Back to College : 10 Must Have Apps
So are you going back to college. There have been a lot of back to college posts on many of the popular blogs in the blogosphere. So i thought I should do one myself. So if you are going back to college then you definitely need to be using these apps to make your college life a tad easier.
- Google Docs and Spreadsheets
- NoteCentric
- del.icio.us
- GMail
- Mozilla Firefox Campus Edition
- Meebo
- You Send It
- Google Maps
- Box.net
Rather than spend $200 on the student edition of Microsoft Office, Google Docs & Spreadsheets is free and can usually do everything you will need for school. The added benefit is that instead of having a Word doc on your computer that you need to remember to email yourself or carry around on a flash drive, Google docs are stored online. This means as long as you have an internet connection, you have your files!
This is a web based note taking application. It also offers the ability to share certain notes with friends and classmates.
Facebook is the new MySpace. It offers more protection from just anyone viewing your profile and now has third party apps. That means that if you want it to do something it currently can’t, you can just search for an app and you’re done.
Del.icio.us allows you to bookmark websites to an online account. This comes in handy when you use multiple computers or maybe you have to use one of the libraries’ computers. There is also a very handy add-on for Firefox
Rather than getting a school email address that you have to ditch once you graduate, just get a GMail account and keep it forever. Google Calendar works well with mail and you have the ability to share your calendar with friends and family. It also offers tons of storage which means you never have to delete emails
This may or may not be considered a “web app”, but it’s ability to use add-ons make it essential if you want to use some of the other applications on this list. It also comes with built in addons that are essential for a student.
Meebo gives you the ability to chat with anyone no matter what instant message client they use (eg. aim, yahoo, msn or google talk). It also allows you to create an account that will remember your information for all your accounts. This way, you can login to Google Talk, MSN your Yahoo IM accounts, all with your one Meebo account.
This site allows you to send files upto 100MB. You never know when you need to send a large file to one of your classmates. Maybe it’s your class project or maybe it’s an album to some Indie band you heard last night.
Being in a new town means it’s easy to get lost. With Google Maps you can search by address or just type the business name or type of business. This isn’t going to guarantee you will never get lost, but it’s a good start:)
The free package on Box allows you 1GB of free storage. This obviously isn’t a lot, but it’s a good way to backup those thesis papers so you always have an off-site backup in case your computer gets stolen or broken.
So this is it. I hope these apps are useful for you guys. I personally use about all of these in my college life. So if you have anything to add to this list please drop in a comment..

While I agree with most of the apps listed above, I feel one is actually missing out: a to do list. To do lists are great for keeping track of your tasks and tend to increase your productivity as well. Now everyone has got their on preferences when it comes to this kind of tool, so here's a nice overview of 25 of them:

My personal vote goes to Orchestrate, by the way.
