Google Street View to loose its Sight on December 27th

home_logoNow that’s a misleading title for sure. But it does make sense. Google Street view will no longer be able to show street images to you from December 27th because Google’s contract with Immersive Media (The Company that provides Street View Images) will expire on the 27th of December.

October 1, 2007 – Immersive Media Corp. announces the termination of its content license agreement with Google Inc. effective December 27, 2007.

“We’ve had our technology validated and it has been exposed to millions of people which was a key objective when we entered into this agreement,” said Myles M. McGovern, president & CEO, Immersive Media Corp. “Google will retain exclusive rights to content licensed to date for a period of time. However, the termination of this agreement enables IMC to license all of our other imagery to markets that we were previously unable to service.”

Google Street View in Action

This is bad news for Google, I am sure, because it is hard to find Image providers that are able to provide detailed imagery. I am pretty much wondering what Google would do next. I think they might want to acquire Immersive Media, rather than looking for new partners.

This comes just a few days after Google confirmed its plans to take Street View to European Countries. It was rumored that Street View would first show up in London, but Google denied that, saying that Street View will be available to view several locations in Europe. Also UK residents have spotted the Volkswagen Beetle, the car that is usually used to obtain Street View imagery by Google.

  1. Google actually has created their own fleet of Google Street View vehicles. I’m sure Google will continue to update its Google Street View coverage in the coming days. The title of this story is indeed misleading.

  2. Hey Mapper99,

Thanks for the information. I had no idea that Google was creating their own fleet of Street View Vehicles. I Thought Immersive Media was the sole provider for Street View Imagery.

It would be nice if Google came out with a press release relating to this.
