Who said Linux can’t look pretty? For long its been said that Linux is the most boring OS ever and is not user friendly. I’ve been a linux user for sometime and I can say that my experience with it was nothing short of marvelous. Linux offers you unlimited amount of control as to how can you customize your desktop.

Scoring around the net I found some really fantastic desktops and here is what I feel are the best of what I’ve seen. Certainly not the most exhaustive list, but they are reminiscent to the fact that Linux can look pretty good if you know how to make it look good.
Without further delay, here are my favorite Linux desktops, and I’m sure they are some of the prettiest you’ll ever see.

I think I also have a nice desktop with screenlets.
Please look at
http://techspalace.blogspot.com/2008/04/screenlets-mac-or-vista-widget-for.html
I would be nice if you could give use some more information, for instance the name of the desktop, distribution, user, etc. So we can find our way back and make a similar one on our own…?
@Eddie, I’d have loved to, but I have found these screenshots on Flickr, with no roots back to its origin, which makes it nearly impossible to get some more information..
Just this morning i turned my Linux box (KDE3.something) into a Hackintosh. If i don`t like Leopard that much i will instantly remedy
the situation with KDE 4.1
#7 is a Mac OSX?
@Steve, don’t think so. Compiz fusion or something like that.
@Eddie, It’d be a nice idea to have all the links related to these guys, but as Karthik said, it’s nearly impossible. Although, you can find some really nice linux screenshots at deviantart.
Very nice post indeed. Maybe, when you try to create another one, you might search through the customization section. In there, guys usually link their themes and window managers.
I would be interested in the links from 4,5,6,7,13 (where 13 is alreaddy been answered…lucky number 13…?).
If I’m reading the numbers right, #6 would be my favorite, simply because they have Songbird installed
In all honesty though, that’s a nice looking desktop.
hey i would like to know more about this linux OS and i would like to know which one i should download if i could get a link or something that would help me out a lot thanks
Great list. Thanks Kartik – loved each one.
Some of those are really nice. I’m building my first Linux Machine right now. I love this Post! Great Job!
Hi there!
You have selected some beautiful pieces here
…I wonder: is it a good thing or does this mean a lot of users with wonderful desktops are hiding their creatures? The saddest part is that neither you nor the author of the other top-list have been able to retrieve instructions or addition infos about these desktops… #10 looks wonderful for a child and I’d love to put that on the eeepc of my little sister…
Any chance you publish at least the name/credits of the Flickr users you’ve taken the pictures from?
Thank you
#7 is either Linux Tiger or DreamLinux. Both of which I have been really into lately. Actually any and ALL distros that look like OSX, those 2 are the best by default
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=906733 has some good screenshots… They have a screenshot thread each month. Some of the best ones include enlightenment, openbox, IceWM and xfce4 (in my opinion). I haven’t tried enlightenment yet, but a lot of people like it.
Heh, my KDE 4 desktop looks better than most of these here.
@KSIIMSON: So lets see it then…
Does anyone know what the QuickSilver like launcher in #2 is?
I don’t know why a lot of this desktops try to emulate mac. For me, the most impresive desktop was #10, it’s something you don’t see everyday, most of the rest are pure mac copies with the dock, the HDs at the left of the screen, the upper toolbar with the apple icon, customize menus, etc…
Yeah,i think they are very good.but i believe that the linux OS could be more beautiful.
Hey, been recycling curbside donations of Macs, x86 systems, to school kids, friends, strangers, since 1997, with GNU/Linux Distros and the *BSDs that share Gnome, KDE, and lots of other windows managers.
Huge user choices are what makes GNU/Linux and the *BSDs so much better than what Microsoft or Macintosh sell!
Check out kde-look.org or gnome-look.org
Hey, what’s the name of #2?
SO BEAUTIFUL

Im impressed, I have to say. Actually not often do I encounter a weblog thats both educative and entertaining, and let me inform you, you may have hit the nail on the head. Your thought is excellent; the difficulty is one thing that not enough persons are speaking intelligently about. Im very completely happy that I stumbled across this in my seek for something referring to this.
cool desktops,,
i like no 10 better,, how to make it ?
