)

  58. Yeah, but where the hell is the patched DVD image, just name the site at least for those less computer literates to be able to get it.

  59. Dan

Apple doesn’t release a PC version because they can’t support it. They don’t release a PC version because if they did, it could be the end to their laptop and desktop lines. PC vendors would be quick to develop drivers (as they were with Vista) for their products, thus returning stability to the OS. Let us not forget that Apple frequently releases buggy models that are victims to frequent system crashes (I know, I have one). The only way Apple laptop and desktops would be able to survive is to quit overcharging consumers and slash prices in order to compete with other hardware manufacturers.

  60. Jared

In the OSX86 thread, it seemed that you needed to have Tiger already installed on your machine for this work. Is this the case? If I have only Windows XP on my machine right now, can I create a blank partition and have Leopard install onto that? If so, how do I make the dual-boot work?

  61. andrew514

very interesting and very soon, yet another slap in the face to lil steve just like appletv hack and iphone unlock. Hail to windows xp, hail to the technoviking, fcuk vista, oublii mac.

  62. ThatGuy

    cd ..
    cd ..
    cd Volumes
    cd Patcher
    cd files

    Sure, or just cd ../../Volumes/Patcher/files

    ./9a581PostPatch.sh
I assume you would need to chmod +x to make it executable that way.
    sh 9a581PostPatch.sh should work otherwise.
Shell scripts “normally” don’t execute via a perl command.

Having said all that though, thanks for the how-to.
You’ve done a fine job of taking a difficult subject and making it easy. Kudos to you! :)

  63. I’ve made a Spanish translation of this tutorial; check it at unblogged.net

  64. ….more Leopard/Vista debates, wonderful. I say congrats to the hacker who made this possible, and fuck off to the idiotic one minded people who think one operating system is better than the other. There so different down to the core language level you can’t really compare them anyway.

  65. Ryan with questions

Hey, i have a question about leopard on my PC. If i were to do this switch-a-roo for my PC can i have both windows XP and Leopard on my computer. For example: can i boot my computer up two ways, one with leopard if i wish and one with xp if i wish? if so can i have all my saved shit on my XP side or vis versa?
    Thanks in advanced,
    -Ryan

  66. Ryan with questions

Uhh can i have XP and leopard on my PC at once. Can i boot my computer up both ways?

  67. @Ryan : No not now atleast. This hack will work only if you use Leopard only.. Wait for sometime and you should see better hacks coming..

  68. $K1LL$

Same here..Those who knock it probably cant get it to work on their P2 500MHz Hp machines. You should stay with XP…Bill needs your help..

  69. solid snake

I don’t its going to work!!!

  70. @Andrew

I disagree with any statement saying Apple is a “Hardware” company. Apple is a technology company. All hardware requires software to be functional and Apples software is the reason people buy Apple hardware. Nobody would buy a Mac if it were not for the top notch software products they produce.. It’s nonsense to say that Apple is a hardware company because in the computer / electronics business sector hardware is nothing but an iBrick without software. So IMHO Apple is just as much a software company, just one that wants to be in control of the devices that run it’s software.

  71. sunnyboy

All pirating is WRONG. It might not seem like stealing, but it sure is. You wouldn’t go into the apple store and steal a copy of Leopard, what makes people think they can download it? Oh well, what can I say, karma catches up to those that do wrong. Everyone’s in the game to make money, why screw apple for giving us a great product? Oh well, what can I say, karma catches up to those that do wrong.

  72. shdwsclan

ACTUALLY, it took 2 weeks to patch leopard….

Leopard was released….or should I say, shipped/leaked two weeks before the official release. It made it onto the internet that day…

  73. Jake

Does this work with AMD CPU’s or strictly Intel chips?

  74. McAllister

ok, so i’ve seen a bunch of you people saying things like ” the only way Apple can ever hope to compete with Microsoft…” but here’s the funny thing dumbasses… When last I checked Apple is worth over 4 times Microsoft. Microsoft (MSFT) closed at $35.03/share today (28 Oct), while Apple (AAPL) closed at $184.70/share. Granted, the iPhone has significantly helped Apple. That point made…

The two company’s aren’t even in truly in competition (Zune and iPod aside). Microsoft creates primarily office and os software. Apple creates computers and the operating system that runs their hardware it would be like saying Coca Cola is better than the company that provides most of the sugar syrup to the soft drink industry.

  75. Martin

A torrent has been uploaded here with the files needed. Enjoy!

    http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/1403802/6811694/

  76. Brent

Stop saying that Apple is a hardware company and not a software company. It’s just asinine to say that. Apple is above all things a software company. Their BUSINESS MODEL, however, is to sell the hardware that runs their software. They believe that anyone who is truly passionate about building software has to build their own hardware too.

  77. Brent

    @MCALLISTER

Don’t talk about the stock market unless you know what your talking about. The share price of a given company’s stock cannot be directly compared to the price of another company’s. Take the share price and multiply it by the total number of shares and you’ll see your mistake.

  78. I believe that Apple is a technology company and not a company that exclusively sells hardware or software. As far as i know Steve Jobs prefers to have his software run on trusted hardware manufactured by Apple itself.

The only reason you will see Mac OS coming on to PC will be when Apple will be compelled to do so, like when it happened when Safari and iTunes came to windows.

Apple is indeed a hardware company and a software company and an entertainment company. Maybe soon to be a label/publisher.

An Apple computer will run 10.5 and Win *. Sweet!!

I still use my PC to convert audio and video to a format that will work on my Apple computer and Nano.

I have as many computers as I want to have. Maybe some night I will open a bottle of Pinot Noir, Roll a fatty and see if I can boot Leopard on a Dell or something else that would be cool.

This whole horses are better than trucks thing really depends if you are on pavement or on grass. I prefer to have both.

Sometimes it is fun to drive the truck into a little bit of dirt.
Sometimes it is fun to ride the horse into town.

You should be careful about pledging your loyalty to anything. Especially if that thing has stockholders and a marketing department.

Things do change. The revolution will end yet again we will still have choices I hope.

I really never liked Linux but I am happy that it still is an option.

If the truck (MS) and the horse (Apple) both decide they don’t want to play someday then walking (Linux) will absolutely still be an option.

It may hurt like hell for a while but won’t sitting in front of a truck or behind a horse hurt worse?

….I do own an Intel Apple and a AMD PC. My horse has a truck in it?

I use Linux for cracking wep.

I did not buy anything from the open source community. If I was to pay money for software they would be the first to know.

Trust nothing. Try everything. Be creative and have fun. When you are dead you will be visited as often as you visit your dead. You will be missed as many minutes per day as you miss your lost.

Change things around. Try every new way that you want. These operating systems did not come out of a vacuum. Mutation, imitation and evolution are the best things that ever happened to you or them.

Just one opinion. Get a tattoo if you are really sure.

Thanks for the guide. However, there is some essential info missing: what chipsets (southbridge) are supported? Which video cards?? The forums for installing 10.4 are full of examples of motherboards and video cards that won’t work.

For ex: will Leopard boot on a mobo with an Intel 965 chipset ????

  81. Chad Zeluff

The point of running a Mac is to have an operating system that works wonderfully with the Apple hardware. By installing this on a PC, you’re just one step closer to running a crash-prone operating system like Windows…well, ok, you’re still ALOT more secure since you have a UNIX base and a microkernel, but that’s another forum thread ;)

  82. Tofino

    to ryan with questions:

‘Uhh can i have XP and leopard on my PC at once. Can i boot my computer up both ways?’

of course you can… as long as your personal computer is a current mac…

  83. ProTechGuy

@ about 20 or so different people who said something to the effect of: “Apple is a hardware company; if they sell OSX for PCs then it’ll ruin the company”:

    What?

Have you ever heard of something called… an iPod? an iPhone? a little thing called Final Cut Pro? or Logic Studio? Hmm. I mean, really, it’s not cheaper to make an iPod than a computer… and they don’t sell 100X more of these products than they do computers… and they don’t make a killing off of every iPhone sold AND the actual 2-year agreement…. [sarcasm]

Selling OSX for use on PCs would not ruin the company. Quite to the contrary.

And, by the way… Apple is a hardware company selling overpriced crap? I seem to recall two programs that were industry standards in their respective fields [Avid, Pro Tools], and Apple made SOFTWARE that was so full-featured and ridiculously low priced compared to those two programs that it FORCED Avid and Pro Tools to DRASTICALLY lower their prices.

P.S.~ According to the Evil Steve Jobs, Apple is a software company. [See D5: All Things Digital 2007]

  84. vin

Is Apple a hardware company or a software company?

    The answer is : Both.

And Apple doesn’t only sell Macs and its OS but don’t forget they make money through iTunes Music Store too. Moreover, Apple has just launched its WiFi Music Store. What a business.

Imagine how much money they made with these:

    iPod/iPhone + iTunes = $$$$

    MacBook/iMac/MacPro + OS + .Mac + iWork = $$$$$$$
    * Though the .Mac and iWork are just optional products, Apple still made money through them*

    Quicktime Pro = $$

Airport Extreme Base Station = $$

In a nutshell, Apple is a hardware/software/music/accessories company.

    Done!!

  85. Colin

    @Karthik Kastury
I can’t agree more. I believe that Apple Inc. is not a company that sells OS X to the masses. It designs and produces it’s own type of computer and should have the right to retain it’s operating system within this circle.

Apple is a very different company compared to Microsoft which produces operating systems for other computer companies to install in their own machines.

Many still do strike up the common topic of Apple competing with Microsoft even when they are totally different types of companies–alike comparing an apple with an orange. But anyhow, I’m honestly against OS X (PC). It’s like an oxymoron.

But anyway, I respect the speed of the hackers in churning out this crack. What is done is done (:

It’s sad to hear and see that so many of you PC users are envious of the obviously more stable, secured and superior Mac OS X but do not have the guts to admit it.

In short, Apple is for the elite, PC is for the rest full stop. So stop stooping so low as hacking a Mac OS to run on PC. Get a Mac.

  88. kirk

Part of the legendary stability and security of OS X comes from limiting the support of hardware to a very constrained set. All drivers are written by Apple, maintaining control of the security of the code.

Supporting the plethora of devices that Windows supports, creates a code, test, and management nightmare. That, along with the poorly architected OS architecture, the registry, DLLs, and the myriad of other problems in Windows, creates the mess that is Windows.

With almost every file format that a Microsoft application produces being proprietary (vs. almost every file on Apple being open standards), Windows is a far more closed environment than OS X. Hardware is a commodity - the cost comes from the total costs of managing the environment over the lifespan.

I hope that Apple NEVER comes out on generic PC hardware - if it does, my IT costs for OS X are going to be on the par with Windows, which means a 400% increase in IT budget requirements.

  89. Joe

Apple neither a hardware nor a software company. Its both: they make complete solutions for the needs and creativity of their customers. They design the hardware, they write the OS and they also make quite a few applications that fulfills most computing needs. Some cone with every mac, like iLife, while others are cheap office alternatives like iWork or proffesional apps like Final Cut Pro.

Saying apple is a hardware company and not a software one is overly simplistic. In short, Apple uses the hardware profit in order to be creative in their research+development division.

  90. Chris

The reason Microsoft makes money is this: Ninety percent of your “average” computer user will walk into a Big Box store, pick the medium-priced, pretty Black/Blue/Grey/Neon-green-with-crazy-tubes-of-color-and-100-fans box that says it will “Play DVDS, Share photos with friends and family, burn said photos to disk. Plus, you can listen to music!” and never ever ever think of the alternative. Most people who just listen to Music, browse the web, share photos, will never ever get a bad MS experience if they have a good AV and Spyware/Adware blocks, which COME with PCs nowadays, anyhow.

Macs are generally for a dedicated user. Are they good at all those things that PCs can do? Absolutely. Sometimes better. Hell, mostly better. But for some people, they are also proibitively expensive. I can’t afford one. I sure as hell want one. But I can go to Dell right now, pick up a $1000 dollar computer with pretty impressive specs, and walk out the door satisfied. Okay, yeah, there’s the Mini Mac. But, still, over a grand with a nice display and peripherals. Even AT a grand, the Dell still has a leg up.

Apple makes more money because they sell EXCLUSIVE, EXPENSIVE products. Plus, who really buys any other DAP? The iPod owns that particular scene. There IS no competition. The SHUFFLE sells a crapton of units, and it’s a very un-user friendly product. I have absolutely NO NEED for an iPod Touch. At all. I have well over 80 gigs of music, and probably 10 times that in movies. 16 gigs ain’t gonna cut it. But I still want one. Oh so badly.

Don’t really know my argument. I do know that MS put out a killer gaming system. Maybe the most fully realized gaming experience, ever. Can’t fault them for that…

  91. brutusbanane

    @KC

    >But the margins on hardware are crap to begin with, especially compared to the margins on software, and the sales of OS X for beige boxes would more than make up for lost hardware sales.

not for apple - they usually sell their hardware for twice the price they buy it for from the manufacturers like Quanta etc. Double the win by just adding “some special software” that turns beige box into a mac - the point is the synergetic combination of hard- and software. And that’s why Apple will never ever release an OS X for the crowds. They already did that in the past and they learned: licensing MacOS to thirds is just a crappy idea.

  92. therealmac

God, what a bunch of loosers. You sit for hours in front of your peecee and bitch about Apple not meeting your pathetic little desire to load their os on your mscrap junk. Get up off your fat backsides, put something on besides underwear, (you might want to actually bathe and brush your teeth) and go discover that thing called the sun. Of course, most of you won’t because of a a sick adiction to your winblows emachine.

Now, how did that make you feel? Sure, for most of you it isn’t true. But remember that the nonsense that a few of you self described geeks are spewing about Apple and Apple computer users isn’t true either. Grow up and try to actually join the rest of the world in something productive for society.

  94. To all those who hate Mac OSX so much, why did you waste your time reading this. I have a few friends who just tried this and i doesn’t work. Now they are trying to save up and buy real Macs to replace their “P”iece of “C”raps. Just buy a Mac, why imitate?

  95. david

Why won’t Apple sell OS X to 3rd party vendors or directly to PC owners? Many argue that it is because Apple makes its money from hardware but that’s not it at all. Microsoft has proven that the real money is in software. So why does Apple continue to refuse? Simple, they learned something else from Microsoft.

The PC world is an anarchy. Anyone can make a motherboard, a video card, a nic, a hard drive interface or a power supply. As long as the device meets the uniform standards it should work. But it isn’t quite as simple as all that. Microsoft engineers are forced to keep a huge lab of PCs so that they can endlessly test Windows against the myriad of combinations that are possible in the PC world. A sad truth little known, Windows has lines and lines of code that get run only in the presence of specific devices so that Windows won’t crash when a poorly specced but popular device is installed. Or when two otherwise ok devices are installed in the same computer.

Apple avoids this by controlling the design process. While PC fanboys and cheapskates complain that Apple is thwarting their desires, Apple’s supposedly closed and proprietary system allows Mac owners a far better user experience - hardware and software. And that is why we Mac fanboys are willing to pay a premium. Because we know the value of things, not just the price.

    To McAllister:

Here is a hint… before calling people “dumbasses” you may want to ensure that you aren’t a dumb ass yourself.

The share price for a given stock is not what determines which company is “worth more.” Microsoft’s share price is lower than Apple’s, but Apple has less shares outstanding.

It is called market capitalization. I’m sure you can read about it on Wikipedia.

Just so you know, Microsoft’s market cap is currently 329.34B (according to Google Finance) while Apple’s market cap is at 161.12B. Looks like Microsoft is twice as good as Apple right?

Unfortunantly there is more than just market cap to think about when analyzing the financial situation of companies, and things are not so simple.

  105. i dont think ppl are going to install mac on their PCs for its “ease of use” or some horse shit thing you can EASILY do with it

  106. ZACK WITH QUESTIONS

Is there any way that I could exploit my having two hard drives, for instance by putting XP on one and Leopard on the other…is that possible? Or is the current standing that only either Windows OR Leopard can be installed, not both?

  107. A.

Ive spent 9 years working as a PC/Network tech and then later as a .NET programmer. I quit the field about 3 years ago and have been learning audio engineering. I resisted the switch to a mac because I thought they were so much more expensive and then I would have to buy a proTools rig, etc etc. Why spend all that money when I could do it with other software on a PC?

I found that a PC (and the software for it) just couldnt cut it. I thought it was the software and tried ProTools for PC. Couldnt get it to run right or record anything reliably.

I saved some money and I just made the switch and bought a Mac Pro about a month ago.

Ive never been happier. Runs stable, secure, doesnt crash, and doesnt bother me. PT runs beautifully. It does what I tell it to without 3 confirm & warning dialogs. Money well spent.

So i wondered if it’s really more expensive. I spent about 3800 on my mac pro setup. A similarly spec’d rig (dual 2.66, 2 GB ram, 250GB system drive 500GB storage, 23 HD display) is nearly $500 more through Dell.

    screw dlls & the registry.

  108. To say that Apple is a Hardware company, and not a software company, is pure ignorance. Apple is succesfull because they believe in building turnkey system with tight integration between hardware and software. Apple spends an equal amount of their mindhsare on their software as they do on their hardware. They are inseparable.

It would be more accurate to say that Apple is a company focussed on what the consumer wants/needs.

  109. sheesh

    “URS
What a lot of shitti comments. Apple OS X ist based on Unix. No way for a PC Version.
By the way: Apple is a software company. It is all about the software!”

you fucking idiot: unlike microsoft, who is a software company, apple is a hardware company.

  110. Brennan

You can expect that Apple will make attempts to prevent these kinds of hacks for the simple reason that Apple is a HARDWARE company, not a software company. All of Apple’s software exists for the sole reason of selling hardware. That includes the pro apps like FinalCut, Shake, Motion and Logic, even though they are relatively expensive in their own right.

Very few people (whether they be Apple or Microsoft fanboys) understand this, but it’s a simple fact which explains a lot of Apple’s ’strange’ behavior in the software market: They’re not in the software market! They have a long history of abandoning software suddenly and without explanation. (Hypercard anyone?)

Every time Apple has tried to make a serious go of it in the software market, they screwed up.

So why would Apple want to sell OSX for generic PCs? It’s just not their market. Apple’s clone license policy in the mid 1990s nearly scuppered the company. Steve Jobs tried opening up the hardware monopoly (and failed miserably) with NeXT, he’s not going to make the same mistake again with OSX.

Even Safari and iTunes for Windows exist primarily to sell iPods. Microsoft is NOT in head-to-head competition with Apple except with the Zune.

Microsoft is in fact attempting a similar model with Zune and XBox. It’s working well with the XBox…

  111. lucidmark

c’mon guys, the reason there is no pc for the mac…..remember when they tried clones with the macintosh? didnt work. first thing jobs did was go back to basics. remember, apple is mainly in the hardware business. the software is dandy and extensive. however, if they make leopard work on a pc, its a whole can of whoop ass trying to keep up with the slough of hardware manufacturers that make crappy gear. they would be consumed alive trying to support it. their hardware is closed. so it works. period.

  112. Zach

You know why people don’t buy Apples? PRICE.

You can’t get a Macbook for less than $1100. People talk about crap PCs, but who spends that much for a PC notebook? I sure as hell don’t, my HP book cost me $900 and that was high-end, and the thing is dynamite so far despite my running Vista.

A more than adequate Acer notebook costs about $500. Maybe if Apple could figure out how to enter the same price range as PC’s they’d get a little more love.

  113. Dana

There are two reasons why Apple won’t put out a PC version of Leopard: 1.) the issue of quality control; 2.) if they did, Microsoft would immediately pull the plug on Office for the Mac, and that would kill the Mac’s viability in the corporate, governmental, and educational markets (just at the time when Apple’s market share is beginning to expand). iLife, Apple’s office suite, may be satisfactory for individual users, but it’s light years away from Office. There’s also the problem that OSX may lack a wide range of drivers for cards and peripherals which PC users take for granted. Then too, at the moment Apple has a great public image, but if people started running OSX on PC’s and things didn’t work out well, they’d blame Apple, and Apple simply doesn’t need the grief.

  114. bedo

is it possible to install on vmware?

I’d love to test this out, but it seems like it requires a touch too much end-user fiddling that I’m not comfortable with just yet.

As soon as a fully-patched DVD lands online, I’ll be all over this bad boy.

  117. Speaker to Wolves

Three “easy” steps? Funny, I count 18 and easy doesn’t seemt to be the correct adjective.

Anyone who thinks it’s easy to run an app off a thumbdrive that MUST be named correctly is missing the whole point behind the philosophy of the Mac. Namely, that using a computer doesn’t have to be complicated if the engineers are doing their jobs right. So, if you think 18 steps are “easy” why are you bothering with Mac OS X? Upgrade to an OS that suits your expectations: Vista.

But if you’d like to use a computer that doesn’t fight you at every turn, get a Mac. That’s right, a Mac. Why? Because a computer is more than an OS and Macs are made by engineers who do their job well.

Someone got OSX Leopard running on a PC, aren’t you impressed? I am. They’re not being rebellious, they are just playing and tinkering. Some people like to tinker with stuff, it can be fun.

But no need to get all religious about it, and tell people your arrogant narrow/naive mindset of what you think people should be doing.

Smile for once. Go get yourself a latte. Or a cappuccino with a caramel shot, you’ll love it. Have a nice day please.

  125. bob

does this hack allow you to dual boot vista and leopard?

  126. David

Apple can’t afford to sell OS X against Windows.

It’s really easy to prove it for yourself. Look at AAPL financial statements. See how much they make on hardware. Note that it’s around 30% and that most of their sales are in the $1000 - 1500 range with some significant numbers above $2000. On the base model MacBook Pro they make $600.

Now look at what HP pays MS for a copy of Windows. It’s something like $50. Notice that 50 goes into 600 twelve times. That means that for Apple to simply break even on the loss of MacBook Pro revenue they’d have to sell 12 times as many copies of OS X. Given that they already have close to 20% of the market for >$2000 laptops, they’d not only have to put OS X on every single one sold by every manufacturer, they’d also have to grow the market to double its present size.

Having to support so many hardware configurations would easily triple the cost of making OS X, thus forcing roughly another doubling of sales to make up for it. Of course they’d have to implement some drastic DRM to slow down piracy which would further drive up costs and force even more sales. After all that consider what Microsoft would do in retaliation.

So in exchange for the current MacBook Pro sales Apple might need to sell 50-100 times as many copies of OS X into the current high end laptop market just to break even. What part of impossible don’t you understand?

  127. Mac Pro

I’m tired of hearing people that Mac OS X is just like crap and “Hey, why did you throw that amount of money for a Mac ?” Now all these people buy a PC every year, and for sure THEY spend much more money on computers that never work than I do. I’m a big fan of Mac and I really don’t want that people use illegal copies of Mac OS on PC’s. You want Mac OS, Buy a Mac. If you don’t, just stay with windows. I really don’t want too much people to have Mac OS because later its security will be compromised, just like windows was/is/will be !

  138. Karoliina

This is pretty interesting allthough, I do have a MacBook and I love it. I have Tiger and have ordered Leopard (which is coming this week maybe).

How do you find it working with different hardware setups, especially with different graphics cards than those shipped with current Mac-models? What I have read, it seems that you can’t put e.g. GeForce 8800GTX to a Mac Pro on the place of the lame GeForce 7300GT because Tiger does not support the 8800GTX (if you have Ubuntu installed on the same Mac, you can use the GF8800GTX on Ubuntu, but MacOSX don’t boot until you change the lame graphics card back).

Therefore the question is that does the Leopard support better cards than those sucking default card on Mac Pros? One of the reasons why I have only a Mac laptop is that it makes no sense to buy a lower spec (supposed to be more capable) Mac than our living room PC (which has GeForce 8800GTX 768 MB) which is running Ubuntu just, to be able to run OSX. If the Leopard works with this card, then this gets a lot more interesting (of course the PC is not that stylish and fun as Mac, but anyhow, I could then maybe give a try for this hack just for fun, at least I could then verify if I could get someday a Mac Pro with a proper graphics card on it or is the driver support as bad in Leopard as it is on Tiger).

  139. Clearer

    1) PC != x86
    2) PC != Windows

The “PC” platform is very much so supported by the Mac OS X operating system, in all of the senses that it has been proposed to me.

First of all a PC is just a computer which is not a mainframe (which is really an outdated concept). Second of all that means that any processor architecture can be a PC — this include PPC, Motorola, ARM and x86.

This also means that you don’t need Windows, or any other operating system, to claim to have a PC. In fact, if you have any computer that’s not a mainframe, you can say you have a PC.

Mac OS X runs on x86 — in fact I doubt (I don’t know) that you can get 10.5 for anything but x86.

  140. Crayfish

So, besides the comments about how everything is better and worse than everything else, has anyone actually tried this and are willing to share their experiences? Do any of the same programs work, like Office, or will those have to be installed all over again? What about the sound issue?

  141. Jack

    Did anyone install it already?

  142. David

To the genious who says apple is worth 4 times that of microsoft because of their share price. When you grow up and get older, you may learn at some time that share price is not the value of a company. What matters is the actual market cap. The way this is figured out is by multiplying the share price by the number of actual share. If microsoft wanted a higher share price, all they’d have to do is a reverse split of shares. Look again, microsoft’s market cap is more than double apples, meaning they’re “worth” more than double apple.

    Hi!

In step 1 it said I need to format a usb driver to FAT32 and name it Patcher, I guess PATCHER and patcher won’t work, it must b Patcher right?

But I got a problem, no matter how I tried to rename it, format it again and name it Patcher, it helps me to rename it to PATCHER! all CAPS! why is that? Could somebody please help me out?

    Thanks

Why put OSX in a PC?

Isn’t that like buying a Corolla just so you could put a Porsche engine in it?

Wouldn’t it be smarter just to buy a Porsche?

many people like me will buy a copy of leopard and then use the hack or a torrent version. so we will actually own a license to use the osx. apple is just stupid about releasing the osx to the public — hardware issues aside. apple needs to figure out a model to be as profitable w/o relying on sales of overpriced computer hardware. if apple would sell osx to the public, w/in 6 mos, most people would be running dual or multi boot pc’s w/at least osx and some version of windows (maybe 2 versions for those of us who want to keep our xp) and maybe linux too. some people w/newer cpus would be running simultaneous boot systems. apple is just holding us back — that’s all.

    Windows people:

Stay windows people. We don’t want you. In my experience most (not all) PC types are short sighted and judgmental “Mac sucks blah blah” bigots who have never even used a Mac since grade school.
Most Mac people have used both, are subjected to windows every day at work and know first hand which is better.

At my work, JH (the boss man) is slowly coming around to the fact that the Macs we use just seem to work, while the PCs work only if we constantly fight off viruses and bugs and accept the fact that tech help needs to be called every three days (and we only have 5 PCs). He got Dull PCs because he was advised to by his IT brother in law. Those computers are absolute garbage, and by the time we took delivery of the last one there was an audible groan in the office when they saw the box. John gave it the username ‘POS’.
