There are times when you might want to search for the latest news on Google but the search results aren’t usually the latest. Google’s Advanced Search gives you more power than you can possibly think and one of the best uses of the advanced search is searching for pages that have been recently indexed.

The trick here is the URL encoding which google does when you use the advance search. The parameter that specifies the date range is as_qdr(query date range). Using this parameter and the Bookmarking features of Firefox searching for the latest news will never be easier.

Here are the Steps that you need to follow to get things rolling :

  • 1. Open the Firefox Bookmarks Manager and Create A New Bookmark
  • 2. Edit its properties and fill up the details as shown in the screenshot
  • 3. Enter the following into the location bar :
    http://www.google.com/search?as_q=%s&hl=en&num=50&as_qdr=w&safe=off
  • Click Ok and exit from the Bookmarks Manager

Search Google Easily

Now that you have done everything let me explain how things work .. First of all you enter goog dailyapps into the address bar and you must see some of the pages indexed from dailyapps in the past one week. Replace dailyapps with the string that you want to search for. goog is the bookmark shortcut and the stuff that follows it will be replaced in the URL string in place of %s. Sounds simple right. Once you have done this searching Google becomes really easy.

The various parameters versions of the URL Strings that you can use are :

  • Last Month : http://www.google.com/search?as_q=%s&hl=en&num=50&as_qdr=m&safe=off
  • Last Year : http://www.google.com/search?as_q=%s&hl=en&num=50&as_qdr=y&safe=off
  • Yesterday : http://www.google.com/search?as_q=%s&hl=en&num=50&as_qdr=d&safe=off

Alternatively you can also append a number to either m, y, or d in the URL string so that d4 becomes last 4 days and m2 becomes last 2 months. So customize things to your heart and find the latest stuff on google more easily than everyone else.
