Hack Attack : Download Vista SP1 Through Windows Update
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed to receive more such tricks and articles in the future. Alternatively you can also subscribe via email. Thanks for visiting!
If you are PC user, running Windows Vista, then you must be aware of the various multitude of problems that Vista faces. Well Microsoft plans to release the first service pack for Windows Vista sometime early next year. If you are the impatient kind, then you might want to install SP1 beta right away on your Vista PC.
Well there are two options for you to install Vista SP1, one is the legal way and the other illegal way. Illegal way involves downloading the service pack from torrents, which I am not going to tell you about here. Rather lets focus on the way Microsoft wants it beta testers to download the Service Pack .Well someone on demonoid posted a Windows Update Hack that would allow anyone running a legal Vista installation to install SP1.
Well the trick is pretty much straightforward, so grab yourself a coffee as you do this. Sure this won’t take much time.
- Download this file (SP1Beta_Hack.cmd - Right Click and Save as to Download) and run it with the Administrator Privileges. You should see a successful message displayed on screen in Command Prompt.
- Once you are done, run Windows Update and Check for updates. It should show you the KB935509 hotfix. Download it and restart your computer.
- Again Fire up Windows Update and Check for updates. This time around you should find another update called KB937287 waiting for you to download it. Once done downloading it, restart and run Windows Update again and you should find KB938371 waiting. Download it and believe me this is the last step to glory!
- Now restart the computer and fire up Windows Update for the last time. Check for updates. Windows update may not present you with SP1 at the first instance so try a few times and you will find it.
- Once you find SP1 you should find something similar to the screenshots below.
- Download the Service Pack and you will now be running a legal copy of Windows Vista SP1.
Once you are done with the installation of Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista you will a see a tiny but irritating Watermark at the bottom right corner of your Dekstop saying ‘Evaluation copy, Build 6001′. If you want to get rid of the watermark follow the instructions below :
- Download this Zip file (RemoveWatermark.zip). Extract it in any convenient location.
- Install watermark_fix.reg file
- Take ownership of user32.dll.mui file in C:\Windows\System32\en-US\
- Rename file to user32.dll.mui.bak
- copy downloaded user32.dll.mui to folder
- Reboot!
- Voila! The Watermark is now gone.

works very well indeed. showing the download as 51 mb.

@Matt : I am not sure what went wrong for you. I guess there is somekind of security check to see if your copy of Vista is genuine or not. If it is not, then I guess you need to reactivate again.

stallen
It works for me on 64-bit Vista.
I think this is the best way to make sure SP1 is installed as it was intended and with the prerequisite files KB935509, KB937287, KB938371. However, I don’t see how this method is any less (or more) illegal than downloading SP1 as a torrent. This method is just taking something that wasn’t intended for you directly from the source (micro$oft); cutting out the middle man (filesharing).
Don’t get me wrong. I did it…. but I’m just sayin’

it doesn’t work for me, i downloaded KB935509, restarted, but then it doesn’t find the other hotfixes… what’s wrong? i’m using vista ultimate german..

It works except the removal of the watermark.

Is there any OEM BIOS Emulation that works with SP1?
I don’t have any working after I updated using the method described here…
Oct 16th, 2007
Karthik Kastury
@Johnny : I am not very sure, if you have followed the instructions. Did you run the registry file before you replaced the .dll file.
Oct 16th, 2007
Karthik Kastury
@Stallen, Many congratulations. Well I do believe this is illegal, but Microsoft won’t be able to know about this, because even the actual beta testers have used the same methods to receive the SP1 Beta through Windows Update, which means you will continue to receive updates to the Service Pack as long as it is in Beta.
Oct 16th, 2007
Karthik Kastury
@Cmaus : I have no idea about an OEM BIOS emulation that works with SP1. Sorry!
Oct 16th, 2007
Karthik Kastury
@Sneps, I suggest you try a little while later. Maybe the Windows Update Servers were a little bit too busy, when you tried it last time around.
Oct 16th, 2007
johnny
For Karthik Kastury:
Yes, I have run the registry file before replacing the .dll. I repeated it later but I still have the watermark. I can live with it but I found it strange that noone else experienced that.

Worked great for me. Does anybody know if this Beta has time limitation like other beta’s?

Watermark removal doesn’t work for me, I think this is because I’m using the x64 version of Windows Vista.
Oct 17th, 2007
johnny
OK, then Vista x64 is the reason for my failure to remove the watermark.
Oct 17th, 2007
Karthik Kastury
@Johnny, Yeah i guess the x64 edition is causing all the troubles.
Oct 17th, 2007
Karthik Kastury
@lcj, I guess it will have a manual time limit. I guess it will expire as soon as the next beta is released.

I have an German version, so my user32.dll in de-DE. Can I still exchange and how
Oct 18th, 2007
Karthik Kastury
@Clarence, I am not very sure about that. I guess it should work just fine. In case it doesn’t work revert back to the original dll file. Make sure you backup before you replace the dll file.

I have done it 4 days ago… and I still miss the SP1 pack…I have got all the steps before the apparition of SP1.. and nothing has appeared
I don’t know what to do.. I have almost watched 100 times for new updates… but nothing else than the 13 languages :(……. grrrr… how can I be so unlucky in everything :/ pffff
any idea ?
Oct 19th, 2007
JB
I was able to install the first 2 updates, but the third (KB938371) has failed EVERY TIME (for a total of 5 times so far). I download and install it, but when I restart, I get the “Please Wait/Configuring Updates” screen, and then a “Shutting Down” immediately afterwards. The resulting restart launches “Startup Repair”, which even if I stop and/or cancel or let it do its thing or even startup in Safe Mode afterwards, prevents the third update from working. I restart only see that the update has failed and is downloadable again.
HELP! How to I fix this? Seems maybe BOOTMGR is messed up after the third update, which forces “Startup Repair”? I don’t know what else to do, since you can’t run Windows Update in Safe Mode.
Any ideas???

@JB: I am not sure of what might have gone wrong.. You seem to either have a Pirated copy or you messed up something somewhere..

All worked well for me up to the point of installing the watermark removal hack. For some reason after the final reboot I was unable to close any programs unless I used the task manager. Consequently, I renamed user32.dll.mui.bak to user32.dll.mui and removed the cracked user 32.dll.mui. The watermark is back but at least I dont have the problem of not being able to close programs.

@Karthik
I do not have a pirated copy — it’s OEM Vista Ultimate 32-bit that came with my Dell Inspiron XPS M1710 laptop.
And how could I have “messed up something somewhere” if all you do is apply the Reg file, update, restart, update, restart, update, restart??? I’m not a moron. Obviously there’s something Dell puts in their lappies that screws with something. OR, I disabled something. I DID use various tweak guides to tweak Vista how I like it and to be faster. And yes, that includes service tweaks/disabling. Perhaps there’s a service I needed on?
Anyone else?

@CHRIS
I think that you have Windows Update turned into automatic, I suggested to stop the service and reboot your machine, and then try again
Oct 22nd, 2007
Karthik Kastury
@JB, Sorry, but i guess the problem lies with the OEM copy of Vista. I think Dell has some kind of thing in place that is messing up with your Service Pack downloads. I’m not very sure though.. No one else seems to be having this problem..

How do I remove the watermark in 64bit Vista Ultimate?
I only have these 3 files in the directory mentioned

@DERBYSPARTY
I have tried without the automatic updates and it still the same… more than 50 times with automatic updates… and about 10 times without the automatic updates… and same thing : NO SP1 comes out

@Chris, Sad that things aren’t working for you. Maybe you should just keep trying. I Wonder why Microsoft doesn’t want you to download SP1..

Oct 25th, 2007

I can’t believe I am that unlucky
I have tried it on my vista-laptop and .. what ? NOTHING. None of the updates appears after the hack .. and I got the message that the hack is working in the shell
grrrr
Vista SP1 missing on my desktop computer… and all updates missing on my laptop … is there anything else I can try apart stopping the auto-update service ?
I begin to be disappointed about Microsoft and their LOTTO !
Oct 25th, 2007
Karthik Kastury
@Chris, sad to hear that. I would suggest you head over to file sharing networks to find Windows Vista SP1 Beta
Oct 25th, 2007
Chris
@Karthik .. no I will NEVER do that .. I don’t want to use things like that. It’s not in my philosophy. I will wait for something better .. I hope I will be able to have the SP1 one day ^^
Oct 25th, 2007
Chris
I have noticed that I can’t install any pre-SP1 patches ! It tells that it was not for my system…. but I don’t understand why… it’s a x86 as my desktop and it’s the same language… the only difference is that it is a notebook and that it runs Vista Business and not Vista Ultimate..
can someone help me
please !!!!

This hack is not working for me on my laptop.
It worked on my x64 Vista Ultimate older laptop (same model from Sony) the other day, not the knew one. Strange, because all hardware / os version is the same too.
I think MS found this hack and implemented some block maybe.

I didn’t get any successful displayed and I can’t find any update… I took a look in the *.cmd-file and notice that it will create keys in REGEDIT, can I make it by my own?
Nov 1st, 2007
Danne
I opened the Command Promt and add following strings:
reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\VistaSp1 /v Beta1 /t REG_SZ /d a2c3c14a-9586-4d37-9aaa-79fbd64069d2 /f
reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\VistaSP1 /v Beta1 /t REG_SZ /d a2c3c14a-9586-4d37-9aaa-79fbd64069d2 /f
I got succes and I find them in REGEDIT and everything looks good, but the problem is that I can’t find any neew update or any installed file with name KB935509… What should I do now then?
Nov 1st, 2007
Danne
I have tried this one but I can’t find that sort of file, I can only find language packs and other “crap” updates. Nothing important or so, Micro$oft must have made a change for the keys in for regedit.

The Legal Way doesn’t seem to work for me. I’m an admin (and ran as Admin anyway), and no dice on Windows Update. Nothing new.
Oh well, guess it’s time to torrent =]
Also, those of you who have bootlegged version of Vista, and don’t want to do deal with this retarded trial thing, or all that utterly retarded 2099/crack bullshit. Look for a program called Windows Activator by Paradox. All you have to do is double click the .exe, let it finish, restart. Vista is yours. Genuine forever. It emulates something… but I can’t remember what, I believe it emulates something that only select MS Employees get to have, and Windows thinks you’re one of them. Sorry for being vague, but I really did forget.
Anyhow, some help would be nice. But either way, I’m going to torrent if it doesn’t work out.
Thanks!

Actually, with a little bit of tinkering I think I got it to work. I went to the Microsoft website, and got this little update for the update software or something like that. And right after that, 3 new Important Updates appeared, which I can only assume are the said updates.
Hope this helps.

i tryed the update once before, and it only gave me 1 preservice pack update, then went strait to the service pack after reboot, after i intaled sp1, i rebooted and my system coudnt load, giving me an error when installing the sp1:registry\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Win…. i ended up having to RE-INSTALL WINDOWS, well now im back to where i was… and yes i want to install it…

…..now when use the registry hack (the one that was updated 2 messages up) the first update that it gives me is “KB938371″ and it dosnt say anything about the others. im a little scared to try this again, does any one know why it wouldnt load the initial ones?
im thinking it might have somthing to do with the standard updates that microsoft has put out more recently, if this has happened to anyone else please let me know how it went

I got the same thing. after the hack was applied i found KB938371, and then no more. it says windows is up to date.

I tried downloading this but it doesn’t work at all with Vista. For a start you do not get a successful message in command prompt and no updates are appearing in the windows update so I think this copy is redundant and no longer working. Before you ask my laptop came with a legal copy of windows vista from PC World.
Dec 7th, 2007
Matt
Yeah I tried this weeks ago and it worked, for a while it worked..I unistalled the service pack because I thought it was causing some issue I was having, though it wasn’t..when I tried to reinstall the service pack by downloading it again, it would just stall at 8% and then 13% , and then give some errror..and now it won’t come up at all…don’t worry, the real service pack will be out soon

Here’s info on what the pre-SP! patches do …
KB935509– This is only required on Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows Vista Ultimate editions (which have Bitlocker capabilities). This update is required prior to installing KB938371, the 2nd prerequisite package, and is required to prevent potential loss of data on Bitlocker encrypted systems during servicing.
KB938371 – This package consists of fixes for several components, including the TrustedInstaller, that increases the success rate for installing the service pack, and which enable the service pack to be successfully uninstalled. This must be installed prior to the service pack install itself to enable these fixes.
KB937287– This is an update to the “Servicing Stack” or the Windows Vista component installer technologies built into Windows Vista. This update enables the built-in installer to properly and successfully install the service pack itself.
Unfortunately on my box the first one always seems to fail !

I just followed the instructions on here and it has worked just fine for me (although installing did take a while). My copy of Vista is a legal copy that came with my laptop - I think people have problems with pirated versions of Vista.
I can definitely notice a performance improvement - seeking this was what made me follow the procedure above. I didn’t want to wait any longer for SP1 to come out.

I already posted a message but having used my system with SP1 for 24 hours I wanted to comment on what has changed or improved:
Windows now recognises that I have 1GB of RAM on my laptop - not 768MB.
The image in the Windows Version dialogue box (winver.exe) fits properly - it was stretched before.
Windows Help Center performs much better.
Outlook and Word 2007 start-up much faster.
The copying dialogue box is much faster.
Windows Live Messenger not longer has a conflict with my webcam (previously, when the webcam was enabled Windows Live Messenger would not start).
The Sidebar starts up much faster.
Windows starts up much faster.
The start-up chime no longer stutters whilst Windows is starting up.
Internet Explorer is faster - starts faster and renders pages faster.
Windows Media Center performance is much better.
Wireless Networking speed/responsiveness has much improved. Also the connection would require a repair when the system started up, but that has now stopped.
The Windows Energy screensaver operates and exits much faster.
Sorry about such a long post but I hope that readers find this useful.

I keep getting an error message when trying to install SP1 “Windows Vista SP1 cannot be installed on your computer because the language of Windows Vista you have installed is not supported or you have installed a language pack that is not supported. Windows Vista SP1 can only be installed on computers running Engligh, French, German, Japanese and Spanish versions of Windows Vista or computers running only those language packs.” I only have running and installed English on my PC, yet I cannot get SP1 to install.
