Apple Sells 2 Million Copies of Leopard in its first Week

Apple on Tuesday said that it has sold over 2 Million copies of Mac OSX Leopard in its first week since its launch worldwide on October 26th. The release of Leopard has outpaced not only Mac OSX Tiger which was best selling OS from Apple in its History, but has also outpaced Rival Windows Vista.

Sales included the ones from Apple Retail Stores, Authorised Apple Resellers, copies that came bundled with new Macs. In comparison it took nearly 6 Weeks for Tiger to reach the same milestone. If Steve Jobs has his say, then I am sure Leopard is going to be a huge hit with consumers worldwide, and I am sure Leopard is going to unleash a new generation of Mac Switchers, which potentially includes me myself!

Mac OS X version 10.5 Leopard is available through the Apple Store, at Apple’s retail stores and through Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $129 for a single user license and $199 for the five-user license Family Pack.

However, the best deals on Leopard come from online retailer Amazon.com, which does not charge sales tax and is offering an instant $20 off Leopard single license and $10 off the family pack, bringing the costs down to $109, and $189, respectively. Amazon is also offering deals on Leopard Server.

Leopard requires a minimum of 512MB of RAM and is designed to run on any Macintosh computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor.

I think what makes Leopard success is buzz marketing by its fanatics users and reviewers. Meanwhile we see most of buzz come from apple users, but for rest of the software world it is just a small explosion. We will see bigger explosion next year when company will spend IT budget to purchase new hardware/software, will Mac be included into comparison as Vista losts its grip.

That's great beginning. But I'm not sure if it can grab Windows users and gain market share for long term. I wish to see that stat for ratio of Windows/Mac user who buy Leopard.

@Urael, dailyApple sounds nice, I might use it in the future..

@Thilak, @Urael, Thanks for the heads up guys, I will try to post more stuff from the other platforms too. I know its been a little bit too much of Leopard lately..

I agree. The balance has been a bit off recently. More like DailyAPPLE.

Take this as a personal feedback, but I beileve that most Daily App readers use Windows or other versions of Mac OS X. I'd like to read more on other platforms rather than just Leopard each day.
