16 Windows Freeware that you Didn’t Know About
Windows remains largely popular today only because of the vast amount of free softwares that are available for it. There are a lot of freeware that most people are not aware of, so I thought i should share all of them with you all.
Feel free to comment if you think i have missed something great and you would like it to be added. I am not going to tell about the stuff that every kid knows like Firefox etc. but rather focus on the lesser known ones.
Here you go..
- Acrobat Reader Speedup
- Quicktime Alternative / Realplayer Alternative
- Dark Room
- Portable Apps
- MP3Gain
- EverNote
- Teracopy
- RightLoad
- Launchy
- Citrus Alarm Clock
- StrokeIt
- nLite
- Notepad++
- Eraser
- DriveImageXML
- CoreFTP
This program will dramatically decrease the time it takes for Adobe Acrobat Reader to open.
Simply put, you can install these and not have to install Quicktime and Realplayer to view movies anyone.
Dark Room is a full screen, distraction free, writing environment. Unlike standard word processors that focus on features, Dark Room is just about you and your text
This application allows you to use your USB drive to run all types of apps built for a USB drive. It also has an optional menu interface to launch them.
MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume.
With EverNote you can easily capture, store and quickly access typed and handwritten memos, webpage excerpts, emails, phone messages, addresses, passwords, brainstorms, sketches, documents and more!
Teracopy will replace the horrible Windows copy dialog with one that allows you to stop, pause, and recover copying. Lightweight and free.
It integrates FTP support into your right click menu. You can now upload a file is two clicks.
This program allows you to launch programs based on its indexed database of programs. Similar to Vista’s search and run feature, but much more powerful.
A simple program that has whatever audio program you pick start playing music at a set time. It will play any music choice, has a fade in feature, lets you choose day of the weeks and times. Cheap way to replace that alarm clock.
This utility allows you to make mouse gestures to perform certain actions on your computer. When it recognizes the gesture it will fire off a set of commands.
nLite allows you to build custom Windows CDs. You can exclude certain features so they don’t even install in the first place. A way to make Windows how you want it on installation.
One of my favorite notepad replacement programs. Has features like syntax highlighting and tabs.
If you really need to delete a file then I would recommend this. It will remove a file from your PC and remove all traces of it.
If you need to make a backup of XP or 2k3 or clone a drive, this utility is for you.
CoreFTP is an excellent FTP software comparable to the likes of FileZilla and SmartFTP. It is fast and light.
So that is it.. I know that was quite an exhaustive list, but again all of them are extremely useful. If you have anything to add, please drop in a comment or two.

Excellent List! I already use a few of these and will be checking out the rest. Everyone I know seems to be using launchy too, and I just have to get off my butt because I know I’ll like it. Thanks for the list, I’ll be busy this weekend.

Teracopy is the app I’ve been wanting for years.
Klite Mega Codec pack installs the Quicktime Alternative and Realtime Alternative along with just about anything you need to play any format.

Nice list…portable apps are great, carry all your favourite stuff with you.
I also love Evernote, though have used it less recently since using my iMac more. Though I’ve just installed VMware Fusion so I can have all my favourite windows apps back.

Evernote and TeraCopy are the top best on the list. For some reason I’m not that happy with Launchy.
